I guess we could test subby's claim if there were actually any progress under Obama.

One reason for the rise in diagnosis and (over) treatment of mental problems is that the treatments are mostly paid for with other people's money. Doctors a happy to take health insurance money to prescribe drugs even if they don't help and parents with retarded problem children really like to get them classified as autistic because that makes them eligible for treatment (babysitting) programs.

I'm not saying that some people don't need and benefit from treatment, but just that the current economic incentives lead to over diagnosis of those who will be paid for while ignoring groups such as the uninsured.

Belief in progress isn't the problem.

The understanding the progressthat is  perfectly achievable is being held back by a distinct minority of hyper-sensitive, ignorant yokels who scream and yowl at anything their imaginary sky-wizard might get imaginary mad at, who think any way but their way is the wrong way, is the problem.

And the depressing thing is that's the way it always is and always will be. Although you can go back, hundreds even thousands of years and read the progressives of the time (Marcus Aurelius etc.) and realize, you aren't alone in how you feel. And although it may seem completely useless thinking the way you think, someone who is progressive adds something to humanity that stays with it forever. Although there are a lot more losses than wins, in the end progress always ends.

/now if you'll excuse me I need to numb the existential pain with alcohol

Actually, progress makes the ultra-conservative throwbacks in the countryside depressed. Sociological fact, they go all crazy and start screaming whenever you invent something new like daycare or racial integration.

I am personally happy about progress: I can check the weather on my cellphone when I'm hiking, I no longer have to rely on the radio to find new music that I like, porn is free and plentiful, lesbians are now attractive, and I can trade junior mining stocks while writing about gold-backed currency on a blog - and people read it.

The future looks bright - I bet I can become a space pirate.

LOL  And YET, that is EXACTLY what you're biatching about..."those who think any way but YOUR way are the problem."

How is your sky-wizard in the white house helping YOU out?

Suckmaster Burstingfoam:  they Liberalgo all crazy and start screaming whenever you invent something new like daycare or racial integration or free speech or economic realities or lower taxes or vouchers for education or personal liberty and responsibility.

Fixed that for you.  You're welcome.

Whoa whoa whoa there, chap.  Ease down.  Fark is where trolls perfect their art, but that also means the crowd's a wee bit savvier than your typical YouTube twits.  If you're trying to catch a fish, a hook & line works better than a sledgehammer.

Maybe because there really is no progress?  Maybe because for all the new toys humans are really just the same good/evil mix they've always been?
