I would have thought thtat that's something they'd learn first in skydiving school, but since I've never been I cannot say.

Tragic? Hardly. When you throw yourself out of an airplane at 12,000 feet, don't expect me to say it's a tragedy if you die. Horrifying, scary, messy, yes, but tragic? No. And obviously he overlook something quite important for him to fall out of his harness, that just doesn't happen.

Misrouted chest strap or a poorly fitted harness, combined with complacency.  He's the only one who will ever know, and he ain't talking.

I've been three times and each time it takes me an hour to get my balls back on the outside, those crotch harnesses are cinched tight.  Either the crotch harness or chest strap wasn't in place.
Like I said, I have 3 static line jumps in my log book.  This makes me an expert.

Right, but you're supposed to be looking at everyone else's equipment when you take the ride up to the sky. I mean, of course, everyone is responsible for their own gear when they make the final decision to/not to leave the plane but the whole, "check your neighbors" doctrine is supposed to catch moments of being lax.

I've only jumped twice, both times tandem, so I don't know single-person jump gear at all. But I would be very, very surprised to learn that a single slip led to this.

It happens when you get cocky, and think it's unnessesary to check your gear before jumping out of a perfectly good plane.

Because everyone in that video was... even the news anchor.

I mean, that could be a contributing factor to falling out of your harness, couldn't it?

Living in Yolo county I can absolutely say yes.  Lots of farmer/rancher wives.  As for the news anchors, well, Fox 40 IS a UHF station.

Ultra Heavy Female station.

References to VHF and UHF stations are rare these days.

I have only two jumps, but I'd go every week if I could afford it.

All those straps and buckles. I think you'd appreciate the joke I made to my tandem instructor on my last jump.

This just brings to mind my old SDI in basic training way back in 1967.  Msgt Mosley said, "Only two things come out of the sky, bird shiat and fools.".

Oldiron_79: Skydiving: commiting suicide while wearing a backpack.

I guess I failed at suicide twice now.

Nothing in the eyewitness testimony makes sense. I cant make heads or tails out of that sentence. Fell out of his harness? What did that have to do with the reserve shoot?

And as a prememptive strike to the couple of jackasses in every sky dive thread who say people deserve what they get, you have a better chance of being killed driving to the jump zone than you do sky diving. Now when you start doing a lot of stunts and extreme type of dives, that changes.

2013-08-26 04:15:19 PM
I know jernalism is hard,  but why do so many jernalist insist on quoting verbatim when the quote makes little sense?

"As I was in the landing area, I did witness, he fell out of the harness and, we don't know how, but he fell out of his harness and saw the canopy flying towards that direction and there was no reserve opening," said Hawkins.

2013-08-26 04:15:49 PM
You need to put the ends of the straps back through the buckles.
You don't do that, this is what happens.

/I did it once rappeling, but I was close enough to the ground that I could lower myself quickly to the ground before the straps reached their ends and I fell out.
//Have skydived too and always checked that the straps were back through the buckles.
