(Boing Boing)   CNN editor forced to deny Onion story which claims she thought Miley Cyrus was more important than escalating civil war in Syria, grinding unrest in Egypt or Martin Luther's 'I have a dream' anniversary. Fark: Doesn't deny it   (boingboing.net) divider line 71

I think what everyone should take from this story is that we should be shooting things @ Cyrus not Syria.

Steven_M_TX: I don't remember from my history classes that Martin Luther gave an "I have a dream" speech.  I know that Martin Luther King delivered such a speech.  Martin Luther, I know, was a German priest that had a beef about the Catholic Church's practices in the 16th Century, summed it up in 95 theses, and nailed them onto a church door.  Martin Luther then started his own church, which he named the Lutheran Church.  Such a brilliant name for his church.

People today, especially the younger people, care more about Miley Cyrus than some 16th Century guy who started his own church.

Martin Luther King did it and let his son take the credit and bullet?

blockhouse: I'm still baffled by the core concept. Why does MTV put on the Video Music Awards when they haven't shown a music video in 15 years?

This! I mean, when I think of music videos nowadays, I think of You Tube, or the band's own website. The last place I would look for music videos is MTV. Which is sad, since back in the day, MTV was often on in the background because they showed nothing but videos.

Best thing I've seen in  The Onion in a decade. It was brutal and honest.

Profedius: xaldin: I'd be inclined to say that it is more important than Syria or Egypt. One is a civil war, other a near civil war and neither I particularly view as our problem. Today's weather ranks higher.

There is just the little problem with the Suez Canal. Should a civil war in Egypt affect shipping through the Suez Canal the price of goods and fuel will raise by a good deal. Syria has oil pipelines that travel through it which even though we do not receive our oil from them the global price of oil would be affected. I would say Miley Cyrus is more interesting, but hardly more important.

We can destroy anything and everything that tries to stop the Suez canal in a matter of minutes.  This will not change if one or two or three Middle Eastern countries decide to have civil wars.  It would take a deliberate coalition of local countries and/or Russia or China to stop it, and that only because we would fear retaliation.

If we're really worried about that, we have a few fleets we're not using.  It's ground transportation that poses the threat to oil supplies.

No, that was Martin Luther King, Jr.

Why anyone would give a damn about a whore in her underwear is beyond me. Giving it precedence over something that will affect the price of oil is retarded.

Yeah, I kinda got the feeling there was anger behind it, and that was as funny as they could manage through the rage.

Or, you know, people suffering and dying en masse, but tomato tohmahto...

We have the means to destroy anything that would block the Suez Canal, but exercising that ability could prove difficult depending on how the other nations align themselves. It would also be difficult to maintain secure passage through the canal before and after such a strike. You have to consider land based anti-ship missiles which can be small and mobile and raids against ships passing through the canal. There could also be a mining of the canal which would create a problem.

When more Americans vote for the fat chick on American Idol than they vote for the US President, Its usually a good sign that entertainment news ranks higher than boring world politics or some dude who died before most readers were born

Unless I am mistaken, and I do not know much about "American Idol," people can vote a number of times, unlike presidential elections, where people can vote on,y once. Except in New Orleans. Or Chicago.

You are correct, there is not a limit to the number of times you can vote.

Most certainly this is true when one doesn't bother to verify the ID of the voter.

Nutsac_Jim: How about telling russia to fix it if they dont want to lose part of their sphere of influence.

Because when Russia and China tell us to stay out of something it is the international Illuminati code for the US to get involved in another countries civil war and depose it's dictator.  Trust me, If there was a big oil reserve under Syria, we would already have boots on the ground.
