(WTOP)   You know that pack of attention whoring hillbillies in Virginia who were doing their own "running of the bulls" festival this past weekend? Well, someone crashed a drone into them   (wtop.com) divider line 59

Crashing drones into shiat is the hottest new meme of the summer, I just decided.

I can't think of any group based in Virginia that would use drones.

Drone? Seriously? A radio-controlled toy aircraft is now a drone in post 911. Wonderful. My car is now an armored personal carrier, too.

The media isn't trying to make a boogie man here. They are only going with their typical over use (incorrectly) of a buzz word in an attempt to sound hip, in the know, on the inside, cutting edge, or just falsely understanding the jargon. They do toys allot with military and tech phrases.

Not when they participate in it in the venue which has held it for years.

drone?  Oh Noes!!  My son and I apparently own two drones.  He has one that can shoot a foam dart, too.  I'll bet the FBI is hot on my trail now.  Time to change my Fark Handle and get a new IP address.

Idiotic. It is really stupid to fly something like that over people, let alone a large crowd.
Things like that are very hard to learn how to fly well.
Also, if there is a power or signal failure in a helicopter-like RC aircraft, its just going to crash. A fixed wing (plane) type RC aircraft at least can glide for a while.
They are lucky that no pointy part of this thing punctured somebody's skull!

IIRC it's about like trimming your fingernails, and prevents the animals from harming each other as well as people.

Some of them fly under their own control back to their launch site when they lose signal. DJI Phantom

The one in the video apparently doesn't. It does look like the ones PETA harasses people with, however. I'll bet there's a serial number or contact info on it.

Wrong on SO many levels......

First, it's NOT a "drone" It's an R/C  model aircraft. see above for a pic of a drone.
Quads or Octocopters ( 8 rotors) in this case, are NOT hard to fly well. Helicopters yes, multirotor no, I fly both.

That crash looked like it was possibly caused by the battery voltage getting too low or, if it was being flown FPV
the pilot may have lost video for a moment. It could have been pilot error.......

Many flight control boards have GPS capability , I don't know of anyone who would build an Octo without GPS.
If you look just above the craft will can see what looks like the popular DJI naza GPS antenna (white disk).

They have RTH (return to home) if they lose signal or are told by the pilot they will return to their take-off position automatically
IF they still have the battery capacity to do so. Maybe a DJI owner can better tell exactly what happened, I fly KK2 and Multiwii boards.

You can see the Octocopter dip to one side then almost recover before it hit .
It had big soft foam landing gear which I doubt could "punctured somebody's skull! " lol.
The 8   10"-12" props could cause some serious damage, but luckily they were not turning very fast at the time.

Somebody lost $2000 -$4000

The "bulls" in this instance are played by the local roller derby team, armed with whiffle ball bats.

WTF?  Where do you live?

I've never been anywhere that had a sign that said "no RCs".  Seriously, I've never heard of such a restriction (that doesn't mean much, I'm just surprised).

I run RC's of many kinds, including some similar to the one in the story.

BTW, the one in the story suffered an interference signal loss event.  In simple terms, the radio signal controlling it was interrupted (it's not hard to do, by accident or otherwise), and the vehicle in question lacks any sort of auto-flight capability.  In fact, it has a classically WRONG radio system which immediately cuts all output to the motors, causing the thing to crash like a stone.  These kind of "safe kill" radios are great for ground vehicles.  Keeps your $$$ toy from crashing at full speed into the nearest solid object.  They are rather NOT good for aircraft, most especially 'copters.

Short version: Dumb operator, dumb build quality, and should never have been over people at any time what so ever.

The only problem I have with stuff like bull fighting or running of bulls is they try and save the tards if they losing to the bulls. I say it should be thunderdome rules, 2 enter 1 leaves.
