I must be getting old. I actually remember some of those ads. Does anybody recognize that fat kid at the end of the first ad as Rudy's quiet friend on The Cosby Show?

2001-12-04 01:09:52 AM
Adventure. That was a great game. I don't know how many times I played that as a kid. I think I'll go try to find a ROM of it.

Still have my old Atari 800 (48K RAM) in a box in my closet. I last powered it on a year ago, and it worked fine! That thing was state of the art in home computing for it's time. The Apple ][ had 16 colors, the Atari 8-bits had 256 colors. The Atari also had 4-channel sound, something the Apple required a third-party sound card or some shiat like that. These commercials certainly bring back memories.

The Atari 2600/VCS were actually 8-bit machines,so the headline is somewhat inaccurate.I believe the 2600/VCS used 6502 CPU's,which were incredibly popular at the time(The Apple II,Commodore Vic-20,Commodore 64,and even Atari's own 400/800 home computers, along with numerous other systems, used them). The 2600/VCS also had 128 bytes of RAM,so it is rather amazing that programmers were able to do anything with the 2600/VCS.Just technocrap I pulled out of my head(or ass,if you prefer).
JOEDAN-I feel your pain.I bought a Jaguar used for $70,and to date,it has been used ONCE.

2001-12-04 02:32:31 AM
you know, you are right Kthulhu

2-bit color = 2^2 = 4 colors?

2001-12-04 02:59:28 AM
lmfao - Check out the Dig Dug one under "Atari Coin-Op/Arcade Promotions" Just watch from :25 - :33 seconds.

2001-12-04 03:13:55 AM
HOLY shiat!!

Deafnugly, that is one of the funniest things I have ever seen in a video game commercial.

2001-12-04 03:42:32 AM
i got the atari jaguar + the cd attachment..biggest waste of 50$ on ebay ever.

2001-12-04 04:15:26 AM
if i recall correctly, I paid $800 for a 10 megabyte drive for my Atari 1040ST

2001-12-04 05:25:18 AM
My dog ate through the power cord on my Atari, I was so bummed. Lucky for the dog, the transformer was on the wall instead of in the console.

I felt a little better when my dad got me a TI99-4/A that Christmas. I killed that one myself.

Geez... that was 17 years ago. Must... stop... aging...

2001-12-04 05:47:27 AM
Holy shiat Deafnugly, I just blew coffee everywhere. You suppose that was some subliminal message about how much fun their games were?

"Play our games! It's better than.. well, just play them and see!"

2001-12-04 05:55:32 AM
Nicoffeine: That is a sad story..Worst i ever had was a Beagledog that used to go insane on the DuckHunt game. No electrocution hazard, just beagle slobber on the tv. Animals shouldn't watch TV.
Pardon my repost of this pic, but i killed the old link, MOD, destroy at Will.

2001-12-04 06:13:37 AM
I look at the above picture and it scares me even more every time i see it. Yes, the frog is saying "Ribbet, Ribbet". So you know the audio has got to be great.... but I wonder what the point was?..? i do see a reward,a gem, and some bad guy rats, i would love to have this HI-REZ ARCADE STYLE game in my emulator software, but I fear nobody saved this one from the landfill.

2001-12-04 07:18:17 AM
My parents wouldn't buy me an Atari.. They baught me a TI994A because they wanted me to learn how to use a computer that could actually do stuff.. Damn them.

2001-12-04 07:29:44 AM
See, this is where it's at. None of this "Next-Gen" nonsense.

Oh well. I guess I had better go beat up some Best Buy clerks tonight until they get me Smash Brothers Melee.

2001-12-04 07:58:28 AM
This was my first article! Yay!

The headline, I know, is basically just WRONG. It's an inside joke - inside probably just to me. Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure had a code to play the original Pitfall (which, sadly, was better then the new one..) in it. When they revealed it in Nintendo Power, they said "Just listen to those INCREDIBLE 2-bit sounds!" or something like that. I thought that was really mean, and I always remembered it for some reason.

2001-12-04 08:09:09 AM
Wow, I find myself humming the M Network video game blues jingle every once in awhile. That commercial aired 18-19 years ago. What a blast from the past.

I still play Adventure at least once a month. Not for the challenge mind you, it's just a comfort thing. :)

Thank god for the Stella emulator.

2001-12-04 09:22:22 AM
The guy in the Dig Dug commercial isn't doing what you think he is. Lots of arcade games came in a cocktail cabinet that you could actually sit at and play. But yeah, whoever chose that camera angle should be shot. :P

2001-12-04 09:27:24 AM
Those videos are really . They bring back a lot of memories. The firs VGS I had was a Colecovision, followed by the 7800. I wish I still had that 7800. I've been getting the itch to buy another one.

2001-12-04 09:36:09 AM
Thanks for clearing that up Drwiii. I was about to write an angry letter.

2001-12-04 09:39:25 AM
Yeah, had a 7800. Convinced my brother to ask for that instead of a nintendo because we had all the old 2600 games. Boy, he sure hated me when everyone else had a nintendo and he didn't! Now he's thinking of buying an X-Box and I told him he better get a playstation2. He reminded me of the last time he followed my video gaming advice! Those pics of one on one basketball brought back some memories! Dr. J and Larry Bird!!!

2001-12-04 09:49:38 AM
How can you "see" the sound? Just wondering...

2001-12-04 10:04:03 AM
Where's Custer's Revenge?

2001-12-04 10:06:07 AM
Hey, I bought a Jaguar at FULL PRICE ($250!) and never regretted it. You just have to know which games to pick. Tempest 2000 is a must-own.

2001-12-04 10:43:15 AM
Dr. J and Larry Bird rules!

Deafnugly, I can't believe you beat me to posting about that Dig Dug guy. i thought i had a treasure to share. :(

oh, but how about this angle: it gets worse -- this guy is going nuts with the whanging action in his general crotch area just after hanging out in an arcade with a bunch of kids... creepy.

2001-12-04 12:12:13 PM
Oh I am so damn nostalgic now.

2001-12-04 12:12:55 PM
Er, about the games, not about the crotch whanging and the kids and the heyoigh....

Forget I said anything. Anything!

Augh!

*runs*

This is farking awesome.

Hgahaha. Alan Alda Atari ads. he also did ads for the Triumph TR-6. He must have needed the money.

2001-12-04 12:50:17 PM
The Space Duel and Gravitar commercials are incredibly cheesy.

Oddly enough, the "new" Atari titles for the Playstatoin and PC are just as cheesy as their early 80s ads.

2001-12-04 12:51:51 PM
i would buy any computer that Alan Alda was selling. seriously. get rid of that damn kid for the dell commercials, and get alan alda.

2001-12-04 12:58:56 PM
Thank GOD for this page! I've had that '86 atari commercial in my head for the since I was 11 for god's sake!

"the fun is back oh yes sir-ee
its the 2600 from a-tar-i"

man, no one writes jingles like that anymore!

2001-12-04 03:00:31 PM
Anyone know where I can get a good atari 2600 emulator?
If I wasnt so lazy i'd look.

2001-12-04 03:58:50 PM
Check out the Dig Dug arcade game video.

Honestly, what the hell is the creepy looking guy with the moustache doing while some woman is sitting across from him?

I hope he's playing a cocktail version of Dig Dug.

Oh dear God I hope he's playing a cocktail version of Dig Dug.

2001-12-04 04:02:54 PM
And... I'm entirely unoriginal. :)

2001-12-04 04:11:35 PM

2001-12-04 04:24:32 PM
This really switches on the Way-Back machine...Anybody remember "Space Shuttle" for the 2600? Strangely compelling...

2001-12-04 04:57:16 PM
Don't dis my Atari 2600, that thing will rock anybody's GameCube to pieces!

2001-12-04 05:01:12 PM
Check out the kid in one where the boy heads to the bathroom to "lynx up". He's a got a rat tail!
