They were communists.
That's why we had to send the Smothers Brothers to reeducation camps.

So we should instead focus on positive tunes like Joe Hill's Power of a Union?

What about Paul Robeson? Once the highest paid entertainer in the US, black or white, and now almost erased from history books, including his days as a football All American, and his ground breaking for race relations in this nation, because he dared ask the question "Why should black men go to Korea to fight, when they're getting lynched back home?"

You know, positive folks songs, that encompass the struggle of our immigrant forebears? Or how about Woody Guthrie, who wrote songs that a lot of folks edit, because they have inconvenient lines that illustrate that the divides that we see today are nothing new? What about Johnny Cash, and what folks kept calling a subversive lyrics of Doc Watson?

Maybe folks might just like Arlo Guthrie, when he just sings about how pretty America is?

I hate to break this to folks, but folk music has long been a hotbed of protest songs, keeping the dream of a fairer society alive, and immortalizing wrongs done to the common folk. Take a long, hard listen to those Irish folks songs, the British, even the Scots' and you'll find a heap of folks who were pissed off, and looking for a pound of flesh. Yes, let's bring back MOAR folk songs, so that you can hear Joe Hill and Woodie Guthrie ring again, because, in fairness, it may be time for their message again.

If Fox News wants to talk about Jay-Z, they should listen to the lyrics to "Murder to Excellence" off "Watch the Throne". Or countless other songs by him and other artists that talk about serious issues, both within their own communities and society in general.
