At a family party yesterday afternoon, my 11-year-old cousin was excited about the VMAs. We asked her if she wanted to see the reunited N*SYNC. She replied, "Who is N*SYNC?"

And yet, five seconds too long.

I don't advocate violence but if a Hellfire missile were to hit the VMAs I'm not sure I would shed a single tear.

Late 20's-early 30's chubby, unloved women went wild over it I'm sure.

And then went back to having sex with their attractive, always-there-for-them boyfriends. Ha, kidding, they were back to eating alone in no time flat.

Let's not pretend that Timberlake's performance wasn't the best one of the night.

Who the hell would let an 11-year-old watch that shiat?  Not for the "please think of the children" angle, but for the "stop celebrating our shiatty pop culture" one.

It was cool to watch that part.
Joey Fat One.  Lance "We All Knew You were Gay" Bass.  Justin "We All Thought You Were Gay, Guess Not" Timberwhatever.  And the other guys who aren't those guys.
We had to google them.

There was a college girl who did a webcam dance(s) to one of the NSYNC songs.  Far back in the internet archives, before LOLcats and shiat.  I can not remember her name for the life of me, but she is the reason I am an NSYNC fan.   I want to say whe was going to school in Wisconsin or Minnesota.

This is going to torture me until I get this name.

I wonder how long it took Justin to realize he was the only one with any talent in the group? The guy is excellent craftsman of pop music and a genuinely funny actor. "The Immigrant Tale" is my favorite SNL sketch of his.

Depending on how heady that particular 11 year old might be, you could have them watch it but put it in the context of "previous generations have so utterly failed you, that this is what you get to look forward to as 'entertainment' and as a celebration of our pop culture".

taxandspend: How long before the other four members of N*Sync announce they're joining The Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, New Kids on the Block and Boyz to Men on tour?

A challenge about the "first" boy band led me to find out New Kids on the Block joined with Backstreet Boys a couple years back to form NKOTBSB. Yes, that is real

The wikipedia page has the most liberal usage of the term "supergroup" ever: "and the formation of supergroup NKOTBSB which comprised New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys.NKOTBSB's success inspired boy bands who were fairly popular during 1990s and 2000s to make a comeback, such as Blue and 98 Degrees"

My brother-in-law made us watch it while we were waiting to go boating. Wow. That's music today?
The other thing that I found perplexing was that every 15-20 seconds during Timberlake's performance they would cut to Taylor Swift in the audience. I mean, why? Once or twice I could understand, but over and over and over?

/Did see Ellie Goulding for about half a second, so there was that at least.

I was 17 when No Strings Attached came out in March of 2000, and when my sister and I saw them live, there were people there older than me sitting around us....and not parents.  Like, college-aged girls.  Considering one of them was in their 30s at the time, I don't think I was too old to have been a fan then.

I grew up with her (she went to school with my sister). She was one of the very first "unintentional" internet porn stars. I won't list her name here because you can easily find it through a simple google search and I'd rather not add to her misery/infamy. She was legitimately suicidal when that happened. And she was always a sweet girl

Yeah, I don't think so.  Their target demographic was teenage girls, just like every other band of attractive guys that has ever existed, all the way back to the freakin' Beatles.  Of course, I was also listening to Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra, but I've always had eclectic tastes.  I'm not sure why you want to argue this point with me; were you a teenage girl in the late 90s/early 00s?  Unless you were, I can't see how you can claim to be an authority on this over someone who actually was.

Like I already said, people can like whatever the hell they want. You can like kids shows, kids music, kids movies, whatever, but it doesn't make them age appropriate.

Based on your previous comments, I'm about 3 years younger than you so I'm old enough to remember when they were a big deal in pop culture. I didn't know anybody my age or older who admitted to liking them (boys or girls). The people I remember liking them were my much younger cousins or my friends little brothers and sisters. So, people 5-9 years younger than you.

You were too old for that. Sorry. Boy bands are not like board games (ages 8-88!) but more power to you
