Don't be silly: earthworms don't run.

And these colors don't run.

So... these colors are earthworms.

On the bright side, earthworms in your water supply are an indicator that your water is relatively clear of fracking chemicals, clean, and capable of supporting life. Except for, you know, all the earthworm poop. And the sexing.

Unless those earthworms are dead, in which case there might be other issues here.

"Gibby says the worms are passing through water filters and getting into distribution lines."

So what are they filtering for?   Anything bigger than a half inch?

Passing THROUGH the filters?

What are these filters made of, rebar at one inch spacing?

If the last stage in your water treatment process is filtering out earthworms, you may have bigger problems before that stage.

How do you think water systems tend to work?  Should I not ruin it for you?

There are large tanks that water is pumped in to, then out of; for areas fed by aquifers (wells, whathaveyou) those tanks are inground.  There are thus simply very large concrete tanks that water is pumped in and out of.  They toss chlorine into the water tank to kill stuff, every once in a while they dredge out the sludge.  If you ever saw the inside of one of those tanks, you'd never want to drink out of the tap again...unless you realize that the world is a dirty place, and that water is substantially cleaner than what nearly everyone else on the planet has.  Sometimes grime happens.

I thought all water came from untainted mountain springs and was treated by reverse osmosis.

Our water system (in the socialist wastelands of Canada) works like this. It's more than just a hole in the ground and a bottle of bleach:

Water from the two reservoirs enters a rapid-mix head works, where coagulant is added. From here it enters flocculation basins and is subjected to a slow mix process. The subsequent direct filtration phase uses a two metre deep filter dual-media bed, consisting of anthracite and sand and from here the filtered water enters the UV disinfection unit.

Flowing into treated water storage clear-wells, the pH is then adjusted before the water enters the Capilano and Seymour distribution networks. [...] secondary chlorination remains a feature, to guarantee the safety of the potable water travelling through the municipal distribution systems.

Look, man, you really don't want to get out of bed one night to get a drink of water, turn on the tap and have a herd of buffalo come stampeding out.
