Sigh...

Government agents from 74 countries sought information on about 38,000 Facebook users in the first half of this year, with about half the requests coming from the United States, the company said Tuesday.

Clearly Obama's fault...

2013-08-28 11:46:01 AM
This will sure slow down Zuckerberg's immunity deal and the $750 M contact for cloud expertise services to the government.

What? Your girlfriend violated your trust, too?

ThatBillmanGuy: Then don't post anything you're worried about being private. Problem solved.

Sure. Oh, we're also going to monitor your phone calls, so don't say anything you're worried about being private.

And, those cameras we're installing in your bedroom? Just don't do anything you're worried about being private.

Problem solved.

2013-08-28 11:47:28 AM
So out of more than one billion users they gave up 38,000... Anyone want to tell me that percentage? I was an art major but I know it's a super tiny amount considering. I doubt they want to keep track of my Candy Crush scores, so I'm not too worried about it.

*yawn*

If it's on Facebook, and you think it's private in ANY way, you're an ignorant douche and it serves you right if it's your information that got served up.

2013-08-28 11:48:51 AM
Technology and government officials have said criminal investigations are far more common than national security matters as a justification for demanding information from companies.

No one complains when they read a story about the dumb criminal who posted about his crime on Facebook, but just SEEING a number makes people wet their pants and scream police state?!?!?

They didn't even give up 38,000. About 60% of those requests were honored, and TFA even says in the majority of those cases, all they gave up was a name.

POLICE STATE!!!!

They use warrants for PR releases like this.  They use PRISM, to go in the backdoor,  when they don't have a warrant.

Request for Release of Restricted Information
From: Nation of Farkistan
Please Process Immediately

The Nation of Farkistan, in relation to an ongoing investigation and with regard to national and international security formally requests Facebook and it's subordinate entities to turn over the data listed below. Failure to honor or process this request in a timely manner will result in possible damages and or loss of life.

Requested Data
On Shelley Hanovers page (link enclosed), her photos are blocked from non friends. We request the forwarding of all her photos including the hand bra and the new bikini photos. There may be addition information hidden in these photos.
On Marilyn Steadlies page (link enclosed), photos blocked. Request all photos from Party Cove set, Swimming Pool set. Reason: Same as above. Sure. Why not?

These are requested in response to an on going investigation. You are instructed to limit any discussions of these matters and not tell our wives. If this works, we'll have more 'official requests'. Also, it you have any other 'information', please share. We, in the interest of international security, will do the same.

Yeah. We already looked through Strangebeaver's web page. We're not idiots.

Of course even if you use face book for candy crush the feds would know the IP addresses, dates and times of access which could give a pretty decent map of your physical movements.

Infernalist: another reason I'm glad I don't use Facebook.

Unfortunately, in the future a guy running for President, Senator, whatever does use facebook and may have since he was a little kid -- if his opponent has a supporter on the inside who can access PRISM to leak personal info, he's farked.

This shiat will be (if not already has) misused.

But I want my 765 very close FB Friends to read about my success at distributing pressure cookers by anal impaction. And nobody else!1!

Seriously, these days I use FB mainly to share important data gleaned from Fark. Because my Friends are serious people -- medical-device developers, functionaries for large publishers, hot lesbian coeds, Creative Writing professors, etc. -- who despite having a very strong need for varied information are simply too busy being VIPs to hobnob with tranny chasers, pedophile apologists and medicated Bronies like us. Besides, they read MetaFilter instead.

Actually I am sober right now.

I am much better when I am not.

I make more sense and can think on my feet.

Otherwise I am just a depressed fark who thinks it would be best to jump off a bridge
