She isn't out going on crazy drug binges, drinking and driving, pissing in buckets, or spitting on her fans, so I'd say she's the model of civility in terms of modern child-star turned superstardom.

Let her dance how she likes, things could be a hell of a lot worse.

This, and while you might've thought it was a trainwreck, her name and her act is the *only* thing I've heard about the VMAs.

This. I honestly don't mind this level of crazy in our celebrities. Let'em do what makes them happy (and money). She doesn't appear to be a danger to anyone or herself, unlike several other young celebrities that we all know.

I don't know what it means and I'm avoiding it like Duck's Dynasty, which is to say poorly.  I don't even own a television and yet this shiat keeps getting through to my brain.

This is why I'm sociopathic when all I'm trying to be is socioapethetic.

2013-08-26 02:53:00 PM
As bad as that shiat was, everybody on the planet should know what they're getting themselves into at this point when they turn on some MTV/Grammy/Rich-People-Congratulating-Themselves Award Show.  The whole point is to engineer some 'shocking' crap that people will talk about for a few days.  It happens every single time, without fail.  So when I read this in TFA:

"MTV has once again succeeded in marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars and condom commercials - while falsely rating this program as appropriate for kids as young as 14. This is unacceptable," Parents Television Council Director of Public Policy Dan Isett says in a statement e-mailed to reporters.

My first inclination is to say: If you are a parent who is allowing your kid to watch these shows, you no longer have any excuse to act all pearl-clutchy and "think-of-the-children"-y.  You knew what this was going to be.  You knew something 'outrageous' was going to happen.  Either be the adult and take some control over the things your children watch, or STFU.

I just watched the video.

I remember watching footage of a Madonna concert some 10+ years ago, where during the show she had a bed pushed out on the stage and she basically simulated masturbating to orgasm.

While crass and feckless, let's not pretend hypersexualized "performances" are reaching any new lows of decency, just keeping it where it has been. And more importantly, making sure everyone is talking about it the next day. Which the media is.

2013-08-26 03:07:16 PM
That is not twerking. Miley Cyrus cannot twerk. She can try. She can replicate the motion. But the fact is, she does not have enough booty to successfully twerk. I whole-heartedly support her efforts, but lets be honest here.

Slim, white girls are prone to a genetic disorder called "flat-butt". This condition is widespread and precludes proper twerking. I say this not to discourage such ladies from co-opting and making use of the motion. I encourage such women (or "tops" of any kind) to practice and perfect the aforementioned activity. Put your heart (and your back) into it and your efforts will be much appreciated.

For men seeking a true twerking experience, I recommend finding a "successful and attractive" partner.

To some people, catchy tunes, apparently. Hell if I know who likes Miley's music but I, like most Farkers, signed off on my youth years ago and have no clue what's "in," and what looks "in," looks like sh*t to me. In late spring of 1956, Elvis appeared on The Milton Berle Show for the first time. The show was broadcast from the USS Hancock, which was docked at the San Diego Naval Station. Despite the novel location, this television appearance is barely mentioned in biographies or other accounts of Elvis' career, because his second appearance on the Berle program has completely overshadowed it.

This appearance on June 5 fanned the flames of the nationwide controversy over his hip-swiveling performing style. Elvis sang "Hound Dog" for the first time on television that spring night. When he began the song, no one knew what to expect, because the tune was new. But the audience responded immediately with enthusiasm. Elvis then went a bit further in his performance: He slowed down the final chorus of the song to a blues tempo, and he thrust his pelvis to the beat of the music in a particularly suggestive manner. The studio audience went wild with excitement.

The next day, the press nicknamed him "Elvis the Pelvis." Many described his act by comparing it to a striptease. Jack Gould of The New York Times declared, "Mr. Presley has no discernible singing ability," while John Crosby of the New York Herald Tribune called Elvis "unspeakably untalented and vulgar." The criticism prompted parents, religious groups from the North and South, and the Parent-Teacher Association to condemn Elvis and rock 'n' roll music by associating both with juvenile delinquency.

Also, acting like a whore is not particularly empowering.  Acting like a whore in order to sell records, even less so.

Expressing her feminine sexuality shows strength and courage, as long as men aren't looking at it and thinking evil lustful thoughts, then it's objectification and oppression or something, is that about right?

Well, depending on her motives, using her sexuality as means to express herself can be quite empowering and liberating. Being proud of your body is healthy, and there's nothing contradictory between that and being in control of your self-worth. Even if you exploit the traditional views of sexuality in order to sell your music, and further your brand.

The old saying that a man who likes sex is a man, and a woman who likes sex is a whore misses the big picture and is archaic.

Truth. I'm always hesitant to go into threads about anything related to feminism, because it seems they're mostly populated by the "Men's Rights" crowd. Threads on any female celebrity are especially depressing as any comments that aren't specifically "forced sexual innuendo, if you know what I mean" or about how they're either a whore (attention or otherwise), a prude/crazy woman that "can't keep a man", etc, gets met with accusations of white knighting. Because apparently the only reason not to be an asshole to a woman I've never met is in order to get laid. It's sad.

I didn't have any clue what this "twerking" was, so I looked it up.  From Wikipedia:

"Twerking was introduced into hip-hop culture by way of the New Orleans bounce music scene. In 1993, DJ Jubilee recorded the dance tune "Do The Jubilee All" in which he chanted, "Twerk baby, twerk baby, twerk, twerk, twerk." . . .A great amount of credit for the expansion of twerking outside of New Orleans can be given to strip clubs in Houston and Atlanta. Twerking was receiving recognition in national releases at least as early as the year 2000, when the Atlanta-based Ying Yang Twins released their debut single "Whistle While You Twurk."

I get it now.  This is a "dance move" made popular by strip clubs in the South.  Wow.  This does not do anything for me.

In this one specific performance? The message was indeed "Look how sexy I am". But that doesn't mean this is the only way we can or should view her as a person. She, just like every person out there, has multiple facets to her personality. This was the time and place to emphasize her sexual side. Miley can't be expected, or required, to use a performance at the VMAs to show off her humor or intelligence. If your significant other uses a seduction routine on you, do you go, "Wow, you're only a whore who has no other qualities!" I hope not.

And to be clear, I don't think Miley is complaining about the attention she received, as other posters have noted. This is exactly the response she wanted. And in that sense, I feel this was probably very empowering for her. In that, "Wow, I got basically every major news organization to talk about my performance!" Whether or not they view it favorably isn't really the point. She accomplished her goal.

well, new orleans bounce is a slightly more robust musical movement.  having gone to a few bounce parties, i can say that, while i don't like people twerking in the media and basically anywhere outside of new orleans, it is perfectly acceptable at a bounce party.  i could be wrong, but at least at the bounce parties I've been to, there's a certain combination of physical mastery and self-deprecating humor involved in the twerk.  a kind of low/high dance of our human comedy

Madonna did a redux of "Like A Virgin" for one of her later concert tours, where she writhed around to a slow version of the song, and simulated masturbation on a big red bed. Not the wedding cake walk to the stage, which was 20-something years earlier.

Well as you can see, I don't follow Madonna's tour. Oh, sorry, I was wrong. Thanks for clearing that up.

T-Boy: I didn't have any clue what this "twerking" was, so I looked it up.

If you haven't seen the lyrics to the Ying Yang twins rap, Whistle While You Twurk, maybe that will do something for you.

Hebalo: Sigh. Macklemore brings it, presents a great song about tolerance and change that also points a finger at modern hip-hop, all done very tastefully, and yet, we have 4 threads on Miley Plasticpants Cyrus.

She's apparently what we deserve.

Agreed.  Not to mention a hard working, great performance by JT.

However the best performance of the night that is getting no recognition, was the performance by Bruno Mars, who always brings it.  He destroyed Gorilla, and it was the only performance of the night I rewatched. Just a masterful performance all around.

Macklemore's song is the most tiresome, over-done, self-flagellatory lump of choir preaching since the movie "Crash". It doesn't reach anyone that needs to hear the message, but gives white, liberal college students another reason to revel in their own tolerance. Eminem's public stunts were more impressive. A single quote from Jay-Z is more meaningful than anything Macklemore could ever do.

1993? So that makes Miley and twerking the same age, then.

Agreed.   It's a homage to the 90s where music videos were about school shootings, teenage runaways, eating disorders or teenage runaways with eating disorders who commit school shootings.   No wonder that joyless, self aggrandizing, over earnest decade forever killed Rock music as the common coin of cool and fun for future generations, as it choked on it's own bloated sense of self importance.

To be fair, that over earnest decade was about the only response one could expect after the previous decade's parade of "let's get drunk and screw" David Lee Roth and Poison videos.  I can only imagine what the '20s response to the '10s will be.

Mad_Radhu: "Oh! That poor woman has the saddest ass. Damned depressing."

"Right! Yeah, it's like The Notebook sad."

"That ass is like coming home from school and finding out your old man ran over your cat sad."

"Mournful. She has a mournful ass. They're like a suicide note stuffed in to rubber panties."

"That ass is like a little kid with progeria cracking all his ribs trying to catch a Nerf ball. Just sad. Damnit she has a gloomy ass!"

"It's like she put a dollars worth of change into some old socks and then taped 'em to backside!"

"I wanna build two little caskets and give her ass cheeks a tasteful, dignified funeral."

That has to be one of the single funniest (and most unexpected) exchanges I've ever seen on TV.

I first learned the actual name for that dance move a few months back with a Cyrus "posts herself twerking on twitter" link.

A few days ago, there was a "photoshop Cyrus twerking in news situations we should be talking about" something or other.

Now this.

There is some serious twerk=Cyrus marketing going on.

Also, acting like a whore is not particularly empowering.  Acting like a whore in order to sell records, even less so.

You sound old and white.

Expressing her feminine sexuality shows strength and courage, as long as men aren't looking at it and thinking evil lustful thoughts, then it's objectification and oppression or something, is that about right?

.But she's okay as long as she voices admiration for a band pre-approved by old white Gen-X geezers.

wait, does being gen-x make you a geezer now?

The millenials are such cultural isolationists that they consider someone 2 years older than them to be a geezer.

I don't consider 26 year olds or even Gen X to be geezers. Hell, I actually really like the Gen X generation.
