I thought I heard even Russia was making noise about the civilian chemical casualties a few days ago? I'm not sure getting involved with feet on the ground is a good idea at this point. Advise Doctors Without Borders and the UN guys to get out, announce loudly that the area around what's his face's home and the capital building will be the target 48 hours ahead of time, them send a few dozen missiles right there.

Gotta back up what you say. Just give the civilians, who have already been through enough, a chance to get the hell out of the way. If he decides to use them as human shields, I don't know what else to tell you. but something's gotta get hit at this point.

Nemo's Brother: neversubmit: Nemo's Brother: Onkel Buck: Im just going to enjoy watching all of Barrys supportive doves turn into hawks

Some will just vanish for a while.  A large number of the usual Total Farkers have been very silent about Obama lately.

I still support those (Bush) and these (Obama) actions no matter who the figure head. These things must be done, I don't expect most people to understand.

What, pray tell, is the end game? How do we win here with intervention?

I assume we're looking for a Bosnia- or Kosovo-style solution. Bomb the crap out of the worst player, and force them to honestly negotiate some kind of a peace, then send in multinational peacekeepers (in this case, they should be from Turkey and the Arab League, and no one else). Going to be tough to do with Assad in power, which means he may get the deal he's been offered to leave sweetened, and we'll probably attempt to take him out with a decapitation strike to get his mind right. Also, if all the Syrian generals' toys are going boom, one of them may handle him for us.

The end game is a colder civil war in Syria, with Saudis and Turks eating IEDs and buying all our surplus MRAPS trucks. Not a great solution, but better than what's been happening the past two years.

IdBeCrazyIf: I'm as pacifist as they come but at some particular point I think we need to just go all Iron Man on them. Destroy military infrastructure, chemical weapons and then just walk away and let them sort out their own problems.

Military infrastructure like power plants, water treatment facilities, bridges, highways... I'm sure the people of Syria would just love all the democracy and freedom you want to rain down on them.

Scythed: Doesn't Syria have an extremely sophisticated and modern air defense system? Aren't they also getting new missiles from Russia and China that were pretty much designed to shoot down American planes?

I don't see this ending as well as Kosovo or Libya.

Considering that Israel has bombed them at will recently to take out imported Russian missiles, I don't see this as that much of a problem. Air defense missiles have a built-in disadvantage against modern aircraft, which is that they can't dodge the missiles fired at their radars. The aircraft can fire and run at the outer range of the SAM, and the SAM can't shoot without lighting off radar and making itself an easy target.

Phil, we've got a new offer. It's about Syria again. Qataris propose an attractive deal and swear that the idea is approved in Washington. We'll have to deliver a CW to Homs, a Soviet origin g-shell [sic] from Libya similar to those that Assad should have. They want us to deploy our Ukrainian personnel that should speak Russian and make a video record. Frankly, I don't think it is a good idea but the sums proposed are enormous.

A Malaysian hacker released two emails that he claimed were internal emails from a company called Britam. The emails were, in fact, forgeries - the headers had been cut and pasted and the purported content has no connection to Britam

bindlestiff2600's link contains more details

Still, the fact that they were obvious forgeries is of no consequence to those conspiracy nuts who really have to believe. Having originally been taken in by the emails, if you look around the web you will even see a theory that the hacker was part of a government conspiracy - the aim of which was to release obviously forged emails regarding a chemical weapon plot so people would subsequently then assume that any subsequently hacked emails that might theoretically be released regarding a chemical weapons plot would also be dismissed as forgeries

So, where are you in this?

Were you unaware that the emails were forgeries, or do you think that the government forged them?

Uncle Tractor: If the US feels compelled to do something, may I suggest sending in half a dozen of those stealth choppers, take out (or capture) the key figures in the Syrian govt. and then get out? That's how he got OBL.

I don't usually approve of that sort of thing, but gassing your own populace kinda changes the rules, IMO.

Unfortunately, Assad has a little better security than OBL did. The only way we're going to hit him directly is from 25,000 feet up, the way we tried to kill Saddam.

Nadie_AZ: It seems likely that President Obama will bomb Syria sometime in the coming weeks.

I would love to go for a few years without this country exporting its top product overseas.

If Obama does use force in Syria, he will do so because of clear evidence that Assad's regime has killed lots of civilians with chemical weapons. Two considerations will likely drive his decision, if it comes to that. First, he has drawn a "red line" on this issue, publicly, at least five times in the last year, and failure to follow through-especially after the latest revelations-would send confusing signals, at best, about U.S. resolve and credibility. Second, failure to respond would erode, perhaps obliterate, the taboo that the international community has placed on chemical weapons (especially nerve gas) since the end of World War I. I suspect that this factor may be more pertinent to Obama, who takes the issue of international norms very seriously.

Why are we getting involved again? Because our President couldn't shut up and feels like he has to act? No, that's not reason enough. Nor is it reason enough that a country in the middle of a civil war is basically throwing the kitchen sink at each other for survival.

I think it's more that Syria is a member of the UN. Sorry for throwing some logic into a Fark thread.

The reason most people don't understand is because their actions have been agressive acts of war against countries that the US Congress did not declare War against.  This is a serious violation of their oath of office to uphold the Constitution.  How do you not understand this highest level of Treason?  The only reason these things "Must" be done is to profit for the MIC, prop up the Fraudulent Federal Reserve Cartel(by keeping Oil and Gas traded with their fiat currency), and placate Israel.

The truth is that the headers to the two documents purporting to be internal Britam emails were cut and pasted and that the content had nothing to do with Britam. Russia and Iran are only too happy to bog the U.S. down in a quagmire in their client state's. Lebanon will have to be part of any intervention since its essentially a proxy/storage site for Syria.  The prospect of entering a battle between Hizb Allah (and Assad) on one side and al-Qaeda cannot produce a favorable outcome. If any 'Western' power is to be involved it should be France, maybe with Turkey as a logistical partner. Both are NATO anyway. France is the former colonial power and has good historical relations with Syria. As far as the U.S. goes--no, no, no, no and PHUKC NO.

I know you believe that there is a conspiracy and that it is important to you that other people believe it too, but the fact is that anyone with google can really easily find the truth by googling for information regarding the forged emails' headers. You don't need luck to find the truth in this instance - you need access to a search engine, the ability to type in two or three words, and less than five minutes to research the topic. The trouble is with people like you that once some fringe website posts half-baked evidence of a conspiracy you believe it without doing any fact-checking. The problem you have is that you aren't very good at filtering information and you aren't very good at admitting when you are wrong. That is, the problem is with you and others like you and that is obviously unfortunate, especially because you think the problem is with everyone else. All we can do is show that you are misguided - we know we can't change the beliefs of people like you, "neversubmit," because it is clearly more important to you to stand by your opinion than to be factaully accurate

mbillips: rkiller1: So the US is going to bomb people to save lives?

From TFA:  In all, "collateral damage" over the 78 days [of the Kosovo bombing campaign] killed an estimated 1,200 civilians.

More than 100,000 Syrians have died in the civil war, 1,000 in the recent chemical weapons attack. It's difficult to stop a war just by bombing one side, but dropping precision-guided bombs on military targets and infrastructure doesn't kill nearly as many people as the civil war you're trying to stop does.

Unless your bombing just weakens the dominant side enough to let the conflict drag on without resolution...then your "surgical" intervention has made things worse.

Your Kind regards, David

Your blog sucks.

/oh, wait. I got this. Other media outlets don't have it because "THEY" don't want them to show it.

Daily Mail in £100,000-plus payout over Syrian chemical weapons story

The article quoted one email supposedly sent between two executives at the company which claimed to show that Britam had agreed to supply chemical weapons to Homs for use in an attack. However, the emails turned out to be forged.

As I said earlier good luck finding out the truth. End the end you will believe what you want to and I still be wondering what happened.

All we can do ...

It's no wonder you are so sure, you can read minds, LOL!

What's with the blinking contrarians coming out of the woodwork? Not quite trolls, but knuckledraggers who will take up an opposite position just to fark with your head. I don't have the right medication for that. Time for the ignore.

Joe Blowme: PunGent: freak7: Attacking Syria is okay because Obama is President, had Bush done it, Democrats would be losing their farking minds.  he'd quit halfway to Aleppo in order to invade Jordan, which was nearby, and had some brown guys in it who said something mean to his daddy once.

FTFY.

/Agrees we should stay out of Syria, actually.

right, trying to assassinate a POTUS is just saying something mean. revisionist history, this is how it works?

NATO didn't believe that crap, and neither do I.

You should totally get that into Wikipedia though...they seem to have not believed it either :)

Lucky for us Romney didn't win we'd be invading Iran right now based off these chemical weapons attacks.

That's right, ignore opposing views or even the Devil's advocate.  The echo chamber is a safe place to hide.

I can read on this very page the contribution of someone calling himself "neversubmit" who posts conspiacy theories and who refuses to admit he is wrong when he is shown that the particular conspiracy theory that he has invested time and effort defending has been debunked, and who instead tries to distract from the fact that he has been shown to be wrong

Just make sure the Air Force gets a  detailed map of where embassies are currently located... Seriously, we don't need a repeat of what happened in Belgrade.
