1) Sample blood from borrowed pandas
2) Clone pandas

Although a clause to borrow the pandas may state that cloning is not an option.
Anyone work at a zoo that has borrowed pandas?  Why aren't we cloning them?

2013-08-27 05:21:44 PM
I knew it because of the panda exhibit in California, when they first came to the zoo it was part of the story about them. And China can enforce it by not allowing any of their pandas out unless that policy is agreed to. They take panda conservation seriously so I haven't seen any org really biatch about it. They also approve all the names, which is why all pandas have Chinese names.

Except, Subby, the article doesn't say all pandas are owned by China.

The article says that China gave away Pandas until 1984 - everything afterwards was loaned out.

If any of those pandas pre-84 are still alive or somehow procreated.... then NO, China doesn't own all Pandas.

Well?

Well.. looks like pandas in captivity have a 35 year lifespan.. so, it's possible those ones are still alive if they were really young when they were given away...

Not actually bears... they are marsupial.. so the taste would presu, ably be closer to Opposum.

Closest relative, oddly, is the Andean spectacled bear which is classified as "vulnerable".  I don't get why there isn't a cloning program (unless there is one and I'm just not aware of it).  It would be a shame for these magnificent animals to become extinct.

They are alsovegetarian, so probably not too bad.

Well, giant pandas follow a vegetarian diet. But, they're carnivores. And they don't like sex much.

They're an evolutionary dead-end, yet eco-mentalists champion their cause, citing them as an example of a species that must be saved... by renting living examples from China, apparently.

And God help you if a panda should die while in your care.

Well, they've got a point...we shouldn't let any species go extinct until we learn how to bring it back again, if necessary.  Could have useful proteins, etc, that we haven't discovered yet, or figured out how to synthesize.

Case in point:  the horseshoe crab was always considered pretty useless...until they discovered limulin.
Now the local fishery is a profitable, productive industry, employing people and making a useful product.

So, stop being short-sighted.

Fun fact: Giant Pandas' closest relative is the 1967 Plymouth Satellite Station Wagon.

Also, they are more closely related to granite than to Red Pandas.
