Oh, good God! I don't judge much, however this gets worse and worse in theory

2013-08-29 08:04:14 AM
I'd buy that for a dollar!

2013-08-29 08:08:21 AM
I'm okay with this, actually.

2013-08-29 08:25:14 AM
Well, Gotham is supposed to be a once great city fallen to decay and criminal gangs.  Detroit is a natural fit.

2013-08-29 08:56:35 AM
The scary part would be if the movie was set in Metropolis, not Gotham.

Maybe they'll mix it up and have it be set in actual Detroit.  Wayne Enterprises is thinking of buying out GM or something (because all those abandoned factories are a great place to build Batgadgets).  Mild mannered reporter Clark Kent is there to cover the story.  Something goes horribly wrong and Batman and Superman just both happen to be in Detroit, which nobody finds the least bit odd.

It could be set in Metropolis.  After what Zod did and the fight that ensued, making Metropolis a hellscape, Detroit seem like the perfect stand in.

2013-08-29 09:03:28 AM
Detroit's perfect. It's a decaying city, and there'll be urban landscapes that we've pretty much never seen in films before. On top of that, the film will be pouring money into Detroit, where it's badly needed.

I fully support this.

Maybe Metropolis after Supes and Zod got done with their little dust up.

Do the stray Dogs have jobs? There you go.

2013-08-29 09:08:21 AM
There are plenty of unemployed folk in Windsor, Ontario that can be used as extras. Beer them up & have them swim across the river.

`Are you the Batman, eh?'

2013-08-29 09:08:27 AM
Supposedly the words around the camp fires here is that filming won't be limited to Detroit and surrounding areas either and that they are thinking of using several towns and places in and around the area.

EvilEgg: Well, Gotham is supposed to be a once great city fallen to decay and criminal gangs.  Detroit is a natural fit.

There's also tons of buildings that can be purchased for demolition and stunt needs as well.

2013-08-29 09:11:29 AM
$35 million worth of Michigan taxpayer money is the reason they're going to be filming there.

They expect to get 406 temporary Michigan jobs out of this.  Assuming that the jobs last one year, that's $86,000 per person for a year's worth of work.  Yeah, that's worth it.

But at least we'll get to see the Penobscot get wrecked by Superman.

2013-08-29 09:11:58 AM
The hard part will be keeping the ocelots out of craft services.

2013-08-29 09:12:10 AM
So, they're going with No Man's Land Gotham?

I actually missed out on Man of Steel in the theaters.  Waiting for streaming version.  Waiiiting is the hardest part.
But yeah, Zod is known for causing some damage.

I can get behind this.

If Gotham City is suppose to be a dying example of how all Ponzi schemes end, then Detroit is perfect.

meanmutton: But at least we'll get to see the Penobscot get wrecked by Superman.

I could care less what the entire movie contains, but if I can pay to see Superman wreck the Joe Louis Arena I would gladly pay triple for that experience.

What is the release date for this movie?

Pffft, any money they saved by filming in Detroit is going to used for security.

I seem to recall someone saying July, 2015.

Just wait until they cast a bald Sam Worthington as Lex Luthor. At least, it looks like that's the way things are going.

/honestly, Snyder, if you're trying to tank the film, at least do it like a man

SushiJoe: Oh, good God! I don't judge much, however this gets worse and worse in theory

Why? Oh, don't get me wrong, I think the Affleck thing is a joke, but Detroit works just fine. Gotham is not ever REALLY portrayed as a vibrant, pretty city, it's supposed to have crime issues, it's why Batman even HAS a job. Metropolis is nicer, but even it seems to be over-represented when they use New York. Detroit, especially in its current state, seems just fine.

CSB. I was in Pittsburg for a conference. A group of us decide to walk 10 blocks from the hotel to a brew pub. We starting entering some rough looking areas, and this guy comes running up to us and telling us that they had been filming Dark Knight Rises there that day. All I could think was, great we are walking through a place that is a good fill in for Gotham.

The beer was worth it though.

Scott Snyder writes Batman right now.  Is he involved with this film.

No, I was referring to Zack Snyder, the director of MoS, the guy responsible for Baffleck.

Is this an issue? The Dark Knight Rises was partly filmed there. It's a big city that's seen better days, so it's good for a portrayal of Gotham and hopefully the money can help that city out.

Golly! People sure are witty with their jokes about this film!

Has anyone posted a picture of Matt Damon as Robin yet? Maybe replace Burt Ward's and Adam West's heads with Damon and Affleck! Ha! Ha! That would be a hoot!

Two years of this! It's like 24 months of Internet Happy-Time!

All right, everybody, knock off the Batman jokes. You're upsetting ExcedrinHeadache.

Gotham is supposed to be a comic book analog of Chicago, but Detroit would do a nice stand-in for it. You never want to have any "signature" buildings or landmarks shown in the movies, so they avoid RenCen, Greektown, and the Joe, and voila! generic city with a waterfront.

It's certainly more convenient to shut down parts of Detroit for filming over parts of Chicago and I always feel like Chicago is slightly more "cramped" too, which probably means logistics are easier in Detroit.

Gotham is NYC, not Chicago. Well, old school NYC, not the Giuliani/Bloomberg sanitized version.

2013-08-29 10:55:40 AM

rocky_howard: Gotham is NYC,

True.

The last 3 movies were set in a more rundown version of NYC, which fits with Chicago. Detroit is another step even below THAT.

Best Batman flick used Chicago. But with Chicago's real crime problem, I bet they are afraid to film there. Even Batman avoids TerrorTown.

LesserEvil: Gotham is supposed to be a comic book analog of Chicago,

No, not at all. Gotham is NYC (or sometimes "NYC at night"). I"ve honestly never even HEARD of Gotham being Chicago. Normally people claim Metropolis is Chicago, but that's wrong too. Both are NYC analaogues.

Anyway, Gotham is... actually an existing nickname for NYC. A nickname that predates Batman/comics. It's like if they called the city "The Big Apple." Gotham is an east coast city with vast skyscraper, major italian mafia presence, and a billion landmarks that mirror NYC landmarks.

Strange, I always thought Metropolis was NYC. Gotham always fit more with Chicago (industrial city for Wayne Enterprises, Wayne Manor, etc...). From a quick bit of googling, it seems DVC has never cleared this up, though there are hints at Gotham City being in New Jersey and also suggestions it is the sister city to Metropolis, sitting across a bay from one each other.
