After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Hutchinson became interested in arming school personnel, he said. He was invited to attend an "active shooter" training and - using a rubber bullet-loaded pistol - he mistakenly shot a teacher who was confronting a "bad guy."

The experience gave Hutchinson some pause, but he still supports giving schools the authority to decide how best to secure their campuses.

Heh. Friendly fire, even.

Just the chief custodian, where schools are concerned.

If he can be trusted to see that the boiler doesnt blow, killing everyone in the building, he can be trusted to at least try and take down some nut that shows up at his builing, intending harm to the kids and staff in his care.

/ would not arm teachers however
// let's be realistic

I wonder what his stance is on education...

From Wikipedia:  Jeremy Young Hutchinson (born March 4, 1974) is a Republican member of the Arkansas State Senate from District 22.

...oh. Never mind.

Most likely scenario is that a armed teacher will accidentally leave their gun in the bathroom after they take a shiat and a student will find it. Happens to cops and other law enforcement all the time.

There was a great question raised earlier in this debate about arming teachers and that was: who is going to insure the school district so when something goes wrong and it is not a rubber bullet in a training exercise and someone is injured or dies and they sue the district?

I'm all for requiring a class on the proper handling of a firearm before you can purchase one, so long as the class, range time and ammo used in the class are all free.

True, funny now.

But what about when it happens for real? Some wanna-be hero pops a teacher or couple of uninvolved students?

No doubt the NRA will be there to downplay the "unfortunate exception." Hell, with their balls, they'll probably spin it as merely a sub-optimal proof of concept.

It's such a confusing issue to me. One one hand you have these science-loving liberal government-handout union-thug teachers that I want to see strung up and executed for treason against our Constitution and for propping up and teaching impressionable young people that Obummer is really the President.. but on the other hand I want everybody to own at least 3 guns. One AR-15 Freedom Rifle, one on your hip and one concealed in an ankle holster.

And who cares if this guy accidentally shot somebody during a training exercise? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. And by patriots and tyrants I'm pretty sure Jefferson was talking about teachers.

Maybe things haved changed a whole lot, but when I was in high school, there were plenty of teachers I wouldn't have trusted with guns. Not sure why anyone things teachers are beyond mood swings and anger issues.

Then again, if I knew Mr. Nelson had a glock under his sportscoat, I might have behaved a little better in those study halls.

Obviously, the NRA solution to that problem would be even more guns in schools, so someone can shoot the guy who shot the teacher while trying to shoot the shooter.

Not sure about the price on the class/range/ammo, but here's the KS shooting test to get a concealed carry license. I can't believe it's that simple.

OK, so everybody could pay for my training (which is for the good of all) , not just me! We should do that for healthcare too, right?

Isn't that where we're already heading?  I pay a shiatload in premiums (and I'm young and healthy) so I have no beef with that since my costs would likely go down.

Massive tax on guns and ammo should suffice.

Smeggy Smurf: What we need are more trained people with firearms who have to maintain their training.

It sounds like the district allowed the guns, but not for plebes such as teachers.  The district had to
go out and pay someone an entire salary just to have a gun present.  It sounds like the desire was to
simply let other persons be able to carry.

Certainly, we would not want every Tom, Dick, and Harry teacher to just walk around with guns in school.
The teachers need to be trained.  Also at least working at the district for 10 years so  we don't have some 23 year old being all emotional because of a breakup and her life is over.  After 10 years, the retards should quit
and the administration should have some idea who is stable.

Keeping guns that would help deter intentional shooters in schools because their might be an accidental shooting is a brilliant position to take.

Also where the hell is the ironic tab.  The one time something on fark actually deserved it, it isn't used.
