Or Detroit.  I'm surprised it actually took so long for this to happen.

So much for that attempt, however pathetic, at rodent control.

HAHAHA it's funny cause you're seriously saying this in Detroit.

as much as i think its a dick move to just shoot the thing... if you own something that some armed and very stupid farknut could mistake for a cheetah*... you should at least have the damn cat chipped.  you should know where it is, and if it gets loose on the streets of detroit, you should probably expect it to get shot.  solutions may be to not live in detroit, or not own animals you cant protect from detroit.

Here and there.  Decades ago, they switched to a "required" can that is designed to be lifted by a garbage truck operated by one guy who never leaves the cab.

In other words, a rare money-saving measure.

2013-08-27 12:21:14 PM
I like cats.  They typically shouldn't be shot in the street.  At the same time, the person who did this was probably thinking "holy crap, that thing could eat my kid".

I really hate it when people make public statements about "the ignorant citizenry" without even considering viewpoints outside their own agendas; I'm guessing it was something more along the lines of "holy shiat there's a farkin' cheetah on the front lawn!" than "hmm, that doesn't look like an ordinary house cat, better ventilate it just to be sure".

Big farking deal. How is this uniquely Detroit?

Feral cats and dogs exist in any urban area.  In LA where I live, we also get coyote sightings even in the very urbanized parts of the county and warnings are issued to the public.  Those are very dangerous.

You expect the average Detroit resident to not only be aware of the value of an animal like this, but be capable of setting a working trap for it?

2013-08-27 12:27:57 PM
I live in a municipality that isn't bankrupt, so I would call animal control, but if I didn't, I don't think I'd feel the need to follow up on every local missing kitty story before taking action about something terrifying hanging out near my house.

This-

Sad story.

Even more than the chip. It was on the news. Why didn't they call the station and say, "you know, my cat escaped. And he is very cheetah shaped. I would like to offer an award."

If they did that and offer a modest reward. They would have had their cat back.

But I don't blame the shooter or Detroit. A real feral cat is a pest. A large cat like that could grab smaller pets.

This.

And also the point that the thing was reported to the police and the humane society but they didn't bother to look into it and let it roam free for over a month. Put me in that situation with the authorities not doing anything about it, and then if I'm taking out the garbage one night and I run across it, or my kid or wife does and it hisses or makes a aggressive move at us, yeah I'm going to be on guard and be looking to get rid of it next time I see it.

I've considered that viewpoint...and it's ignorant. It's a cat. Teach your kids to stay away from stray animals...it's not like the thing is out hunting toddlers. Leave it alone until it's caught and returned to it's owner. This "kill it, because of the children!" mentality is ridiculous and without credence in this situation.
