Paris1127: the bomb was dropped from a State Police helicopter

That's probably what convinced Philly they needed their own helicopters.  The stateies weren't going to fall for THAT one again.media.npr.org

Don't forget the tanks.  Maybe some anti-aircraft weapons too.  Maybe they can throw in some cutting edge crowd control technology too.

One of the funnier moments before I was banned from Democratic Underground, it was during the 20th anniversary of the Move bombing. There was a stark divide, everybody outside of the philly area was horrified about what happened, police state all that. Everybody from Philly was, they had what was coming to them.

Yeah, you can kill a lot of people with a forward looking infrared camera. One step away from invading Warsaw at this rate!

Boeing, which makes helicopters for the U.S. and foreign goverments at its Ridley Park plant, including the updated Chinook with a new cargo handling system that Boeing plans to demonstrate to Canadian officials at its Middletown, Del., testing facility Wednesday, does not bid for small jobs like Philadelphia's. "That's commercial. We're military," spokesman Thomas Marinucci reminded me.

A clear technical distinction that truly matters.

Because the police have nothing to do with the military.

Someone set us up the? But seriously, they wanted to destroy a rooftop bunker on MOVE HQ. They didn't count on the flammable materials up there.

Real crime fighting would be cruise missles drones flying the Broad Street subway lines getting punks who are mugging and killing passengers.

A new helicopter would cut into the overtime for the five-parade five-day police funerals which always involve the Catholic cathedral even for baptists and jews.

Cop haters remember this type of shiat.
Cop suckers forget about it.

Who's forgetting or denying it? Careful there, it's been a dry summer and the straw fields are easy to catch fire.

I think the point you left out is that rational people neither polarize themselves one way or another, but recognize that power has to be limited and oversight maintained. However, the use of a police helicopter is not the last step towards our conversion into Nazi Germany, nor are we anywhere close to a police state. The only people who claim that we are are those who enjoy hyperbole, or have no idea what a police state is.

Paris1127: /FWIW, the bomb was dropped from a State Police helicopter...

Yup.  The PPD only got their own helicopter about a decade ago.  I didn't even know they had two.

It's really not a big deal, except when they're using it in the middle of the night to try and track a suspect, which leads to the helicopter circling over one small area for an hour or more.  In my neighborhood that happens a couple times a year.

I find dismissing the increased control the police have over the populace by ridiculing anyone who says "police state" is a nice way of avoiding the real issue.

Just say "this isn't a police state, retard!" and you don't have to discuss the very real inroads that have been taken to take away liberties. It's a nice tactic.

And I find that people who claim that we live in a police state with all seriousness aren't interested in discussing real issues, or real solutions. As a rule to go this, I've also found that anyone who doesn't echobox their feelings on the matter 100% is one of "them", and collaborate and support any measure of brutality and stripping of civil liberties.

It's ironic how that mentality echos the very right-winged mentality they claim to hate.

In this country, not so much, even though local police forces are turning into para-military organizations (in most other countries there's a national police force which is a branch of the military and therefore much better trained than any cop in the USA).

But the real issue there is that a contract for a single helicopter is not big enough for Boeing Ridley Park to take on; they're used to building dozens of choppers for big military contracts.  Ridley Park is also a massive boondoggle, kept open only because out local Congressmen keep shoveling pork in its direction.  The Osprey project happened only to keep it running.

So you don't think you've ever acted irrational because someone disagreed with your blanket, vehement disdain for anyone who wears a badge, then?

I guess for someone who thinks posting gay porn is a legitimate adult argument on a debate website, you really wouldn't see that.

conform or die citizen.  Conform is easier  - did you take your Soma today?
Take your Soma, it's good for you-
"All the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects."
..there is always soma, delicious soma, half a gramme for a half-holiday, a gramme for a week-end, two grammes for a trip to the gorgeous East, three for a dark eternity on the moon..."
"you do look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma."
"Soma was served with the coffee. Lenina took two half-gramme tablets and Henry three."

(My emphasis)
I lived in a commune in 1970.  There I met some folks that called themselves Hippies but I didn't think so.  They were angry men suffering self relegation from positions of trust at Raytheon and other branches of the Military Industrial Complex.  They hated the war. They hated the police. Their Significant Others were cowed into silence (it seemed).  At that time I was incapable of understanding their depth of hate and it's reasons and then to call themselves Hippies made no sense to me.  I avoided them and has very little to do with them.  They were hard men.  Bitter doesn't go far enough to describe them.  Their skin was drawn tight over their bodies, they had bulging veins and long unkempt hair.  It seemed they walked around by mashing their feet into the earth.  They split kindling with the same fervor they'd split a 24" log.  They seemed to have one speed - furious, unrelenting hate.
I avoided and pitied them.
So they were the back side of the circle of right wing hate, meeting in the middle.

Fun fact: The original plan was to make the blue route 6 lanes all the way to 95 but the locals insisted it remain 4 lanes or it would increase traffic and pollution. PENDOT tried to explain away the stupid but it didn't happen.

Now the locals have to deal with crushing traffic jams and pollution.

If PENNDOT wanted to fix traffic, they'd make I-76 6 lanes instead of 4, and leave the Blue Route alone.
