the heroic actions of the officers involved cannot be understated,

Not only can their actions here be understated, the officers shouldn't even be named by their own request. They were just cops doing their job, ma'am.

But no, California isn't that classy. Of course they're all heroes and we should totally forget this is the same state where LAPD officers lit up two unarmed women with more than 100 rounds while looking for one giant black man armed to the teeth and driving a totally different vehicle, taze children and the elderly, steal people's cameras, and mostly sit around and write traffic tickets to meet quotas just because they did their job for once.

So because some officers make mistakes or abuse their power we shouldn't appreciate those that do their job well?

Sure the tractor detail is a bit unusual, but shooting the crazy guy with the gun is what police are supposed to do. Stopping crimes in progress is the only job police have that's worth a damn. They're not heroes for putting down the ticket pad and ceasing their extortion of drivers for 20 minutes to go stop a real crime, they're adequate.

It must be fun to be able to just call something whatever you want it to be, and think that turns it into that thing.

It's an armored personnel carrier, Mr Pedantic.
Just the thing that a "not-army" needs to patrol a civilian neighborhood.

Police had responded to the home once before in 2008 for a mental health call.

As someone with a family member who has been picked up, and ultimately released by police, after she threatened to kill someone and was diagnosed as psychotic with homicidal tendencies, I dread being mentioned in an article like this one someday.

If I was religious I'd be praying for the surviving brother.

define "more militarized".

If your definition is assault rifles, Kevlar helmets, and bulletproof vests. Then yes they have become more militarized.....just like the public has.

But your question is just a deflection since you didn't say "more militarized", you said "an army".

I gotta hear why you think cops have been trained to fight? A SWAT team is the best of the best the cops have to offer and half the time those morons can't even get the house right when they kick down the door. Marines might not be the sharpest bulbs in the drawer when it comes to things like nuclear physics and microbiology, but they can read a farking map. They're also exclusively trained to combat other armed humans and have a whole boatload of better toys to choose from.

When you compare soldiers to cops, the only similarity is they both have uniforms.

I asked a simple straight forward question about an item many police departments already have. can you answer the question or not?

why should they not have them? Do you have any information about them being misused?

2013-08-26 06:56:34 AM
Was it a 'tank'?  No.  It was an armored car.  Robust defense does not automatically mean 120mm smoothbore cannon, or 20mm cannon, TOW missiles, smoke dispersal or the myraid of other weapon and defensive systems found on explicitly military weapons.

Are the police an 'army'?  Simple qualities of being uniformed, armed, and trained do not automatically make something a military organization.  Legal mandate and practical use of the organization actually 'do' matter.

Unless there's been a vast sea change among law enforcement entities... I'ma guess that these vehicles are the shiny toy broken out once in a blue moon, with day-to-day activities being conducted with the crown-vic, charger, taurus police variants.

2013-08-26 07:00:20 AM

log_jammin: why should they not have them?

Because they're expensive and pretty much useless and the LAPD are the last people in the world I'd trust with a pair of scissors that didn't have blunted tips let alone light armor, so even having ONE of these things in the entire state owned by any police department at all is a risk I'm not willing to take. There could be some kind of inter-department vehicle pool or something and the LAPD could eventually lay hands on it then there WILL be a story about abuse.

But aside from that if the cops stopped writing traffic tickets and kicking in the wrong door and shooting innocent people and pets, y'know basically were good cops instead of bad people, then you're right they could totally have one of these because they'd be clearing ganglands and fortified warehouses. As it is, they could make do with a bus with screens over the windows to stop bricks.

I trust them implicitly.

Easy: because this isnt a war zone and the cops (despite their wet dreams of being in combat) aren't fighting the taliban.

Wtf do you need an APC for against a guy on an open-cab tractor? Grab a deer rifle, snipe him out the seat...game over.

The police don't need (and should NOT have) military equipment.

If non-cops are not allowed certain types of weapons/armor systems because they are not military, then the same rule should apply to cops...because they are not military.

Popular science article two years ago nyc.

Swat commander regularly rolls up on a random scene in apc's because in his words "We are in the business of intimidation, and that means displaying a show of force."

They dont need the protection...they just want to scare people into compliance.

Sounds like another group from history...

Btw: a 7mmMAG or 338Laupa with steel core ammo will perforate 7mm of mild steel rolled homogenous armor like that used on the police's apc. Just saying.

The militarization of the police has another unintended side effect: it makes people who are very wary of a heavily armed force whose purpose is keeping the citizens from getting all uppity (sorta like how the founding fathers were wary of the same) ensure they have weapons capable of defeating police armor.

Pepper spray has been misused to the tune of a 5.1 million dollar wrongful death settlement. Anything in a cops arsenal will be misused sooner or later. There aren't enough of these on the road to have rolled over a pregnant woman yet. But it will happen.

That's what I'm saying!  They should have had a .50cal Browning mounted to that baby, but thanks to all the pansy cop-haters that'll never happen.

well that's pretty stupid.

this sentence is in English yet it makes no sense.

used force to avoid confrontation? wtf?

doglover: Remember how you were lambasting some up thread for making up definitions of words?

APC, Armored Personnel Carrier, has armor right in the name. It's armor.

It's not a heavy tank.

Armor, lighter than a tank... light armor.

yes I remember. and you're making up definitions.

ReapTheChaos: You don't consider an armed individual on a tractor, randomly shooting at civilians, a domestic terrorist?

Not unless the attack was politically motivated.

So, for example, the attack on Sandy Hook wasn't terrorism, in that the motives weren't political, but the Boston bombing was a terrorist attack, because the motives were political.

It's pretty easy to distinguish between the two, really.

Also, it doesn't look like they actually used the APC:

Police readied a SWAT team, but other officers arrived first and killed Carnan during a deadly confrontation, police said.

Sounds like the first officers on the scene engaged the shooter immediately, which is the current doctrine with an active shooter.  The SWAT team would have been the one with the APC, and the guy was already dead when they got there.

I would hope that if that happened anywhere in my neighborhood, that he'd end up with a .308, .270, .30-30, or .30'06 in the chest before he got very far.

As National Journal reported in 2000, in the first three years after the 1994 law alone, the Pentagon distributed 3,800 M-16s, 2,185 M-14s, 73 grenade launchers, and 112 armored personnel carriers to civilian police agencies across America. Domestic police agencies also got bayonets, tanks, helicopters and even airplanes.

Care to change your tune? What the FARK do cops need grenade launchers and bayonets for?

It is stupid, but most people seem to have a fear of authority and won't let us arm the cops the way they need to be.

Not only that, but it sounds like he was armed just with a pistol.   If he's driving the tractor, that means he can't hit for shiat because he's shooting one handed on a bouncing, moving platform, which is probably why no one was killed in the "tractor rampage" part of this incident (he killed his mother prior to that phase of the incident).

That being the case, you could hit him from 75 or 100 yards away and not worry about him hitting you.  You would have to be very unlikely indeed for someone to hit you under those conditions, and he doesn't have to know that you're there.  It's OK to shoot someone like that in the back.

ReapTheChaos: The more you eat the more you fart: Easy: because this isnt a war zone and the cops (despite their wet dreams of being in combat) aren't fighting the taliban.

You don't consider an armed individual on a tractor, randomly shooting at civilians, a domestic terrorist?

No, one person randomly shooting people is not a terrorist.  They are normally mentally ill, or just bad people.  In your statement, ANYONE who shoots more than 1 person is a terrorist.  Pull your head out of your ass.

The more you eat the more you fart: Police are NOT military..they are law enforcement...and should NOT have access to or use military-style equipment to wage war against the populace.

They didn't wage war against the populace, they went after one gunman who was waging war against the populace by driving around on a tractor randomly shooting at people.

He was not waging war moran.  Someone who gets on an open cab tractor, and starts firing shots off is not waging war, he is looking for attention.  And he got it.  It was probably a suicide by cop situation.  Notice that he only killed one person.  Sounds like a mental problem.  Of course we should respond as if he is an invading country.

Enjoy your day sheep...

Man, bootlickers constantly amaze me. The police are given APCs (and apparently farking grenade launchers) and they just can't see a problem.

Fun fact, lapdogs, "it looks scary" actually does mean quite a bit. It's propaganda. Dark colors, covered faces, and intimidating looks have been an effecting persuasive tool since evolution kicked off. Not to mention it's nothing more than a big, rolling waste of money.

But hey, no problem, right? The cops need this kind of shiat, right? I mean, the world has become just so dangerous, hasn't it?

California police shot and killed Ryan Carnan, 29, on Saturday after he allegedly murdered his mother and fired more shots at random as he cruised the neighborhood on a tractor.

It's not a tank. It's an armored personnel carrier, 'carrier' being the operative word. It has no weaponry, and it's designed to get the police in safely when some asshole has decided that he want to take everyone he encounters to their grave.

Jesus, they've had these for decades. Un-bunch the panties.

It must be fun to be able to just call something whatever you want it to be, and think that turns it into that thing.

Police wear Kevlar? welp...they're an army.

armored car looks scary? guess that makes it a tank.

army:  a large armed group: a trained or armed fighting force

Sounds like today's cops.

tank: an enclosed heavily armed and armored combat vehicle that moves on tracks

Oh, you got him!  That  enclosed heavily armed and armored combat vehicle doesn't move on tracks!

It's not "armed". Please point to the weapons mounted onto it, or integrated in its design.

As I have learned on Fark, the police are not a subject one should take with a reasoned middle approach. They are government-sponsored mobsters, and even though it would appear that they do have a necessary purpose in serving and protecting the population-- a purpose for which they continuously put their lives on the line-- we shouldn't bother commending them when they do that job because that's what they're farking paid to do. Not to mention, there are those other situations where cops tend to abuse their power and generally act like douchepickles.

So no... We shouldn't commend them for putting their lives on the line and/or a job well done. They used a "tank," which is bad and therefore means that this doesn't count. And if it did count it still wouldn't because police are are always bad. If you hold the position that, while some are bad, some are just honest guys who want to serve and protect the community, then you are wrong. Even the good ones are bad for not instantly turning in their badge the second they discover a bad cop exists within some part of the country. Much like you are either a Jebus-loving free-capitali-whore Republican (as God intended us all to be) or an evil devil-worshiping commu-sociali-Nazi, you cannot be found to hold a middle ground. Either you are a free citizen who recognizes that we must rise up against the tyranny of the never good and always thuggish police, or you are a bootlicking, cop-loving sheep.

Now take your "reason" elsewhere.

To justify their expanded budgets(including APC's) SWAT teams are taking a bigger roll in things like handling warrants, ect.

So, yeah, don't think you need a swat team to serve a warrant.

To be fair, there are PLENTY of times when the police take the 'shoot first and ask questions later' approach when they shouldn't, and people have died. THIS is not one of those times.

I agree, this always bagging on the cops thing is getting old, I'll call 'em out when they deserve it.

Indeed. LAPD was one of the pioneers in using tanks. Originally they got one for knocking down or towing out the gated entrances of crack houses when doing raids.

Subby- its simi valley. They use 2 patrols and a k9 unit on routine traffic stops.  3 cars, one driver. What do they usually get out of it ? Nothing.
And, tfa is wrong- Bridle Path is not a horse park- the tract is zoned for horses and there are riding trails along the streets in most of it.

I live near the neighborhood in question. All the cops and firetrucks went past my house. It did seem like there was way to much activity to be a house fire. Front page news in Simi! Sorry for all the loss of life and pain this guy caused to his family.
