Satanic_Hamster: Calling it:
Massive waves of air strikes, followed by Turkey rolling in from the west/NW and the Foreign Legion dropping into Damascus.

I don't think Turkey will do much unless it's a joint NATO operation. Russia is one of Turkey's largest, if not the largest (I've seen differing numbers) trading partner and relies on Russia for over half their energy needs. The Russians will squeeze on Turkey if they act unilaterally.

Turkey, Britain and France all indicated on Monday that they would back the Obama administration if it decides to take action against Syria in response to the alleged attack, even without a United Nations mandate.

Yea. Right.

I've got an idea... how about this: We (the Obama administration) say that we will back Turkey, Britain and France if they decide to take action against Syria in response to the alleged attack, even without a United Nations mandate.

CowboyUpCowgirlDown: The Russians are strategic thinkers:  they won't go all Kim Jong Il just because we launch a couple dozen cruise missiles into Syria's command and control bunkers.  If we nuked Assad's last known location, they might lob one of their own into Georgia (Tbilisi, not Atlanta), just because they could get away with it under the "you did it first" doctrine.

You must be very good at Risk

How? Do you think a random small-ish country like Uruguay is going to be ok with "donating" its soldiers to an actual armed conflict in a different continent?

I agree the UN is small, donated, and without any real military power...then I think they are without polital power too!!

Sorry,  the US credit cards are maxed out right now.    Hit us up next time.

We've already had a few at bats.... time for the EU or countries near Syria to step up to the plate.

Let them go in debt, in an effort try and stabilize the region.

"The U.S. will hit the $16.7 trillion debt ceiling in mid-October, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a letter urging Congress to raise the limit "as soon as possible...

... At that point, the United States will have reached the limit of its borrowing authority, and Treasury would be left to fund the government with only the cash we have on hand on any given day," he said. The cash balance at that time is forecast to be about $50 billion, "insufficient to cover net expenditures for an extended period of time," according to Lew.
The Treasury Department had earlier said it probably will be able to finance government operations by using special accounting measures until after Congress returns Sept. 9 from its recess. Lew said Aug. 22 a failure by Congress to raise the debt limit would "have disastrous effects for our nation"

Syria can be handled by the EU and UN,  and acronyms other than US this time around.

Thanks to Bush/Cheney and their little "hunt down the people who did this" oil war in Iraq, the Chinese National Petroleum Company is now running the largest oil field in Iraq.

I can hardly wait for the blowback from the attacks in Syria that hit Russian or Chinese assets. Wheeeeee!!1!

I'm off to buy oil stocks (particularly BP) and contractor stocks. The rich are going to get richer. Again.

Oh and one more thing...DO NOT VOLUNTEER....REPEAT....DO NOT VOLUNTEER. If the Republican NeoCons get a hold of the White House you will be volunteering for another 10 year resource war, doing 15 month combat tours with no time off.  You will volunteer with the best of intentions and highest of principles and end up serving a civilian leadership whose only intentions are making big profits off the backs of volunteers.

America needs it's own foreign legion, similar to the French, but uniquely American. That way, when this shiat happens, that doesn't really matter to America, we can send the criminals and the fools to die for nothing, instead of the real military.

I used to think so, too -- but it could be used against the American people much easier than the regulars.

Lets let France use their foreign legion since we don't have one.

Again, why in the king fark would Assad use chemical weapons 2 days after a UN chemical weapons inspection team arrives?

The answer to that must be as bizarre as the answer to the question: Why did we invade Iraq after 9/11 when Iraq had no role in 9/11?

Bonus: UN chemical inspectors have accused the rebels of using sarin before this.

Soooo... as others have pointed out, the US (and most of the world) is teetering on the brink of a big ole recession/depression/financial collapse (that is why we pumped so much stimulus over the past 4 years with no recovery).  So gee.. we can either have a true collapse accompanied with a transfer of power OR the existing power structures can keep trying to stay in power.

The problem is an isolated war in Syria means nothing to this problem.  It MUST become a full-out world war, maybe even with some nukes.  Why?  Well, that will keep existing powers in power, and ensure the next economies will have some work to do (rebuilding).

The problem here is it will only be ANOTHER delay of the existent inevitable.  More and more people see through it this time, which I fear means the existing power structure will find the need to restore to more drastic measures.  No thank you...

TLAM's are almost 3x that nowadays. That price is 15 years old and they don't have the modernized guidance systems that were added to allow them to "Hang around" a target to wait for the right time to strike. There may be some older ones still in inventory somewhere but those are more than likely sitting in a weapons depot somewhere and not on front line ships. You put the best out to sea first.
