Doh! Orange producers! In state Orange producers.

maybe if bees spent more time making more bees instead of making honey, this wouldn't be a problem.

why do we have to supply the solution to nature's faults?

2013-08-29 07:49:59 PM
The maximum fine is $10k they get nailed for $1500 because it wasn't willful.  So the 4th generation orange grower doesn't know when his crop flowers (or that he's called the beekeeper to make sure the bees are there) OKAY THEN. Nothing to see here, move along.

2013-08-29 07:53:10 PM
$1500 is nothing...

If the beekeepers want to send a message, they're going to need to wipe out some of the growers crop.

pretty easy.  Stop sending bees.

Want to really fark up the ecosystem?
Import these guys:

A few dozen queens and drones spread around the area should do it.  Let em breed a few years.  Kiss the non human secured bees goodbye.

The absence of bees should do a pretty good job of that.

Terrible.

On the other hand, if we have to resort to pollination by hand, it could help with the unemployment rate. I just hope it's not a minimum wage job where you have to provide your own uniform.

Great.  I can see the seeds of the Republican talking points against understanding and fighting the threat to pollinating bees forming in this thread already.

Yes, we are, but those aren't the reasons. They're relatively minor compared to the biggie.

It would be a major threadjack to go into more detail, and I really shouldn't anyway in a thread where people who have children might read it.

If beekeepers banded together and refused to rent their bees to these Orchards or any around it then they might change their mind.

and by might I mean would either do so or go out of bussiness.

I meant what I said. It would be outright dangerous to post this or even link to it in a forum frequented by anyone who has children. Not worried about children themselves seeing it. I'm worried about the parents, and what they might do if this became more well-known. I really shouldn't've said anything.

If you really want to know (and I warn you, this knowledge is a horrific burden in and of itself), my Email address is my handle with a period replacing the space, at GMail. But don't ask me about it if you have children. Seriously.

Again: I really shouldn't've said anything. I just felt like I had to vent, albeit obliquely. I apologize.

What about all the suburban homeowners busily eradicating wild hives in their neighborhoods because their kids might be allergic or because it's just too annoying to have bees all over the place? We gonna get on them too, or is it merely convenient to corporate-bash because it makes us feel good?

Because that's like comparing a random shooting in Houston, TX to genocide.

I dunno where you live, but around here, beekeepers will come collect the stray hives and move them.

When you can take out a million bees in a single 'eradication' of a wild hive in the suburbs to keep poor Timmy safe from his allergy he probably doesn't actually have, we'll get back to you.

A friend of mine is allergic to bees (and therefore, terrified of them)-- but yet she wants to grown an amazing garden of flowers and fruit/vegetables. She does understand that she needs bees to get that garden, but... she just figures having a greenhouse in Texas will fix all that. Because if there's anything plants love, it's greenhouse temps in excess of 150 degrees in the sun.

/Bless her heart

Yeah? And which has killed more people over the past, say, 25 years; ethnic cleansing or random gun violence?

Just a thought. I live in the suburbs, and while the elimination of traveling hives by pesticide has done little or nothing to cause bee decline around here, we are amazingly low on wild hives. The bee eradicators down here are really good at removing hives; not so good at putting them anywhere nearby. So while agribusinesses and their pesticide spraying are killing large numbers of bees and that's bad, let's not ignore the steady attrition by suburbanites. Move a hive and don't put it back, and the bees are just as gone.

Time to boycott oranges for a while?

\I don't love honeybees that much, but it appears that orange growers need to be taught a lesson.

\\Insects like bees are important.  No bees, things don't get fertilized and we don't have a shiatload of food we are used to.  And not just oranges.

2013-08-30 12:04:41 AM
So what are they trying to kill, and are there any indigenous insects that prey upon these targets?  And if viable targets exist, why in the fark won't insecticide companies (or competitors) invest in them, since growing insects has to be cheaper than producing chemicals?

That's OK, because according to the Conservative super scientific genius Rush Limbug, the only animal we need on the planet are cows, because they give us steak.  Or, perhaps Christians can pray that the bees will be saved, because ALWAYS works.  Unless they come up with a creative excuse why it doesn't.

Notice how right wingnut Christians are all for guns to protect them from bad guys, but never use prayer for that protection.  I guess God is only capable of a few things and guns are far more powerful.
