If we can grow brains in the lab, then maybe the zombie overlords won't need to harvest ours.

Hasn't the GOP been growing miniature brains for years?

They've got a lot of miniaturization to do yet before they can put them in the heads of Birthers, anti-Vax campaigners and Glenn Beck fans.

Because People in power are Stupid: How do you know it isn't you?

I used to scare myself as a teen considering if I was just a brain in a jar living a simulated reality (this was way before the matrix). I would enter these altered states where I was convinced reality didn't exist.

I grew out of it.

I don't know if that was a good thing or not.

So not at all a human brain? Maybe they just need to pray a soul into it?

Not sure quite how to feel about this.

On the one hand, I know a brain at that stage of development isn't supposed to be conscious, and without sensory input it should be unable to "feel" anything, much less pain.

But, on the other hand, I know we know even less about the brain than we think we do.

And the truly scary part, is that our legal system is so mired in an early 19th century worldview, and our lawmakers so beholden to immoral tycoons and superstitious madmen, that there is basically zero chance of drawing up a reasonable set of rules to decide when something like this has gone too far, until long after it's already gone too far.

So they create a brain, essentially a living being, and at the end of the study they will kill it.

In some ways, this is morally worse than abortion, which at least has the excuse of eliminating an accidentally created life. This was a fully preconceived life that was created and now destroyed. Human life, at that.

"The pea-sized structures reached the same level of development as in a nine-week-old foetus, but are incapable of thought."

How do we know this? It's not like we can directly experiment on a 9-week fetus brain. Are they basing this solely on mass and appearance of structures?

Also:

Does a living brain grown in a test tube contain a soul? Or, more generically, if Man invents Man, does God bestow that new Man with an immortal soul?

I mean, I'd say no, but I'm an atheist and I don't believe in an immortal soul. But, I'm not the one making policy decisions that affect the hundreds of millions of people in this country.

Wow, so theoretically I can have my body stripped of everything except for my nerves, brain, stem, etc. ... keep it in a nutrient and oxygen rich tank of circulating liquid, and if my brain is kept fed like that, I'd still be considered 'alive' ...

fascinating ...

These "brainlets" never had the potential to mature past the size of a fetal brain at nine weeks of development. Never had the potential of becoming a person.
This is no worse morally than growing sheets of skin in vitro for burn patients.

How is either of those things even remotely like creating a living human brain for the purpose of then killing it?

Or do you think cows and viruses are equivalent to people?

One of these things isn't a "living human brain." It's more akin to the test-tube meat that was in the news a month or so ago.

According to the pro-choicers, a nine-week-old fetus isn't a person , otherwise abortion would be murder.
