(TreeHugger)   I know this is going to shock you, but it when it comes to reporting on fact versus reporting on an outlandish, unproven, over-hyped story, it appears the mainstream media got it wrong   (treehugger.com) divider line 20

So they included the manufacturing process of the iPhone in its energy use, but not the manufacturing process of the refrigerator.

I need an extra fusebox for the fridge, because I stand in front of it with the doors open, "reading" the refrigerator.

Low Budget Dave: I need an extra fusebox for the fridge, because I stand in front of it with the doors open, "reading" the refrigerator.

Leave the door open and the fridge becomes a heater.

Well there is ongoing infrastructure that supports smart phones in terms of billing, customer support centers, networking infrastructure, software development and updating. All of which need electricity to exist where as the refrigerator is purely a standalone device in your home.

That being said I have no idea what that adds up to. The link in the original article was broken.

I have bad news for all you conservatives out there - it's not liberal bias in the media, it's sheer incompetence.

Exactly. And both sides, pro and con, seem to ignore the actual content. A modern Dell blade uses about 450 watts of power or close to 4,000 kwh per year alone. A modern refrigerator uses about 550 kwh in that same time frame. If only a small handful of people accessed videos on that machine, they would each use more electricity than a refrigerator in server power alone. It's unlikely and most content delivery is designed so that doesn't happen, but I know from professional experience that it does.

So...that app I bought and downloaded that was supposed to keep my beer cold when I set my iPhone on it may in fact be bogus???

Knowing how frequently The Meedja misunderstands/misinterprets/misreports/flat-out farks up the results of biological/medical studies, this story comes as no surprise whatsoever. Reporters act like they know WTF they're talking about. Usually, they do not. And this is not limited to any particular network or outlet, this is generally true across the entire profession.

I heard that George Zimmerman murdered a child.

No, the bias is there too (and it always will be, it's inherent in the nature of journalism).  But there is also a lot of incompetence.  Of course the fact that we are no longer willing to pay for journalism might have something to do with it.
