rickythepenguin: Ow! That was my feelings!: nobody would be surprised by a Broncos win by 17 going away, either.

that's the thing thoguh, anybody winning by 17 can't be termed a surprise.  not in week 1.  and that game could end up 24-21 (advantage ravens) due to first week sloppies and i twouldn't surprise anyone.  8.5 is just stupid for week one when we don't know dick about anybody.

except the jets

And the Bills.

But nobody is picking the Broncos by 8.5. That is a Vegas number created to spur gambling. I'm a Broncos fan and I think the number is BS, it's a damn gambling number, not a prediction!

Well the bills are as of right now starting a qb who's last team when 3 and farking 8. And they just lost one of their corner backs. Even with Brady throwing to the waterboy and the one guy on the patriots not convicted of a serious crime they can still burn the buffallo bums.

ladodger34: Ow! That was my feelings!: rickythepenguin: Ow! That was my feelings!: Early season games can be very greasy and no way would I bet DEN/BAL with the line where it is.

due to it being 8.5, i am very tempted to take BAL.  that's FOREVER points.  i've said this for a few days now.  now, denver may win by 13, you never know.  but you don't know dick in the first 2 weeks of the season, arguably 4.  honestly, would a ravens win by 10 shock you?  that's the thing.  the ravens + 8.5, that's ALL DAY ARRADAY, sonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Yeah, smart money is now heading in the Ravens direction, don't blame them, but nobody would be surprised by a Broncos win by 17 going away, either.

I'm not a betting guy, but you always have to wonder why Vegas is tempting folks to bet on the Ravens with that big of a spread.

It's not a wonder at all. The number is 8.5 because people keep betting up the Broncos. It is GAMBLERS driving the number, not Vegas or fans or the NFL. Way more people seem to think the Broncos are gonna romp, that is why the number is where it is. Take advantage, if you disagree. I'm guessing Vegas would love some disagreement money on the Ravens, at this point.

Actually, let me correct myself. I KNOW Vegas wants money on the Ravens, because 8.5. Vegas is BEGGING people to place money on the Ravens.

thanks, i know how lines work.  it is too much for week 1.  the end.

the only logical reason for there to be an 8.5 spread in THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE is, as i've said for a few days now, is if you have a 4-0, 7-2 team atop every other offensive/defensive category taking on a 1-3, 2-6 team whose season is already over.

week 1, this number is just illogical.  two playoff teams, transition on both, and.....gah.  i cannot STFU about how nutbag this line is.

OK, so...it's a conspiracy? WTF do you think is going on? Vegas stopped wanting to make money?

Yeah, it's a ridiculous line, it happens, geez.

no, but if they get slammed with Ravens money vegas will lose more, if in fact they keep it close.  all i'm saying is this is an extremely suspect line for week 1.  week 12, or the post-Spygate Pats year, when they were being installed at like, -12, -14.5, and i think 16 or 17 (?), like NCAA lines, i understand that but that was when they were murdering people left and right.

week 1, illogical.  week 6, week 10, week 15, with empirical data?  ok, i'll buy that.  the end.

ok, I think the line is too much, but most folks think the Broncos are contenders and most folks don't think the Ravens are(off season losses). The game is in Denver. 1st game of the season....

Weeks 1 and 2 are the best time to get in on crazy lines because Vegas (and the world) doesn't know what the hell these teams are going to come out looking like.

8.5 is real nice teaser territory, though, since you're getting either Ravens +14.5 or Broncos -2.5, which puts you in the "Broncos have to win by 3 possessions (basically)" or "Broncos only have to win by a FG at home" category, depending on what you believe.

CSB:  arizona's super bowl year, we were i think 4.5 or 5.5 HOME dogs to the Eagles.  I had a chunk of change in an account that may or may not still exists *cough*.  i ran a bunch of numbers -- the threads could be found by someone extremely bored -- and I concluded, from memory, that D-Mac had gotten home wins versus younger QBs but aside from not performing well OTR (??), the Eagles hadn't done well against more experienced QBs.  Took the moneyline.  cards were 220?  240?  i don't know.  i just felt there was no way we'd lose, based upon my numbers.    won big motherfarking time.  bigtime.

driving home fromt eh game, i was like, "ok, good news, bad news.  won like a BANDIT.  bad news.  i gotta tell the wife i've been gambling." she was pissed but when she saw the check she got over it.  and i told her i wouldn't bet again.  and that was about 4 years ago.  so there is precedent fro betting the proverbial house.

/winnings:  more than $1500, less than $7,000

Cool, then you're a gambler and should know to be cautious when Vegas appears to be giving away free money, like Broncos -8.5.

Everything positive for Denver in terms of betting is ridiculous.  Want the over on 11 wins?  -170 two weeks ago at the MGM casinos.  Super Bowl? 9:2, 3:1 to win the AFC Title and I believe I saw -260 at Caesar's for them to win the AFC West.  I'm guessing all of their lines are going to be high this year until they can find a middle number.  You gotta lay the wood on anything for them.  Which would be great if we weren't potentially one Peyton Manning blindside hit away from the Brock Osweiler era.

This would never happen in Pittsburgh.

Just last week at the Pirate game they showed Mario Lemieux and Art Rooney III bullshiatting up in a box.

All through the Stanley Cup playoffs they kept showing Brett Keisel, Willie Colon, Neil Walker, etc in the stands.

Because Pittsburgh teams play for the city and that's why they all wear the same city colors.

No excuse for a championship team not opening at home - this just shows what a second rate sports town looks like.

I would like to apologize for that last post.

After reading it I was ashamed of how badly it was written let alone it was 90 minutes after the last posting in this thread.

Again, sorry - need to get my head back in the game and stop these stupid mistakes.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. It was a beating 3 weeks before the playoff game when the teams met.

None of that changes the final score of the game in January. Or Februaruy. Deface a poster, hell, win the game next week. Bottom line is it doesn't change the loss. Deal with it.

It also doesn't change the fact that a 9.5 spread is stupid.

This Looks Fun: With no dog in this fight, I don't think they should have ads for the other team. It seems in poor taste.

Sort of moving into NBA style marketing, forget about your own team and promote playing against the super bowl winners.

I would loved to have seen Goddel try this with the Skins when JKC was alive. I seriously doubt JKC would have allowed another teams banners hanged on his stadium.

Then you don't get the prime time game. Bottom line is the whole raft of opening day hullabaloo that Denver is getting is because Baltimore won the Super Bowl, got dicked out of hosting, and Denver happened to be on their schedule.

SenorBenedict: rickythepenguin: AdmirableSnackbar: I think it shows how shiatty of a sports town Baltimore is that it can't handle two events on the same day.

i kinda recall discussions between MLB and the NFL when the scheduleing snafu was first revealed, of moving the game from a night start to a day start, which in theory would have permitted the MLB game to proceed, end at say, 3PM, which would give some time for the shared parking lot to empty so the night football game crowd could fill in....

the parking lot is the issue, especially since you're gonna have 65K-70K for the football game when OPACY only holds -- which they won't for reason i said above, 3rd place team hosting last place team -- perhaps 45K, but will draw maybe what, the high 20s?  who wants to go watch two shiatty teams fight for nothing?

Wait two shiatty teams fight for nothing? Don't be ragging on the Mariners @ Astros!

*sigh* Now I has a sad. Hard to be a Mariners fan.

As a Denverite I see no problem with the banners. It's the NFL promoting the marquee game featuring the two captains of two high-profile teams much like a UFC poster. If there's a problem it's the graphic nightmare they have on the south side of the stadium as they placed the banners with Manning and Flacco facing away from each other (tsk tsk tsk).

Primetime games are great for TV, but suck for the fans in the stands. I'd rather a full season of 1pm Sunday kickoffs, so i dont have to deal with getting home after 1am and then limp to into work the next day.
