They'll be out of business in 5 years, tops.  They just gave every players ever suspended for receiving compensation grounds for a lawsuit.  Terrelle Pryor alone is going to cost them millions.

Those were my first thoughts as well.  Terrelle, though, had already committed the sin of not playing in the SEC, so I'm not sure how that will affect his legal grounds.

Eh, I wish.

CSS--I was living in Kentucky when Tim Couch was all the rage.  My husband and I were in a Jeep dealership getting some work done on the Cherokee when in came Timmy.  I swear to Cthulhu every salesman and manager got the biggest boners ever.  Timmy was trailed by an obvious booster with an even bigger boner.  "Anything you want, Tim, anything you want!"

And this was Kentucky, where basketball >>>>>>>> football.  I can only imagine what it's like in Texas, Mississippi, Florida, etc.

I'm beginning to think it's time the accreditation agencies step in and tell the universities to divest themselves of their athletic departments.

It was a nice idea a century ago, but American colleges are the only place left in the world where you see big-time athletics and effectively bottleneck professional players through the schools.  It might be time for someone with the power to do so force the separation of school and sport.

It would be cool if Manziel had decided as a freshman in high school that the NCAA was corrupt as shiat and recorded a video detailing his plan to become a superstar football player, then purposely do something illegal and get a slap on the wrist for being white. All because the NCAA had screwed over his favorite player, "whoever", for breaking the rules while having the gall to be black. Everything he's done up until now has all been part of the plan, and at the end of the season he makes the video public(because why disrupt the season any more than it already is) as a giant screw you to the NCAA. Then he goes pro.

I mean, I don't think that was what he was going for, but it sure would have been cool.

Cam Newton and Johnny Football have set the blueprint for kids in college football to make money.

1. Wait until the year you are going to declare for the NFL.
2. Cash out as much as you can without leaving a paper trail or letting on to your college admin.
3. If the shiat hits the fan then lawyer up and deny deny deny.
4. Walk away from college football, get drafted, and don't look back.

If I was Jadeveon Clowney I would be selling as much merchandise as I could sign to boosters right now for straight cash.  By the time the NCAA gets around to investigating, I will already be drafted first overall by Oakland.

Yeah, I don't think this is a racial thing, or even the NCAA showing deliberate favoritism, it's the NCAA being worried because certain power conferences have gotten so powerful that the NCAA is worried about keeping the reigns on them and is therefore willing to look the other way more than they should.

The NCAA is non-profit and mainly concerned with managing the nuts and bolts of collegiate athletics.  It doesn't matter to them at the end of the day if the national champs are A&M, Alabama, Oregon, or Duke.

Granted, being non-profit doesn't mean that NCAA employees aren't concerned with keeping their jobs, and they realize that they'd become much less relevant, and likely have to cut staff and compensation, if the big FBS conferences decided to form their own association free of NCAA oversight.  They're already halfway there in football as the BCS series isn't an NCAA run championship.

If Manziel was black the decision would have been the same, it was based on preserving relationships with a big name school more than anything else.  It's fair to criticize the NCAA on their lopsided and erratic enforcement of the rules, but blaming it on race is off the mark.  The NCAA is being extorted by the SEC, Big 12, Big 10, PAC, and to a lesser degree the ACC.  It's certainly upsetting to the vast majority of NCAA institutions to see them giving favorable treatment to the big boys, but at this point the NCAA has let it go on for so long that it's basically self preservation.

Has the media been behind him?  Maybe I've been reading the wrong sites, but I've seen plenty of bashing on him for being a whiny entitled jerkass.

No one has been calling him a thug or a gang banger. If he was black, or worse black with high profile tatoos, they would

See, that's because he IS a whiny entitled jerkass.  Sadly, a Black athlete would be characterized as a thug for half the stuff Manziel has done, regardless of whether or not he was one.

- He's been charged for  disorderly conduct, failure to identify, and possession of a fictitious driver's license after being involved in a fight.

- The fight started when he was with a friend who said racist slurs at someone else and he defended his racist buddy from getting his ass beat.

- He biatched about a parking ticket and wanted to leave the program over it

- He got paid CASH to buy RIMS in exchange for signing his autograph.

So yeah, imagine a Black athlete doing the same...he'd be labeled a thug after step one.

Wow, I didn't realize he'd done all that.  Yes, I agree, a black athlete would have been called some mighty nasty things for doing the same.

However, the NCAA doesn't rule based on public opinion.  They aren't a government organization, no one votes their leaders in, they just do what they do.  My opinion is that feeding the SEC beast and ameliorating the fears of the big conference schools had more to do with the decision than anything else.  Perhaps if the public were calling him an out of control thug they might have done more, but that really comes down on our own public race culture more than the NCAA.

I'll admit I think the NCAA gets a bad rap.  They do most of what they need to do exceedingly well and with little recognition.  Nobody pays attention to the DII women's softball championship, or the Division 1 men's rowing finals, but they still organize and run them, at a loss.  Even the true Division 1 Football Championship (FCS) playoffs lose money, and some of that comes from the NCAA.  They cover all of college athletics, and do a necessary job that most people never  pay attention to.  I'll fully admit that I think they've created a monster by not flexing their muscles to ban the offshoot BCS series in its infancy when they could have, and for letting the power conference school wield way more influence than they should be able to, but I also realize they're in a tough position at the moment.

The shame of this harsh penalty should really cause Manziel to mull over the error of his ways, realize that materialism is shallow and send him off to live in a Buddhist monastery like Rambo.

In Manziel's absence, Texas A&M will start either junior Matt Joeckel or freshman Kenny Hill at quarterback.

They should play this guy and play Yackity Sax* the whole time.

As would all of the coaches in the SWAC and MEAC.  I'm sure there are some other big name program black coaches as well, but I don't follow it enough to name them.

Those were my first thoughts as well.  Terrelle, though, had already committed the sin of not playing in the SEC, so I'm not sure how that will affect his legal grounds.

And a mortal sin it was.  The football gods sent him to hell.

Charlie Strong, James Franklin, etc.

personally i feel like there's different forces going on here: 1) Manziel should be punished for consistency, especially when the evidence (the number of items he signed and the frequency) seems to suggest payment for autographs, 2) student athletes should be paid money, eat dinners, etc. without repercussions as the NCAA makes money directly off the images of said student athletes anyways (this of course, as the NCAA backs out of video games), and 3) lawyer speak of course - but circumstantial evidence doesn't really hold up in court, so at some point the NCAA decided to simply roll over for this kid

either way the NCAA comes out looking like bags of shiat, no i don't think Dez Bryant or Terrelle Pryor should've been punished, but at the same time the zero-tolerance rule has always been asinine in my opinion for the same reason i don't think somebody who has a joint should be thrown in jail - it just leads to shadier shiat, and if the rule can't be enforced all the time anyways then it's ruining kids' lives for nothing

If I'm the Aggies (shudder), I'd have Ol' Johnny up on the concourse signing everything put in front of him for that entire half. I don't think the NC2A thought their cunning plan through very well. What do you suppose the crowd reaction is going to be when their Heisman trophy winner trots out onto the field in the second half?

The NCAA lost all credibility with Jeremy Bloom.

I don't know if Manziel took money for autographs; if he did, he's an idiot.

A plain reading of the rules, though, say that every student athlete should be suspended, since they are allowing their school and the NCAA to make money using their likeness, etc.

A guy I work with is a crazy libertarian and he heard about this story (he doesn't follow sports).

He was angry about the criminalization of making money and said Manziel has every right to make money.

Then he went off on a political rant and showed me a YouTube video of a journalist arguing with Nancy Pelosi about minimum wage. Can't wait til Friday.

He didn't get off because he was white.  If that was the case Cam Newton never would have played in that championship game.

He got off because the NCAA had no concrete evidence of cash changing hands.  No paper trail.  So if they suspended him without that, he would most likely be going to court.  And in court, the NCAA would get their ass handed to them, and most likely people would realize they have no real right to have as much authority as they do.  They would rather sweep thios under the rug to cover their own asses.

That's probably the only part of any Rice football game worth watching.

Unless you're a fan of total failure.

Wrong.

The team is pretty good sometimes.  Even when they aren't, the conference games are usually interesting.  C-USA football is a lot of fun to watch, unless you're one of those casual fans who will only watch a game if both teams playing are ranked in the top ten.

The non-conference games are mostly there to bring in money to fund the rest of the season, of course.

The NCAA has become such a joke. This just adds to it. Oregon has recruiting violations or something like that and they get a slap in the wrist, North Carolina has academic fraud for the football and perhaps the basketball team too and they decide that it did not violate NCAA rules. I could go on and on but you probably get the drift by now.

 Manziel family is wealthy.
Manziel doesn't need the $$ but thought he was entitled.   He is also a huge moneymaker for the SEC and the Aggies.   So maybe he should be compensated.   But a one half suspension against the Owls is like a one half suspension against a Pop Warner team.  Now if this was a Mathlete competition......

It looks to me like you're arguing that the NCAA didn't dig deeply enough to find the proof that Johnny Manziel took money, while at the same time arguing that they dug plenty deep in Cam's case.
