In general, hunters are a special kind of asshole.

My father was hiking in the mountains along the KY-VA border a couple years ago, and he saw a wolf.

I thought it seemed unlikely, but I know that Dad knows the difference in a wolf and a coyote, and if he said he saw a wolf, then he saw one.

Hey, Subby.  It's Kentucky.  I don't have to take a guess.

2013-08-29 03:39:06 PM
The wolf was over 150 years old and shot by a random hunter!?

Yep.  That is sad.

Really?  Tell me how I'm special.  And an asshole.

The guy mistook it for a coyote, which he was apparently hunting at the time (and licensed to do).

Because I believe that ignorance is bliss I am not going to click the link.  Instead I am going to assume the person took in the moment, watching a magnificent creature in it's natural environment and will remember it forever.

This is why I don't believe Sasquatches exist. Surely, some feckless bullet-head redneck would have blown one away by now if they were out there.

I can see where you could make the mistake from a distance.

Coyote:

Gray wolf:

They aren't even prosecuting the guy because there was no reasonable expectation that a gray wolf would even be in Kentucky since they haven't been sighted there in over a century.

It's sad, but it really does sound like an honest accident.

Yep, because he's got a picture of himself holding it.  Biggest damn coyote you ever saw.

"I thought it was a coyote" shouldn't be a defence. If he can't tell the farking difference then he shouldn't be hunting.

How did it even get there when the nearest population is around 500 miles away?

I am torn.

I see both statements and agree with both.

However, I am gonna lean with he should be able to identify his target 100% before firing. Firearms 101.

"I thought the speed limit was..." never holds up, why is this person getting a pass?    He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law as a warning to others.

If the guy can't distinguish what he's hunting from something he's not hunting, he doesn't need to be hunting.  Furthermore, if he wasn't sure what he was about to shoot was really what he wanted to shoot, he should not have taken the shot.  If there is any doubt, don't take the shot.  There is no excuse for mistakes, this idiot needs to lose his hunting license.

Good! I hope he shot it twice. Purposely reintroducing wolves has got to be the stupidest game management plan since we killed off all those buffalo.

Well, I like to think that you, as a fellow Farker, would have the decency to look abashed in a photo with the wolf, and not smugly happy like the prick in the article photo.

Perhaps you might even forego the photo entirely, out of a surfeit of shame. I like to think so, anyway.

I for one, completely understand the licensed killing of things you're not going to eat and have no way to defend themselves while they're out for a stroll in the area they live that you left the area you live to go visit uninvited and unannounced.  It makes perfect sense for an advanced, civilized society to engage in such worthwhile endeavor.

You'd rather see deer starving?  Starvation is a long cold death.

Yes, the day I saw a big dog. For you, it was a memorable commune with the ineffable splendor of Gaia, for me it was Tuesday.

I like wolves, I like hunting, and I dislike "men" who have a problem with hunting (women get a pass on this, but just barely) and throw hissy fits about the activity.

So I don't know what to say here

Normally I am 100% in this camp.  I hunter should be 100% sure of what he is shooting.  However, in this case I'm betting he was 100% sure only to find out afterward that it the animal he thought it was.  Both look a lot alike and there was absolutely no reason for him to think that it was anything other than a coyote.

I have no problem with hunting do it myself from time to time, I always know what I'm shooting at, if I'm not sure I don't take the shot. It could also have been someone's dog. This is how other hunters get shot when they are mistaken for game.

Tell us all how manly it makes you to kill animals from 100ft away when you have a fridge packed with food at home. I can tell you want to.

Ok, then you're an asshole! Licensed for years grew up hunting just about everything and you can't mistake a wolf for a coyote unless you are an idot or an asshole.

Hilarious, but repetitive Sunday morning cartoons.

2013-08-29 04:41:34 PM
Wolves and coyotes look a lot alike and there was no reasonable expectation that there would be a wolf within several hundred miles of his location. If you saw a wolf sitting on your neighbor's lawn tomorrow would you think "wolf" or "wow that's a scary looking dog". Like in this story the odds of it actually being a wolf are pretty close to zero.

For all of you who think you can tell them apart here's a helpful guide from the government of Wisconsin.

Or he had never actually seen a coyote.

You would think a hunter would know how to tell the difference.  They're in their element, unlike reporters who don't know the difference between an AK-47 and Mini-14

Hang on the fence with the catfish heads and rattlesnake hides.
