Don't be so glib about this.  World War III (without nukes) would jump-start the Murican economy better than any other tool at the gubmint's disposal.

Wow, so that's what a government that listens to its people looks like.

Well at least it means they don't have our back when we go in solo. Merica.

Wish they had showed that much spine with Iraq.

The gulf war didn't.

The Afghanistan war didn't.

The Iraq war didn't.

Fourth time's a charm, right?

At some point we need to figure out if Obama really is this shiatty of a president, or if he just has no power to do any better.

Plenty of land and jobs available, eh?

As I pointed out in the Politics tab version of this story, Canada has also stated they're not going to use military force (but are totally cool if the US wastes its time/money/lives there).

Government listening to and respecting the wishes of the people?  That's one funny 'democracy' you Brits got there!

That's because we didn't have much attrition.

Launching any kind of unilateral attack on Syria is a very, very bad idea. Don't do it, Obama.

Good for them. Given how Obama ditched the UK to form a closer alliance with France it is not too surprising.

Obama Praises France as America's 'Greatest Ally,' Slighting Great Britain
At least Bush was able to form a coalition of the willing. Obama can even do that. Maybe he should refrain form randomly drawing red lines.

bbfreak: Wow, so that's what a government that listens to its people looks like.

I was explaining that to someone today.  The UK government was all gung ho about the idea of a Syrian war, but the people were not.  They listened to their people. The fearmongers Obama, McCain and the other bought and sold politicians listen to the bankers.

Those wars needed more war.  It's not really a war if the guys on the other side don't fight back beyond local engagements.  We need a BIG war.

Don't count the chickens just yet. It was a non-binding preliminary vote on the theory of possibly participating, likely done for domestic consumption. When the rubber hits the road, and the "Special Relationship" card is played, they will be there in one capacity or another.

Here's the foreign policy problem: both sides are widely known to be complete assholes.  The Syrian government is oppressive and doesn't really do much for anyone other than its cronies.  The resistance is made up of terrorists, either future or current.

So, when nerve gas is used, the question isn't whether or not we're helping one side or the other.  It's whether or not we are so upset that the two assholes are hurting each other in violation of human decency that we want to intervene.  That's a tough sell.

Guuduum pussies!!! just like the freking Chinese and Russians! Well our defence budget is still many times more than everyone elses.. it was never about real tactical help anyway but just political showmanship.
I mean seriously like an extra one or two tomahawks is really going to make that much of a difference when you already launched many hundreds.

Man, when England backs out of a needless war, it really shows you how far to the left this country has moved.  I don't even understand this, Taxbongo.  What do you have to gain from becoming the worst president ever?  Why, Taxbongo?  WHY???

England had a front row seat to what the US did in Iraq, so who could blame them for backing out of it? The US Congress needs to vote on this, and they need to vote it down. Obama thinks he's the sheriff in "Blazing Saddles". It's time he found out that he isn't.

Is anyone here actually FOR bombing Syria? I haven't read one comment or talked to one normal person who is for this.

9/11 and subsequently the war in Iraq gave GB the chance to show they don't tolerate Muslim extremists while avoiding having to deal with their own domestic problems regarding immigration and insular Islamic communities.  Probably worth the ~180 British soldier casualties in the state's eyes.

You don't "send messages" with bombs. You blow the shiat out of your enemy until there's nothing left of them. When you try to "send a message" they reply in kind by flying planes into buildings.

Go all in or don't go at all

I'm too poor to do it, but man what I would give to get the hell out of America.

UK no longer has that sniveling sycophant, Tony Blair at the helm. That's why.

I have relatives in UK that were truly ashamed of how Blair fawned over Bush.
