Neither does the UN, since Assad ran low on toilet paper and had to use strongly written letters to wipe their asses.

Why would we pass up any possible chance to waste billions of dollars and kill off a bunch of our military in exchange for having another country that bitterly hates us forever?

Maybe there's a Best Before date on those cruise missiles?

And it's not as if there's any target in Afghanistan worth more than the price of a cruise missile. We'd be better off paying the Mujahedin to demolish their own mud huts and call it even.

So, an American president is flouting the UN to start a unilateral war against a Middle Eastern nation. At least this time it's a black Democrat in office, so I won't be called an anti-American terrorist lover for opposing this stupidity.

Nothing is impossible, but at this point it's looking more like "Clinton-style precision military strike" than "Bush-style full-scale invasion."

"it ain't broke" is literally the lease accurate way to describe a situation in which tens of thousands of people are being killed.

You can make the argument that we simply can't fix it but any argument based on the idea that things in Syria aren't broken is based on either ignorance or stupidity.

If we use cruise missiles there is no reason any of OUR people should die.

As long as we take out their air power first.

BullBearMS: Here's the big quoted for truth moment from TFA:

"But the second question ... is that of provenance. Where do they come from, and who authorized or directed they be used? And in my mind now, that now has become the crucial question in determining what action should be taken, if the global norm against any use of chemical weapons has been violated, which appears that it has. Who violated it, and who is responsible? And already we hear widespread arguments developing.

"Just a few moments before coming here, V.P. of the U.S. Joe Biden said he is completely satisfied that this was directed by the Assad government. ... I respect him, and he may well be satisfied, but I want to make this point to you. ... Him being completely satisfied is not the same as the evidence being made available to the world public.

"If it is the case that the evidence exists, (then) the U.S. and all people who are interested in this terrible problem need to have it demonstrated, not just stated, but demonstrated, that it is beyond doubt, incontrovertible that this was directed by the Syrian regime. And if that proves to be the case, then the whole issue of what action to be taken gets to be a whole lot clearer."

Wow.

That's surprisingly rational.

What this asshat doesn't understand is that publicly displaying your evidence ALSO tips off how you collect your evidence. What phones are tapped. Where your spies are. All that stuff.

It sounds nice to say "publish the evidence", but doing so risks that information source drying up or possible getting a covert operative killed.

But I am guessing he knows that and is just grinding his personal agenda like everyone else.

No. It's not.

Unfortunately for us, Bush and Chaney et. All burned our ability to play that card to the world and get taken with a straight face thanks to Iraq. The world really has a reason to distrust us, especially when it comes to military action in the Middle East because of this.

It's not unilateral if Britain, France, and the rest of NATO are involved. I'm not sure limited missile strikes are the same as "starting a war." I guarantee Syria won't declare war in response to it.

How about when it comes to using WMDs and potentially starting a WAR that the government lays its cards on the table ? If there are assets in harms way remove them and make your case. The UN inspectors are also there. I guess it would be too much trouble for the US to wait to see what they say. Which would also give cover to any assets in harms way unless their reports aren't going to say what the US wants.

These folks will not bare the burdens of their decisions. It will be the everyday Americans and military members who will have to deal with the repercussions of their actions.

unless the whole effing UN is behind it, the cruisers can just damned well sit there.  And frankly, this kind of grotesque abuse of a civillian population is exactly the kind of thing that the UN can agree on.

I don't need to be around when it turns out that our silly slap-fight with Assad allowed the rebels to take over Syria, since nobody seems to know who they are.  Inevitably some of them will be the worst kind of people and we will have brought them to power.  No endgame plan, no strikes.
