3 generations of punishment.  That's why some people are born, live out their short and miserable lives, and die all within the confines of a prison camp.  About as close to hell on Earth as you can get.

Eh, our theatrical productions tended to divide into a hierarchy of three camps; the drama geeks at the bottom, the set building/technical crew, and the stars/pretty people at the top.

As a member of the technical crew, I can say definitively that we had the best alcohol and drugs, and threw the best after-show parties.

They're absolutely TERRIFIED.  The entire culture is based on never-ending fear of everyone.  You couldn't even trust your own family.  That's how this anachronism continues along.  The worst part is that they are led to believe that the whole world works this way, it's just how it is.  Foreign media is forbidden, even reading a worst Korean newspaper can be punishable by death.  Foreign broadcasts are jammed.  It's an information black hole, which is why it's unlikely to change from within.

If the shiat ever hits the fan and the regime collapses, the culture shock is going to be like nothing ever seen before.  German reunification was NOTHING compared to what Korean unification would be.

Some political experts think this execution is more about the singer being his ex-girlfriend (Remember the "Excellent Horse-Like Lady" song?).  She remained a high-profile singer even after Kim Jong-Un married someone else.  It sells better in North Korea to say that they were making illicit videos and reading bibles.

"She was luckier than Kim Chol, vice minister of the army, who was executed with a mortar round in October 2012.

Kim Chol was reportedly executed for drinking and carousing during the official mourning period after Kim Jong-il's death.

On the explicit orders of Kim Jong-un to leave 'no trace of him behind, down to his hair,' according to South Korean media, Kim Chol was forced to stand on a spot that had been zeroed in for a mortar round and 'obliterated.' "

It's a brilliant way to snuff out dissent and rebellion.  !0 many people are brave enough to risk death to fight for something they believe in,  Far less people are willing to risk the lives of their children and spouses in such a fight (thus conscience doth make cowards of us all) , and even if they WERE the fact that your spouses, children etc know they will bear the consequences of your misdeeds they are much more likely to turn you in before you do something bad, meaning there is literally NO ONE you can trust when trying to put together a conspiracy

No relevant difference.  The Kim family has a literal religious mythology built around it.  Kim Jong-Il's birth was heralded by great miracles and magic.  His dad is called "Eternal Leader" because he's still in charge, ruling from the heavens.

You mean Era Alaska, from the show "Flying Wild Alaska"?  I wouldn't put "airline" in quotes.  It has something like 80 planes and services almost 100 towns and villages.  It may not be Alaska Airlines, but it's a pretty decent setup, and has fairly solid facilities.  Way bigger than the "airline" I flew for up in Fairbanks.  We had 4 planes, 6 pilots/mechanics/cargo haulers, the owner's wife and daughter were our secretaries/accountants, and we served about 25 villages and small towns, and ran researchers and oil employees out into the bush.

The cute, kinda-dumb-but-sweet miniature eskimo on that show about a mom-and-pop "airline" in Alaska?  Maybe the big-boobed broad who used to be on that stabbiness-inducing Idiots Buy Their First House show from Canda?  Ummm... the too-perky nymph from Vacation Places You'll Never Be Able To Afford maybe gets a pass for being on Bourdain's show in a gloriously self-aware and self-deprecating way?

/ someone had to try

The entire "Real Housewives" cast.

Sorry missed the "not". Please reload.

Obviously some extremely effective rhetoric being spoon fed to the masses from a very early age.

Just smile and wave....and then break out a huge sandwich and eat it like a glutton having an orgasm in full view of as many of them as possible.  MmmmMmmmm, dont you wish you had food too?

Anyone in Best Korea.

At least you'd have better hope of escaping Afghanistan. :(

I am shocked that more hasn't been done by the West to deal with the massive humanitarian crisis that is NK.

My guess is that we/the West is waiting for the Norks to do something profoundly stupid like lob a bomb at Japan, and then we can finally justify severe military action.

Best Korea is a strange, strange place.  Though I will admit, these guys were great when they did the song at the end of  Scooby Doo.

Anastacya:   chrylis: Given the mention of finding Bibles among their possessions and making the families watch the executions, it sounds like somebody decided to clean out some potential religious and/or political dissidents and make it clear to the families to toe the line.

Nah, they keep a crate of those things around to plant. Kim Il Sung dictated that three generations of a family should be purged. They keep enough "evidence" around to make sure that they can get everyone who pisses them off.

The idea that a bunch of folks made a porno tape for sale in a country as conservative and isolated as DPRK sounds real unlikely. This is the country that prosecutes you if they catch you with a bootleg copy of a South Korean soap opera.

My money is on some of these folks being Christian converts and maybe it was spreading amongst their little social circle.... South Korean missionaries are active in that area.  Or it was a political crime of sorts - plans for defection, too many critical comments made about the regime, or even being too visible.

This is just a salicious made-up crime to make them even look worse in the eyes of the masses.

Best Koreans are indoctrinated with the idea of NK 'purity' as something to be revered and protected. It's part of the isolationist mindset. Outsiders must be kept out lest they dilute our superior, pure race. To the average NK citizen, any outsider, even South Koreans, Japanese, etc. not to mention the evil US and other western nations would bring down the utopia that is Best Korea.

At the rate things are going with chronic malnutrition, each new generation is becoming a  more stunted, more withered version of the one before.

By 2075, Best Koreans will either become a race of Morlocks or extinct.

Sorry Norks. I can't see you hating me while I'm eating this delicious Whopper on this side of the border. Mmmmmmmm!

And see this? It's called "Ketchup"? Ever seen ketchup. It's made from to-ma-toes. Ever seen a  tomato?

puu.sh

But anyway, the Norks have been running a cartoon series that's been ongoing since the freaking 1960's (and you thought George R.R. Martin was glacial with his books) called "Squirrel and Hedgehog", where the brave hedgehogs, squirrels, and ducks defend their Marxist Paradise against the Imperialist army of wolves, weasels, rats, and foxes. Check it out on You Tube. There's even Rule 34 art dedicated to one of the evil female villains of the series, known outside of Norkland as "Lt. Fox Vixen".

Hyon Song-wol and Mun Kyon-jin were the victims. They were victims of an atrocity, according to the original article.

Sadly no.  Best Korea has Worst Korea trapped in a perpetual hostage crisis.  If we try to effect a coup there, they open up with all that artillery they have pointed at Seoul and suddenly 5+ million innocent people are dead.

3 generations of punishment.  That's why some people are born, live out their short and miserable lives, and die all within the confines of a prison camp.  About as close to hell on Earth as you can get.

Yep, age old propaganda technique.

No, these were people with the surname of Trotsky, born before 1917; that's what's effed up about it.

The stupid, it burns.

North Korea is NOT communist.  It doesn't even claim to be communist, they've got something they call juche instead - and it's not communism.

North Korea is a totalitarian, cult of personality absolutist monarchy - they're on the third generation at this point, it's now effectively a monarchy.

But there has never in the history of the world been an actual test of communism - all the nominally "communist" countries have been cult of personality dictatorships, which is about as far from actual communism as you can get.

Now whether pure communism could ever work is up for debate, but it's never failed, as it's never been tried.

Capitalism, on the other hand, HAS been tested and has failed miserably.  The late 1800s are a perfect example of what goes wrong when you allow business to operate without regulation - you get a few people with vast wealth, and everyone else in crushing poverty.  And if the teabaggers get their way, that's exactly where we'll end up again.
