Is Andy van Slyke back?

Awesome. Maybe we can have a repeat of Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS complete with Andy van Slyke sitting down in centr field in disbelief that Barry Bonds couldn't get a throw to the plate ahead of Sid Bream.

Especially after Van Slyke told Bonds to play in the exact spot where the ball was hit and Bonds decided to flip him off rather than move.

And oddly, the day the Pirates make that announcement, they fall out of first place and half a game behind the Cardinals.  They shouldn't have put the tickets on sale until at least several hours before their first playoff game - just to be on the safe side.

Still 32 to play, which is more than enough for them to blow it. Still would like to see the Bucs in the post-season, though.

This!!!! Although the Pirates won't win the division, they will still make the playoffs. They need to pay attention to the Reds and figure out how to beat them in the one-game wildcard playoff. Study it out.

Of source, in the event of an actual playoff game, those would sell out so fast that the price is irrelevant. They could charge $1000 for the worst seats and they'd still sell out

Yeah, while not in first, they're still 9 or 10 games above "missing the playoffs" due to the wild card. Not to mention, two of the Bucs next four series are against the Cards -- we'll know who is in first and who is in the wild card after that. A half-game is irrelevant right now.

More importantly... and most importantly... they're still 22 games above 0.500

As a Dodger fan, it pains me to praise the Gigantes. It really does. But the core of the rotation that won it all last year is still in tact. When you can throw Vogelsong, Cain (whats up with him this year?), Baumgarner, and Lincecum in a 4 game series, I like a teams chances. The Pirates should be happy to come out of a series like that (on the road) with a split.

I know, but he still pitches like The Freak from time to time. He did take a gigantic nosedive though. FFS, he is worse than Chris Capuano this year.

Seriously though, he really fell off a cliff. Way above average SP to below replacement level in a couple of years is kind of sad.

Back in the day Pittsburgh was as much of a baseball town as Cincinnati and St.Louis.

The difference was when they started going in the tank we had the Steelers and Penguins to fall back on.

Meanwhile Cincy and St. Louie had the Bengals, Cardinals, Rams, and Blues.

Of course they are baseball towns.

What I've enjoyed seeing over the last few years is that the baseball fans in Pittsburgh are just waiting to come out of the woodwork as soon as the team performs to expectations.  They've been there all along, but just won't pay money to see the games until there's a decent product.

Anyway, while I'm a Cubs fan, I usually pick a second team to root for once the Cubs are out of it (which happens way too often, and looks to last until about 2017-2018 by my guess), and in recent years I've picked the Pirates to root for.  Young, rebuilding team ready to reinvest in keeping players and contend.  Good for them.

IIRC, it was all the trades between the Cubs and Pirates when the Cubs were in buying player mode that has the Pirates where they are now.  We used to refer to the Pirates as the Cubs Triple AAA farm club.

It would make sense you would have an affinity for the Pirates since they are where the Cubs should be if the Cubs had a decent front office back in the day

Yeah, Hendry was awful about overspending on contracts, but he had someone on the inside in the Pirates' organization.  He looked like a friggin wizard in 2003 when he landed Ramirez and Lofton.

Cubs will get there.  They've finally modernized an office that has been stuck in the 50s, they have cutting-edge business minds in charge, and have stockpiled more young talent than I thought they'd be able to in a couple years.
