Wow, I'm shocked.  Holder is a committed, career drug warrior.

/now that the DOJ has folded when it comes to state marijuana laws, can we work on the rest of the drug war?

It's a start...

Unfortunately, it still leaves the door open for overly zealous federal prosecutors, not to mention that the next Administration could reverse this.

In some ways, it makes things worse off since it's likely to decrease the pressure to reclassify marijuana at the federal level, meaning that banks still won't want to lend money to MJ related businesses. It also doesn't address the concerns that these businesses have about their status with the IRS.

Right now, in Yazoo City Prison in Mississippi, Marc Emery is sitting in his cell, serving a 5 year sentence for crimes he did not commit in the United States.

When this news reaches his ears I think he will feel vindication, because he knows he's right.

A Justice Department official said that Holder told the governors in a joint phone call early Thursday afternoon that the department would take a "trust but verify approach" to the state laws.

Yeah man, I'll bet it was.

How do you figure?  He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to manufacture marijuana, and Holder here explicitly stated that they would still prosecute manufacture and distribution of marijuana; the state laws only govern possession.

Emery wasn't right about anything.  He bragged about making millions of dollars selling marijuana seeds, and he knowingly mailed much of it to US addresses.

Whether or not marijuana  should be legal has nothing to do with whether Emery broke the law.

This is the beginning of the end of the War on Weed.  Once other progressive or libertarian states see that the sky isn't falling in Washington and Colorado, they'll legalize too, and at some point the federal government will get out of it and just leave it up to the states.  It will probably always be illegal in, say, Alabama but it's your own damn fault for living there.

The only way Marc Emery was convicted was because the Canadian government chose to extradite him to the United States where he would face charges.

What he did in Canada, from Canada, was perfectly legal.

The DOJ wanted Emery in jail because they didn't like him or his message and our spineless, Milquetoast lawyer of a Prime Minister went right along with it.

It'll be legal in PA, but you'll only be able to buy two joints at a bar or a brick of weed at a state owned Marijuana store. Those stores will only be open Monday-Friday from Noon to 9 PM. You will not be allowed to bring weed in from other states.

That's actually an interesting topic for debate.

Back in my heavy use days of marijuana, I loved to have a nice smoke and then relax with a few Pilsner tallboys.

Beer is delicious to begin with.

Beer on weed? Yum.

The Republican health care plan from the 90s

accepting Gays in the Military,

.endorsing Same Sex marriage Equality,

Endorsements are cheap.  Action in the affirmative is what matters.

ending enhanced interrogation methods,

And replacing them with a vastly expanded surveillance state and an expanded drone war that has ensnared countless civilians in countries we're not at war with.

signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

I'll give him that, even though women in his administration make 87 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn.

Agreed. If you're using violence and firearms to cultivate marijuana, you probably should get a visit from someone. Like a horticulturalist, first.

OK, don't be ridiculous.  His administration has been very diligent in expanding same sex rights.

And no, the endorsement wasn't cheap.  It's easy to forget since the politics of same sex marriage have changed so dramatically in the time SINCE he endorsed it, but at the time it was still a huge political risk, and one that was taken before his reelection.  At the time, many people predicted that the black vote would stay home over it.

I was actually opposed to him coming out in favor of gay marriage, because I thought it would cost him. I was wrong, and I admit that. In the ONE YEAR since his announcement, gay rights have made huge strides.

For what it's worth, "87-cents-to-the-dollar" is simply comparing average salaries with no consideration given to job position, experience, or other variables.  The link you provided explicitly states that the figures are inconclusive:

First, the Obama White House has more equitable pay rates than the economy as a whole. And second, when you look at employees who have the same titles, only a small fraction of women are out-earned by men, a difference that might be explainable by differences in experience and longevity rather than discrimination.

I concede your point, although those many people were idiots, blacks weren't going to stay home, not with the Tea Party trying to disenfranchise them.  Didn't Obama get a higher black turnout this time around?  Particularly in "battleground" states like Ohio and Florida?

what_now: Oh god, this talking point. Yes, Obama and Biden make more money than the soup lady at the White House Mess.

And loggers, fishermen, and miners make more money than teachers and social workers.  Still doesn't stop people from trotting out the "women only make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes" line.

/and before I get jumped on, yes, I do still think there are disparities when it comes to gender and wages, just not quite on the same level as some people make it out to be

The inertia of big companies is generally more a mindset than a reality.  You have entrenched individuals who are used to doing things successfully in a specific way, and it takes a lot to get them to look at new ideas.  I agree that the actual implementation wouldn't be very difficult.
