Never cared for the passenger van, but I wish I could get one of VWs cargo vans here.

Since the Astro went away, there's no decent mid-size van (with actual truck properties) available here in the U.S., thanks to the great European / U.S. Chicken wars.

The Bulli is actually going to be produced? That's cause for major celebration. I heard it was cancelled.

From that link:

2014 VW Microbus is coming with new modern icon of microbus. The cute performance and colorful edition stay in warmth friendly look but still elegant. The strong car that very suitable for family strong car will be very intensive to carry all your family. VW brand try to reborn the new version of family car for microbus function that's will be very effective to use it as daily car.

I loved the pictures of those models from the early-mid-'60s that had the miniature windows in the roof.

VW also made a camper version that was pretty cool ... again, based on what I saw in pictures. Never owned either.

The Ford Transit Connect is a nice cargo van if you need one, if you want something bigger the full size Transit should be hitting lots next year.

Dodge makes a cargo variant of the Caravan IIRC.

If you get in an accident in a VW bus, the steering column is the least of your worries.  The wheel itself will probably sever your spine.

The funny thing about the Transit Connect is that Ford imports them from Turkey as passenger vans and strips the fittings out to make the commercial versions.

I'd tend to agree with that, though the column I was actually referring to is in my roadster (1966: pre-DOT-safety-nonsense). On the other hand, a steering shaft through your chest could theoretically serve as a driver retention device in the event of an accident.

I always wanted a Westfalia camper bus.

2013-08-26 07:05:22 AM
My dad bought one in 1963. It was like driving in a tin can, and closing the windows in the passenger area was an invitation to get your fingers pinched off. As I recall, it was also cold. Miserably hard to heat. But it fit the six of us with (special request) seatbelts, and we had it for about eight years.

Back in 1963 I drove a camper bus from Connecticut to Mexico to California. Top speed 55! Those were the good old days.

It looks like a slightly taller Golf.  WTF is the point?  VW jumped off the van-wagon when they badge engineered Grand Caravans for some dumb-ass reason.

2013-08-26 08:16:03 AM
The cab-over design that makes the Bus (and Vanagon) such a pleasure to drive resists meeting current safety standards.

There was a video on one of the Vanagon sites of a safety test with a Vanagon. It went right over what ever was slammed in to it. However, the idea of putting the brake fluid reservoir right in front of the driver could not have been very smart.

Ugh.  Those things are CRAP.

Seriously dangerously underpowered, they shouldn't have been allowed on the road in the '60s, let alone now.

And who could forget the magnesium engine block?  Once that thing catches on fire, there is no putting it out.

Check out Ford Transit Connect, Chevy City Express or Ram ProMaster which is hitting the market right now.  One of those are likely to fill your needs.  I find it funny that Dodge's smaller cargo truck is just a panel version of the Caravan.  It still has the drink holders for the rear passengers even though the seats are gone and the floor is changed.

2013-08-26 09:04:45 AM
I've never understood why VW didn't ever remake the microbuses.  They made money hand over fist for years off the New Beetle.  As a parent of young kids who can't be trusted to open swinging doors, I need a minivan.  If I could replace my generic looking van with a microbus, I'd be there in a heartbeat, screaming "Shut up and take my money".

For those who have dreamed about their very own westfalia camper, check out this thread (warning, very long) over at VWVortex about a guy who custom built one out of a eurovan.  It covers all the good and bad that comes with it, I found it very interesting.
