The performances lately don't see so much hypersexualised as random and spastic.

It's the kind of thing a drug addled Pinkie Pie would come up with.

WippitGuud: WippitGuud: milkyshirt: Well I just watched that performance and it is a mess, but I have to admit for some reason I find her attractive. I think it all started the first time I saw that pic of her from behind on all fours. Does anyone have it handy? No, I can't find it and post it myself.

Sigh...

Hmm... Fark ate the picture.

Oh good, just "sigh" made me feel a little ashamed.

/Don't judge me for wanting to nuzzle her butt.

That is not twerking. Miley Cyrus cannot twerk. She can try. She can replicate the motion. But the fact is, she does not have enough booty to successfully twerk. I whole-heartedly support her efforts, but lets be honest here.

Slim, white girls are prone to a genetic disorder called "flat-butt". This condition is widespread and precludes proper twerking. I say this not to discourage such ladies from co-opting and making use of the motion. I encourage such women (or "tops" of any kind) to practice and perfect the aforementioned activity. Put your heart (and your back) into it and your efforts will be much appreciated.

For men seeking a true twerking experience, I recommend finding a "successful and attractive" partner.

World stunned by girl in underwear at MTV Video Music Awards

"Reaction was swift, as other, slightly older adults paused from maintaining their social standings and making potato salad for the church picnic to express dismay that a young female pop star would do something so scandalous for attention, on a show where young female pop stars have historically done something scandalous for attention."

I hope years and years into the future people are still posting that picture in response to other people's posts and they don't even know why they're doing it, it's just the appropriate response.

VMAs always do something to grab a headline.  From Howard Stern's Fartman to Kanye's "Im'a letcha finish" to Pee Wee Herman's "heard any good jokes lately", and on and on.

Always something to grab a headline there.  One might even get the idea it's all planned that way.

We didn't mind so much when Elvis shook his hips or Madonna rolled around in her underwear that there was some catchy tunes or substance behind the style.  What does Miley Cyrus offer the world behind the painful white girl attempts at twerking?

To some people, catchy tunes, apparently. Hell if I know who likes Miley's music but I, like most Farkers, signed off on my youth years ago and have no clue what's "in," and what looks "in," looks like sh*t to me. But at least I can admit to being out of touch unlike most of the dipsticks around here.

Twerking's a fad. It'll pass, just like that thing you were into but can't remember anymore until VH1 does a special about it.

They "performed" for about 20 seconds. Then they did the presentation. And yes, it was weird and stupid. I hope Colbert shows the whole "performance".

In late spring of 1956, Elvis appeared on The Milton Berle Show for the first time. The show was broadcast from the USS Hancock, which was docked at the San Diego Naval Station. Despite the novel location, this television appearance is barely mentioned in biographies or other accounts of Elvis' career, because his second appearance on the Berle program has completely overshadowed it.

This appearance on June 5 fanned the flames of the nationwide controversy over his hip-swiveling performing style. Elvis sang "Hound Dog" for the first time on television that spring night. When he began the song, no one knew what to expect, because the tune was new. But the audience responded immediately with enthusiasm. Elvis then went a bit further in his performance: He slowed down the final chorus of the song to a blues tempo, and he thrust his pelvis to the beat of the music in a particularly suggestive manner. The studio audience went wild with excitement.

The next day, the press nicknamed him "Elvis the Pelvis." Many described his act by comparing it to a striptease. Jack Gould of The New York Times declared, "Mr. Presley has no discernible singing ability," while John Crosby of the New York Herald Tribune called Elvis "unspeakably untalented and vulgar." The criticism prompted parents, religious groups from the North and South, and the Parent-Teacher Association to condemn Elvis and rock 'n' roll music by associating both with juvenile delinquency.

Expressing her feminine sexuality shows strength and courage, as long as men aren't looking at it and thinking evil lustful thoughts, then it's objectification and oppression or something, is that about right?

Well, depending on her motives, using her sexuality as means to express herself can be quite empowering and liberating. Being proud of your body is healthy, and there's nothing contradictory between that and being in control of your self-worth. Even if you exploit the traditional views of sexuality in order to sell your music, and further your brand.

The old saying that a man who likes sex is a man, and a woman who likes sex is a whore misses the big picture and is archaic.
