People have been taking pics at historical places for as long as there have been cameras, the only difference I see is that they're taking pics of themselves instead of having someone else take them. If this is all you have to complain about, you really need to get off of the internet for a while and experience the real world.

Getting long in the tooth; stay the hell off my lawn; but I don't really see the problem with any of those. Granted, they don't scream 'I have class' at the best of times, but really stubby, by 'teen taking a selfie at the most inappropriate place', I expected a exhibitionist stoner duckface orange tan-spray selfie, with an open beer and middle finger raised, posed in front of the casket of a child cancer victim at the funeral home with the single mother double-amputee visibly breaking down at the teen's intrusion.

/  I mean, go big or go home, right?

Anne Frank was a teenager. Trust me, if they had iPhones back then, her famous diary would have been nothing but shots of her in her underwear with a pink sheitel and misquoted Berthold Brecht lyrics.

Well, that was stupid. This should be a contest. Historical figures taking selfies at the worst times.

I just think taking a family picture for your family to see is a vastly different than taking a "selfie" while trying to look sexy or cool, then posting on FB for the world to see.  It is stupid, disrespectful, and worthy of ridicule.

There is an interesting psychological shift going on here.

When I go on vacation, I take pictures of the places I go.

Today, when people go on vacation they take pictures of themselves...in front of places they go.

It's as if, in the day of instant access to media from all over the world, they must place themselves in the picture to prove they were actually there or something.  But, they are also the majority of the picture - not "Here's the family in front of Niagra Falls", but "...and here's me again, and over my left shoulder you can kinda see some water - that's Niagra Falls!"

2013-08-28 01:37:48 PM
At least they don't make out during "Schindler's List".

It was apparently a sub at Pearl Harbor. And presumably, b/c she's Asian, this is inappropriate. Although on the Tumblr there's a white kid doing the same with a ship in the background so who knows.

news flash: people under 25 lack a full grasp of social mores.

there will be no followup story, because everyone on the goddamn planet already knows this.

And here's where your mother sleeps

And it's so sad to see the world agree
That they'd rather see their faces fill with flies

Well if you go to the Tumblr, there is a kid grimace-smiling with his grandmother's casket behind him.

And the teen giving a laughing "horror face" from inside an Auschwitz gas chamber.

Will those do?

Pictures taken today are uploaded almost imediately to the internet.

Pictures taken in previous times would have been sent for development, then either put in a photo album or filed away. Would have been a looooooooong time before anyone noticed enough to be outraged.

Two of my (very immature and stupid) college friends had an amazing view of the World Trade Center from their apartment. Literally it felt like you could touch them. When the planes hit, these girls didn't realize truly what was going on. They told me they thought it was for like a movie or something - they certainly didn't think NYC was under attack. So what did they do? They took selfies with the WTC burning behind them. I mean, making duck faces, with their tongues out, high fiving, etc. Afterwards they were so embarrassed by it, they burned the pictures. I think I may have been the only person besides them to ever see those pics.

I wish they hadn't done that though. Honestly EXCEPT for them making stupid duck faces at the camera, those were still some of the most amazing pictures I have ever seen in my life from 9/11. I still think about those pics to this day. Not to get graphic, but you could SEE people falling from the windows down to the color of their clothes and paper and computers and things flying wildly through the air. They were.... in the most awful and sick way.... beautiful pictures. I told them they should give them to the police or perhaps media as they could help identify some of the missing people.. but they (understandably) refused, even when I showed them how to cut out the pics of themselves.

Ladies, if you're going to take selfies, take them in the locker room while you're naked.  And also your friends should be naked with you and participate in the picture.

How is that different than any other form of acquiring photos of oneself and placing them on facebook et al?

It is just all attention whoring all the way down.

Oh, there's a decades-old picture in a family album somewhere of me and my siblings rolling around and doing cartwheels on the grass in front of the Kennedy Memorial on Cape Cod.

We were about 4 to 10 years old at the time.

I gotta disagree with you on this. Yea, I like taking a ton of photos on vacation because it is fun. I can take some pretty good ones and they look nice in my house. That said, I'm not a professional and I will *never* take the best photo of Niagara falls. When we drag the photo albums out (and we do) we want to say 'OH there is great uncle Sam when he hiked to Vernal Falls' or 'Wow- mom- you in the 60s looks EXACTLY like cousin Trudy' or 'Oh, so *that* is the old Buick you guys are always talking about piling into.'

I mean, long term, I actually do want photos of my family because I like looking at them. These photos aren't for you, they're for me and my family members and people who care about us. They're for our ancestors 100 years down the road.

I was about to judge these kids harshly until I remembered I once unwittingly picnicked and made out on a Holocaust Memorial in Paris.

In my defense it was dusk, I was in my cups, I was young and in lust, and I am thoroughly ashamed of myself to this day.

OMG, kids taking pictures of themselves visiting places?!!  Truly a sign of the inevitable decline of civilization and completely different from the pictures my grandparents took of themselves pushing over the leaning tower of Pisa dozens of years ago.

I still don't see a difference.

Here's a pic of someone taken in front of the 9/11 memorial:

And here's the one from the article:

Please explain to me how the first one is perfectly fine while the second one is "stupid, disrespectful, and worthy of ridicule"
