The stupid sound effect is a distraction from the bigger problem with Ingraham's analysis; as the article points out, she argues that the liberals are trying "to co-opt the legacy of Martin Luther King into a liberal agenda," as if the civil rights movement was supported by conservatives in the 60s.

As TFA shows in the link in about the Socialists Who Made the March on Washington, it was organized by A. Philip Randolph, a former Communist and a member of the Socialist Party at the time, and Bayard Rustin, who was also a Socialist and a gay rights activist.  Martin Luther King, Jr. was constantly accused of being a Communist, because some of his advisors were former Communists (see Jesse Helms' testimony in the 80s when Congress was debating the King Holiday).

http://www.martinlutherking.org/articles.html

Communists were involved in the civil rights movement from the very beginning.

It was an example of epic trolling on a global scale; the Soviets supported the civil rights movement because it highlighted a huge flaw in America's image as a beacon of freedom and democracy.  How could the United States claim to be the good guys when they were allowing segregation in the South?  Even Eisenhower worried about America's image on the global stage, and he intervened in Arkansas because he worried that "LittleRock would feed Soviet propaganda mills."

http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112365/why-republicans-are-party -wh ite-people

If the Southerners were smart, they would've seen that they were being baited; instead, they doubled down on segregation, arguing that integration would lead to a Communist takeover of America.  By digging their heals in on segregation, the South unwittingly proved the point the Soviets were trying to make.

The hardcore right-wingers that took over the Republican Party (Goldwater, Buckley, Helms, Richard Weaver, etc.) also bit hard on the hook and tried to make integration synonymous with Communist tyranny.

Conservatives have two choices:  they can try to claim that they supported the civil rights movement in the past (and were thus in league with the Communists and Socialists who also supported it-and hey, isn't that what they've claimed about the Democrats for so many years?), or they can admit that they fought against it as part of their vigilance against Communism.

That's one of my all time favorite Colbert interviews. I love the look one Laura's face when she realizes he's trapped her in her own stupid logic and then tries desperately to steer the conversation to something else to no avail.

It would still be a goddamn stupid move. The basic rule of politeness is not to do things that, to most people, look like you being a dick. Cutting off a civil rights leader with a gunshot? Yeah, that makes you look like a dick to most people.

I feel like she does a kind of ventriloquism with her nose and mouth, in that when her mouth is moving, the nose is actually where all the noise is coming from. That's why her voice sounds like a perpetual nasal whine.

And this is a broadcaster picked by people who claim to believe in "American exceptionalism?" I didn't know home schools had broadcasting courses.

I'm glad Schultz apologized for calling Ingraham a slut.  That was uncalled for, unfair, and insulting.  Sluts are awesome.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman apologized to one of the nation's largest black civil rights groups Thursday, saying Republicans had not done enough to court blacks in the past and had exploited racial strife to court white voters, particularly in the South.

"Some Republicans gave up on winning the African-American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization," Mehlman said at the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."

Mehlman's apology to the NAACP at the group's convention in Milwaukee marked the first time a top Republican Party leader has denounced the so-called Southern Strategy employed by Richard Nixon and other Republicans to peel away white voters in what was then the heavily Democratic South. Beginning in the mid-1960s, Republicans encouraged disaffected Southern white voters to vote Republican by blaming pro-civil rights Democrats for racial unrest and other racial problems.

 http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-07-14-GOP-rac ial-politics_x.htm

From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don't need any more than that...but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy

A report titled "Dividing the Democrats" outlines a plan for "spreading out into the ghettos of the country" to convince black Americans to run as Democrats and turn white voters against the Democratic Party.

The six-page paper was found in the files of Nixon aide H.R. Haldeman and is believed to have been written by Pat Buchanan. It urges Republicans to get a black candidate on the opposition ticket. "We should do what is within our power to have a black nominated for Number Two at least at the Democratic National Convention."

Newt's probably talking about classical liberalism. Not the Post-Modern Liberalism of today's democrat and Socialist parties.

As for the other quotes, who cares if the Republicans didn't "court" votes from blacks?
