Obama and MIT killed him to keep him spilling the beans on their massive NSA/FEMA program to make everyone think that Reddit is important.

I don't know if suicide really fits with this.

Col. Mustard in the kitchen with the revolver.

Or a couple of bruised egos at DOJ and MIT. Take your pick.

Seems like a waste of a really good, talented person to me.  Maybe he should have gone all Snowden on everyone, rather than draw so much attention to himself before he excaped to a safe place.

Yep. And there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. They are above the law and have zero accountability for their actions.

It probably had something to do with his depression and overwhelming inability to cope with getting caught doing something he knew was illegal and for which he knew the consequences.  Civil disobedience can be honorable.  Supporting this pussy is foolish.

Aaron Swartz killed himself.

I'm usually suspicious when an article claims a suicide was caused by a specific event or chain of events. Isn't long-term severe depression the biggest factor? THEN something comes along - for example a very stressful prosecution - the straw that breaks the camel's back.

So what killed this poor guy was mental illness.

Outrageous Muff: Obama and MIT killed him to keep him spilling the beans on their massive NSA/FEMA program to make everyone think that Reddit is important.

At 1k an hour some think the not dead other founder is important.

Reddit is censoring the recent wikileaks leak about Alexis Ohanian consulting with stratfor Intelligence Firm.

I've published all my emails with stratfor on my twitter account.

*edit: here's all the emails I've ever exchanged with Stratfor from our meeting to today in one place. (Spoiler: it's not many and not very interesting) As well as bonus material like the 2007 panel I was on at Booz Allen.

I have never been a consultant for Stratfor. I have never worked for Stratfor -- they invited me to their office during SXSW (in 2011, before the wikileaks revelations when I just knew them as a really good news wire service), I got a tour and they asked me for a quote to consult, so I gave it to them, but it went nowhere. We hadn't talked since.

At the time I thought they did great work reporting on the Caucasus (I was living in Armenia at the time) and after the wikileaks revelation I ended my subscription.

Yeah but if he had shot himself in the head it would have been the guns fault.

Dammit, I'm tired of articles that assume I know who the person being discussed is.

Is this the guy who died just before giving the talk on how people could hack pacemakers?

If that was the case we better look at his defense attorney as well, who fell just short of begging him to take the severely reduced penalty for openly performing B&E and computer/wire fraud.

The outrage isn't over the fact that he was facing a trial.  The outrage is over the fact that he's facing 50+ years for a crime that should warrant no more then a slap on the wrist.

Didn't he basically turn down the slap on the wrist? Also, while it's possible he could have faced 50+ years, what was the likelihood he was ever going to go down for that long?

He pirated academic papers and caused a massive pain in the arse for a university, it's not like he was emptying people's accounts or running a cp ring.

Suicide seems like somewhat of an overreaction and I'm not sure you can blame the prosecutor.

If it wasn't for Aaron Swartz tying up Federal prosecutors and the DOJ, they wouldhave been able to prosecute all of the banking scamsters who looted the economy in 2008. So, thanks a lot, Aaron.

The prosecutor should have never brought those level of charges against him.  This is what is wrong with the entire system.  And the academic papers he "stole" were funded by tax payer money in the first place.  It doesn't matter that he turned down a "slap on the wrist"  In a fair justice system the punishment is supposed to fit the crime.  The possibility should never even approach what it did no matter what he actually would have been sentenced too.

The other part of the outrage is that the federal government had him targeted,  They could have gone after anybody but they wanted to make an example out of him because  he was a main opponent of copyright laws.  The copyright industry pressured the federal government into ruing the life of a young man when the government is not supposed to be doing the bidding of major corporations.
