Given the mention of finding Bibles among their possessions and making the families watch the executions, it sounds like somebody decided to clean out some potential religious and/or political dissidents and make it clear to the families to toe the line.

Lets not overlook this tidbit:

The source added that all of the families of the executed appear to have been sent to prison camps under North Korea's barbaric principle of guilt by association.

Born in Best Korea?  You're pretty much farked.  You would be better off in the matrix, where the steak is juicy and delicious.

I think its important to note that they were part of a drama club and filmed themselves having sex together, which just reiterates my universal theory that drama club people get the most sex.

3 generations of punishment.  That's why some people are born, live out their short and miserable lives, and die all within the confines of a prison camp.  About as close to hell on Earth as you can get.

that's the worst part, you must live in constant terror of a family member making a bad decision or trying to escape the country. Being killed is probably a better fate than those prison camps based on the descriptions I've read...

I don't know what your high school was like but there was a very clear line between the drama club and the good looking, socially well adjusted people who also participated in theatrical productions in the school's I've worked at. Even the marching band kids looked down on them.

Probably about 80% of it.  Though I couldn't say how many people are affected by that special brand of lunacy they've got over there.  Such an odd way to go about living the one life you've got.

Eh, our theatrical productions tended to divide into a hierarchy of three camps; the drama geeks at the bottom, the set building/technical crew, and the stars/pretty people at the top.

As a member of the technical crew, I can say definitively that we had the best alcohol and drugs, and threw the best after-show parties.

They're absolutely TERRIFIED.  The entire culture is based on never-ending fear of everyone.  You couldn't even trust your own family.  That's how this anachronism continues along.  The worst part is that they are led to believe that the whole world works this way, it's just how it is.  Foreign media is forbidden, even reading a worst Korean newspaper can be punishable by death.  Foreign broadcasts are jammed.  It's an information black hole, which is why it's unlikely to change from within.

If the shiat ever hits the fan and the regime collapses, the culture shock is going to be like nothing ever seen before.  German reunification was NOTHING compared to what Korean unification would be.

Actually it's is much more like a theocratic dictatorship. The Kim's are held up as, and revered, as near to gods as one can imagine (think pharaohs).

That's religion kiddo - every conservatives idea of 'paradise'.

/I think the money even has "In Kim We Trust" on it.

Nah, they keep a crate of those things around to plant. Kim Il Sung dictated that three generations of a family should be purged. They keep enough "evidence" around to make sure that they can get everyone who pisses them off.

Some political experts think this execution is more about the singer being his ex-girlfriend (Remember the "Excellent Horse-Like Lady" song?).  She remained a high-profile singer even after Kim Jong-Un married someone else.  It sells better in North Korea to say that they were making illicit videos and reading bibles.

The reunification pains are going to be unprecedented, but (Chinese) cell phones are relatively widespread in Best Korea. So there is some inflow (and sharing) of information.

To anyone interested, I highly recommend Escape from Camp 14

Its the story of a guy who was born in one of these prison camps and is the only known person to escape.

Another report on the story:  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/northkorea/10272953/Ki m -Jong-uns-ex-lover-executed-by-firing-squad.html

It includes this tidbit:

"She was luckier than Kim Chol, vice minister of the army, who was executed with a mortar round in October 2012.

Kim Chol was reportedly executed for drinking and carousing during the official mourning period after Kim Jong-il's death.

On the explicit orders of Kim Jong-un to leave 'no trace of him behind, down to his hair,' according to South Korean media, Kim Chol was forced to stand on a spot that had been zeroed in for a mortar round and 'obliterated.' "

Yeah ...

Which is why China routinely repatriates North Koreans that illegally crossed and workaday South Koreans want no part of it.   Its nearly an entire country of people who could not survive in the modern world.
