Oddly, most SNL movies are better than they should be. Not great, but they all have their moments. Except for that horrid Stuart Smalley flick.

Some actually turn out to be good, like The Blues Brothers or Wayne's World.

I'm still waiting for a Toonces movie.

Wayne's World and Blues Brothers are the only watchable movies. Pat sucked, Night at the Roxbury sucked, Stuart Saves his Family sucked, Ladies Man sucked, Superstar sucked, Conehead's was meh, Macgruber was... I dunno didn't watch it.

Mike Myers has been pitching a Sprockets movie for years, but it might be too late for that, and really: It's tough to flesh out a 1.5 hour movie out of a one-dimensional joke that gets tiring even within the confines of a 5 minute skit. Could you imagine how awful a Gilly movie would be (and don't think they haven't thought of it). The best movies succeed when the characters are fleshed out well and have something else going on other than a solo gimmick.

Although not an actual SNL character, Pee Wee Herman was the brainchild of Phil Hartman and Paul Rubins and they worked on that character for years before they got it right, both as Groundlings and as a stage show -- and he was so fleshed out and three dimensional that Rubins could walk out with no script and just improv Pee Wee for a whole hour and have it be the funniest god damn thing you've ever seen. That's what made him ready for the silver screen.

I don't see that level of preparation and work behind any modern characters. A character has to be more than just a punchline for a whole Universe to be created around them, and the Universe shouldn't exist entirely for their sake, but just in spite of them.

While I agree that the Stuart Smalley flick was a cinematic abortion it did provide what I think is the biggest larf I've ever gotten from a SNL-related flick.  Granted it may have been the only laugh in the movie but the "Okay, Jodie, I would never ordinarily say this, but... is there any way you can get to a pound cake? " bit had me howling.

^^^^^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^^^^

Subby is full of shiat, if anyone didn't read the article, this is the most important part:
"We talked a little bit about an idea for a movie..."

Yeah, they had some beers and wondered out loud if they could do it, and pretty much immediately decided it wouldn't work. Big farking deal, Subby.

And no, it wouldn't work. Stefon is perfect where he resides(Resided), and it wouldn't fit anywhere else. It also wouldn't stretch into a movie, and Hader knew that. It was just a random bullshiat session, and he really shouldn't have even mentioned it, lest morons like subby got ahold of the idea and ran with it.

2013-08-28 09:20:21 PM
The thing I respected Mike Meyers for is that he held off all efforts to do a Sprockets movie, even when he was red-hot from the first Austin Powers movie.  Unfortunately, he lost me when he did Goldmember, The Love Guru and The Cat In The Hat.

Stefon is very similar to Dieter from Sprockets. The five minute skit contains all you need to know, and to expand upon it just stretches out the balloon thinner and thinner until it pops from being full of nothing.  Hader has so much other and better material to draw from, I liked his cameo in  The Venture Bros..  Blues Brothers was lightning in a bottle, and even that couldn't be duplicated in a sequel. But these sad bastards all keep holding out for movie deals and Lorne keeps letting them all take a shot at it, hoping to make one more big score he really doesn't need. Every SNL spin-off movie since Blues Bros. except for (barely) Wayne's World 1 has been shiat. There are twenty years' worth of examples.

He's history's greatest monster for suggesting a movie be made out of that. And I say this as someone who was entertained by the skit. Maybe he's got some idea rattling around in the lizard part of his brain that asks why it would be so much different than a Wayne's World movie. In that he is provably wrong. It would be right up there with a Toonces movie. It would be worse than Night at the Roxbury, which was a terrible idea in the first place, since they never made a movie about Steve Martin's "Two Wild and Crazy Guys" which is the version that actually allows for a script, instead of watching two loathsome characters headbob to "what is love."

Wait, did they make an "It's Pat" movie? Jesus Christ. That proves that aliens don't exist, because they would have obliterated humanity for that.

2013-08-28 09:26:13 PM
Hader was on Simmons' and the Nerdist pods recently, and I hate to say it, but he kind of sounded like a guy who knows he's destined to spend the next 20-30 years either playing bit parts in more famous friends' movies, or churning through a few CBS sitcoms as "Wacky Friend From College". In both cases he was asked why he decided it was time to leave SNL (obviously), and the answer was basically "Uh, family....I guess?" Just didn't sound like he was really convinced he did the right thing.

You're in for a treat: that's the one where Bowie brought Klaus Nomi along as a guest performer, and there's a robot dog for "TVC15".  It's one of the single best (and weirdest) musical performances ever on SNL!

As to SNL character-based movies, I assume the only reason they get made is that Lorne Michaels (who is always the producer on them) wants to add onto or remodel his house in the Hamptons.

And a lot of them join SNL with the sole purpose of creating some character at getting their movie. That's why Phil Hartman was  so great. Sure he had characters and was a supporting actor in some movies but he was mostly just a solid performer who made every sketch he was in at least watchable.

And he's dead and Adam Sandler makes $30 mill a picture.

Dammit, I swear she was the one I was thinking of... There's someone out there who was hot as hell and didn't look her age, I'd always thought it was her. Great, you know how hard these reverse searches are? I'm gonna have to figure out who it was though, because it will drive me nuts.

I could have sworn it was her, because I remember feeling almost dirty because of it. Oh well, my bad.

Yeah, my wife and I were really excited, there aren't a lot of actors coming up who are really that interesting/good. Lohan seemed to have 'it', she was hot, she was good, she seemed to be a natural, she had fun, etc. Then she fell apart. Holy Crap.

Emma Stone looks like a good replacement though. She seems to be what Lohan would have been at this point, and we really like her alot.

I'll still mourn the loss of the potential that Lindsay Lohan had.

I think that there was some sort of quantum, supernatural disturbance that tore through Lindsay Lohan leaving behind all the toxic vileness while all of the purity and charm was cast out and became Jennifer Lawrence.

Shiat, forgot about her. I like her a lot, too. Emma Stone is the sassy, sexy, husky-voice and Jennifer Lawrence isn't he hot, sweet girl next door.

In a way, they seem like the two sides of the Lindsay Lohan coin, with none of the bad parts. Glad you made the call on Lawrence.

They could constantly cut away to John Mulaney changing his cuecards as Stefon's reading, it would be GENIUS!

/Not really
/But thats why the sketches are funny, Mulaney changes the club descriptions they rehearsed on the fly so Hader is reading it for the first time as he's delivering.
