Yes hook line and sinker.....

Lee calls the Galaxy Gear a "wearable concept device," which raises the question: will Samsung sell its smartwatch to the mass market? Lee adds that Samsung is "confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry," implying the device is just an early exploration of a potential market, rather than one aimed at mainstream adoption.

eh, i have a pebble watch and have gotten value out of it. if it were allowed tighter integration into iOS it would be a great device.  and as for samsung, if they are going to continue pushing the boundaries of good taste in phone size, they would be very well advised to work on a way to allow for micro-moments to be done without taking the phone out.

The calculator watch OF THE FUTURE.

Anyway, I still wear a watch, but I see very, very few kiddies wearing one anymore.

I think a smart watch would be pretty neat. Might actually get me to start wearing a watch again.  In fact, all it really needs to be is a mini display for my smart phone.  Connect via bluetooth, show me text messages, alerts, email, caller ID, etc.  Maybe throw in media controls.  Obviously a watch face but also maybe a weather infoglyph.

Basically, I want something that allows me to leave my phone in my pocket most of the time.

Its not a shiatty idea

I like to exercise. What something like this would mean is that I could have a viable way to change my music while I am running/walking. Bluetooth earplugs + iWatch + iPhone = awesome

Plus, they could put a camera in that thing. Imagine, making FaceTime phone calls from your watch! That would be epic

They still manufacture and sell these:

And these were popular prior to the nerd uprising. This will be another device that people will wear and defend wearing, despite having little to no use for it.

Lando Lincoln: I think a Smart Watch might be kinda cool.

I get the feeling they tried to develop it themselves first and game into design issues, trolled Samsung in hopes they could either get over those issues themselves enabling Apple to steal the idea OR that Samsung would fail too and either way Apple comes out on top.

Given that iPhones/iPads/iPod Touches were inspired by Star Trek's PADD I could see Apple trying to develop a wrist-mounted mini-computer-communications device like they wore on The Motion Picture/kind of like the TNG/DS9/Voyager commbadges.

If I had a communicator pin that did that stuff (locate, communicate, send homing signal... all of which is certainly do-able), and was affordable, I'd get them for my library.

I have been thinking it through, and I think I am in agreement with this.

Google Glass looks cool as fark, but it also has many issues with people knowing that you are wearing it thinking they are recording you. At least with a SmartWatch that paranoia won't be as bad

Paranoia nothing. I think the utility of having a popup window on the edge of your visual field is pretty much non-existent. While I can see limited uses for an AR HUD, I don't think it's nearly as useful as people think it will be. Our visual field is already jam packed with useful information. Adding more isn't going to help us out much. Also, technology should involve modal interactions- I should  take action to use a piece of technology. Our brains work very well when we have a context switch. Trying to reduce that context switch is going to be uncomfortable and unpleasant, and I don't think it will see much market success.

In any case, Google Glass isn't an AR HUD. It's a tool for dickbags that are so self important that they can't stand the thought of not checking every notification that comes in on their phone when it happens.

But it's not a pin, dammit. And not everyone in the library has a smart phone.  And I don't allow cell phones, ipods, or other personal electronics on the service desks.

I'd also like it to authenticate wirelessly with our swipe card readers so only pin wearers can enter staff doors.  And be a cool but simple design.

A girl can dream.

I have seen bluetooth pins. A bluetooth pin + smartphone (with NFC) does everything you're asking for. Now, I know a library won't have the budget to give their employees smartphones, because well- libraries don't get budgets, they get whatever is in the couch.

I'd wager the reason Apple hasn't done it yet is that they haven't figured out what the watch would be except a bluetooth remote for a phone. Same reason why an Apple branded television has never happened -- how exactly would it be different than a TV connected to an Apple TV box.

I wore something like this as a kid in the 80s and let me tell you...b*tches LOVED it! I'd strut in the room and you could almost hear the ladies slipping out of their Jordache jeans.

These days I wear a decent analog watch because I think it's a masculine and tasteful accouterment, and also because I hate digging for my phone just to see what time it is.
