Endive Wombat: I am shocked that more hasn't been done by the West to deal with the massive humanitarian crisis that is NK.

My guess is that we/the West is waiting for the Norks to do something profoundly stupid like lob a bomb at Japan, and then we can finally justify severe military action.

Sadly no.  Best Korea has Worst Korea trapped in a perpetual hostage crisis.  If we try to effect a coup there, they open up with all that artillery they have pointed at Seoul and suddenly 5+ million innocent people are dead.

That's communism, kiddo - every progressive's idea of 'progress'.

/it takes a lot of secret police and gulags to achieve REAL social justice

Some anti-progress people actually believe this!

WGJ: FTFA:  "They were executed with machine guns while the key members of the Unhasu Orchestra, Wangjaesan Light Band and Moranbong Band as well as the families of the victims looked on," the source said.

Who were the victims???

I just wanted to note my surprise that no one had commented on the name Moranbong Band.  Are farkers naming bands in North Korea now?

The source added that all of the families of the executed appear to have been sent to prison camps under North Korea's barbaric principle of guilt by association.

3 generations of punishment.  That's why some people are born, live out their short and miserable lives, and die all within the confines of a prison camp.  About as close to hell on Earth as you can get.

Jesus... They're harsher than the farking Klingons! They at least let you accept discommendation and you just have to GTFO and never return...

Nice.

Ha ha!  Stalin executed anyone in the USSR named "Trotsky" just in case, even though he must have known that that was a pseudonym.

In all fairness, parents who would name their child after Trotsky were probably at least sympathetic to the "wreckers" like him.

SirEattonHogg: The idea that a bunch of folks made a porno tape for sale in a country as conservative and isolated as DPRK sounds real unlikely. This is the country that prosecutes you if they catch you with a bootleg copy of a South Korean soap opera.

My money is on some of these folks being Christian converts and maybe it was spreading amongst their little social circle.... South Korean missionaries are active in that area. Or it was a political crime of sorts - plans for defection, too many critical comments made about the regime, or even being too visible.

This is just a salicious made-up crime to make them even look worse in the eyes of the masses.

Yep, age old propaganda technique.

"No, we're not executing these musicians because they're Christians or they played a song the Leader didn't like, no no.  We're executing them because they're sexual deviants who offend your very moral fiber!"

No, these were people with the surname of Trotsky, born before 1917; that's what's effed up about it.

So glad I didn't have the misfortune of being born in N Korea.

So NK parents beat their little brats if they show even the slightest hint of stepping out of line.  It makes for a very orderly society.

The stupid, it burns.

North Korea is NOT communist.  It doesn't even claim to be communist, they've got something they call juche instead - and it's not communism.

North Korea is a totalitarian, cult of personality absolutist monarchy - they're on the third generation at this point, it's now effectively a monarchy.

But there has never in the history of the world been an actual test of communism - all the nominally "communist" countries have been cult of personality dictatorships, which is about as far from actual communism as you can get.

Now whether pure communism could ever work is up for debate, but it's never failed, as it's never been tried.

Capitalism, on the other hand, HAS been tested and has failed miserably.  The late 1800s are a perfect example of what goes wrong when you allow business to operate without regulation - you get a few people with vast wealth, and everyone else in crushing poverty.  And if the teabaggers get their way, that's exactly where we'll end up again.
