Meh.  My Persians seem just as hairy:

i43.tinypic.com

Can't find a good hairy picture of Deucalion at the moment, but he's at least as hairy as Starlight, the Blue Persian.  Freya (the Tortie Persian) has thinner fur.

Persians are very hairy cats.  They look a lot larger than they actually are because of all the fur.  It also means you have to brush them.  A lot.

/And wipe their eye boogers.

The Colonel is only brushed 3 times a week???

A friend of mine brushes her silver Persian every day like clockwork just to keep things manageable. I wonder if his fur is special. Maybe he has a contract with Bumble & Bumble or something.

Gorgeous kitties. I've been considering a persian. How bad is the shedding? How is their disposition? We're a one semi-feral, drop-off, outside kitty family. I would love a sweet inside kitty.

Nothing wrong with a bit of shrubbery surrounding the ol sausage wallet, in fact I prefer it, but that's a full blown redwood forest. Trim that shiat back a bit.

Seconded.  Or Himalayan, which of course is Persian/Siamese.  I can't post pics of mine from work, but my Himi is the sweetest thing, calm and accepting of kids, dogs, other cats, ferrets.

Persians are a bit unique.

First, there are the grooming requirements.  The shedding isn't that bad *IF* you brush them every day or so, but yeah, they do shed.  A lot.  They also get knots in their fur, especially where their legs move.

Then, we have the staining/eye booger situation.  You have to wipe their eyes regularly, but some Persians more often than others.  The staining isn't a problem per se, but it's unattractive on a light colored cat.  The darker ones, like the torties (Freya) and blues (Starlight) don't seem to get noticeable staining, but our red tabby, Deucalion, does get noticeable staining because his fur is a tan color.

As far as temperament goes, that largely depends on a number of factors:  The breeding situation (were they regularly handled by the breeder, and regularly groomed?), how often you handle them, genetics (see:   Tortitude), when you get them fixed, and just plain individuality.

For example, we have a tortoise-shell calico Persian named Freya.  She wasn't from a breeder, she was an "accidental" kitty.  She doesn't really have "tortitude", and she's friendly.  She lets little kids pick her up.  She was fixed prior to coming into heat.

Deucalion is generally amenable to being picked up and petted, but he's a little nippy at times.  Not hard, just playful bites.  He doesn't like being brushed, even though his breeder brushed him pretty much daily.  He was fixed just a bit after reaching maturity, and he likes to dominate.

Starlight was an actual show cat that we got from a breeder, who had gotten her spayed after her first litter because of a health issue of some kind.  She couldn't be shown anymore because the rules say the cats must be unaltered, and obviously she couldn't produce any more litters, and the breeder was looking for a good home for her.   She is aloof most of the time, but friendly to strangers who walk in, as long as you don't try to pick her up.  She *HATES* being picked up.

Our departed Loki, though, loved to be groomed.  He would come running whenever he heard the grooming comb rattle.  Only place he didn't like it was sensitive areas.

Some other considerations:  Keep the fur on the back-end near what my son likes to call the "dirty volcano" short, to minimize turds getting stuck there.

They are more high-maintenance than a typical short-hair domestic cat, in other words, but actually less work (I think) than a dog, and you can get short-haired Persians.  They are called "Exotics".

This is why I think of my Himi as the miracle cat.  I don't brush him, and he doesn't clot up.  He had one clotty spot once, but after combing it out I found a little bramble stuck in there someone must have carried in the house at some point.  His eyes are the same way, no tear staining/goopy stuff, maybe I wipe them once a month.

No poop catching in the back either, even though he's 14 and not quite as "squatty in the box" as he used to be.

But I freely admit he's an anomaly.  Other long haired cats I've had require exactly what you said.
