With what? They have no army, they just give out the Blue Hat of Just Cause to real states with real armies stepping up. The big value of the UN is it makes it much less likely countries will go to war accidently by providing clear communication of who is officially saying what and a hint of how big a pile of shiat attacking X country may end up snowballing into.

For example, right now Russia is acting butthurt, but there is no lining up of real military assets on Assad's side. He's as in season  and alone as Quadfi was...

That would be a neat trick for Turkey, considering Syria's western border is the Mediterranean Sea. The usual route invading South from Turkey is Aleppo, Homs, Damascus. You could have somebody come in from the sea at Tripoli, if you were gonna go all ground troop invasion, but I doubt that's going to happen. I wouldn't expect any NATO boots on ground (other than special forces) before Assad quits or loses. Then you'd have blue helmets.

I don't think Turkey will do much unless it's a joint NATO operation. Russia is one of Turkey's largest, if not the largest (I've seen differing numbers) trading partner and relies on Russia for over half their energy needs. The Russians will squeeze on Turkey if they act unilaterally.

"The U.S. will hit the $16.7 trillion debt ceiling in mid-October, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a letter urging Congress to raise the limit "as soon as possible...

... At that point, the United States will have reached the limit of its borrowing authority, and Treasury would be left to fund the government with only the cash we have on hand on any given day," he said. The cash balance at that time is forecast to be about $50 billion, "insufficient to cover net expenditures for an extended period of time," according to Lew.
The Treasury Department had earlier said it probably will be able to finance government operations by using special accounting measures until after Congress returns Sept. 9 from its recess. Lew said Aug. 22 a failure by Congress to raise the debt limit would "have disastrous effects for our nation"

Oh and one more thing...DO NOT VOLUNTEER....REPEAT....DO NOT VOLUNTEER. If the Republican NeoCons get a hold of the White House you will be volunteering for another 10 year resource war, doing 15 month combat tours with no time off.  You will volunteer with the best of intentions and highest of principles and end up serving a civilian leadership whose only intentions are making big profits off the backs of volunteers.

Soooo... as others have pointed out, the US (and most of the world) is teetering on the brink of a big ole recession/depression/financial collapse (that is why we pumped so much stimulus over the past 4 years with no recovery).  So gee.. we can either have a true collapse accompanied with a transfer of power OR the existing power structures can keep trying to stay in power.

The problem is an isolated war in Syria means nothing to this problem.  It MUST become a full-out world war, maybe even with some nukes.  Why?  Well, that will keep existing powers in power, and ensure the next economies will have some work to do (rebuilding).

The problem here is it will only be ANOTHER delay of the existent inevitable.  More and more people see through it this time, which I fear means the existing power structure will find the need to restore to more drastic measures.  No thank you...

netcentric: TLAMS are $500,000 each.    And we need a bunch of those just to open the party.

...then it starts getting expensive

TLAM's are almost 3x that nowadays. That price is 15 years old and they don't have the modernized guidance systems that were added to allow them to "Hang around" a target to wait for the right time to strike. There may be some older ones still in inventory somewhere but those are more than likely sitting in a weapons depot somewhere and not on front line ships. You put the best out to sea first.

ASSad is a murderous tyrant but as bad as he is, folks like him are just a small handful of folks left that stands in the way of total Sunni/Wahabism domination of the ME. THAT is NOT a good thing.

Is that SUPPOSED to be the "rocket" that delivered the poison gas?

Because it looks like something that some 14 year-old Palestinian kids would have cobbled together to fire at Israel.

You know, the kind that typically blows up a couple of square yards of dirt in some remote Israeli field, causing "mass casualties" in the form of panic and asthma attacks.

But in all seriousness are you suggesting we just bend over because the world's largest third world country is tossing around even more passive aggressive shiat? And furthermore that we should just sit by as men women and children are attacked with neurotoxin? I don't care if you sympathize with their side or not aside from the obvious moral difficulty of allowing a thing like that to happen to anyone, it is also in clear contravention of the Geneva convention are we supposed to just let that slide? I didn't support Iraq it was bullshiat and anyone with half a brain knew it but this shiat is really happening right now. So take your cynical smart ass shiat and blow it out your ass. Russia still has nukes and methods to deliver them in a short amount of time, some of those methods are completely untouchable before launch. You really should pay more attention to the state of things before you type. The Cold War is over but the weapons are still out there.

2013-08-27 12:56:58 AM
I don't think we're going to get involved, and I don't think we should either. Russia knows we shouldn't, and the administration knows we shouldn't. Russia is just using this as an opportunity to make Obama look weak. And he'll just have to take it on the chin, because we're not in the position to go warring.

At least this is my opinion. Granted I don't know very much on this subject.

Begun, the Muslim Thirty Years' War has.

There's battle lines being drawn, and nobody's right if everybody's wrong.

A plague o' both their houses.

Both sides hate our guts.  Syria is not worth a single hair on an American soldier's head.  Ditto Egypt.  Let them go on killing each other until they get it through their heads that maybe just leaving each other alone might work better.

And if they want Sharia law, let them have it in spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds.  Let them stew in it until they get it through their heads that it is not the utopia that the Qur'an thumpers promised.
