In theory, I agree with him on a lot of that.

I went to school with Bobby.  He was a very down to earth guy.  Really nice.  Anybody who chose their "Americanized" name because he liked Bobby on the Brady Bunch is OK in my book.  ;)

It seems Mr. "Stop being the stupid party, GOP!" isn't practicing what he preaches. If he thinks that he's positioning himself for a 2016 nom by adopting this myopic view, he might as well forget it.

Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-Louisana, wrote an op-ed for Politico on Sunday suggesting "undue emphasis" on "our heritage, ethnic background, skin color, etc." is a "step backward" and creates racial inequality.

So... no more Saint Patrick's Day parades then?

2013-08-25 04:57:43 PM
The actual Op-Ed is something to behold.  As David Bernstein noted on Twitter, it reads like an essay on racism written for an 8th grade social studies assignment.

Not racist, but voted #1 into office by racists!

Exactly.  And if any state has a population who is extremely proud of their heritage, it's farking Louisiana.

/the only person I met who honestly believed the south would rise again was from New Orleans.

No, that's trying to suppress the dignity and culture of mainstream Americans and destroy our heritage and ethnic background, which is a step backward and creates racial inequality.

Only white people have culture, is the thing.

But Southerners need to be able to display the Confederate flag because we must allow them to wallow in their unique ethnic and cultural heritage.

I didn't realize anyone still cared what Jindal had to say.  I kind of thought he was a male Palin who never got around to quitting.

He has a point.  If the coons just would stop being black there wouldn't be any racism.

Amazing how Irish-Americans, and Italian-Americans, and German-Americans can hyphenate their self-designations, and then go out and hold festivals celebrating the not-American part, where government doesn't just say it's really cool, but actively supports and publicizes it.

I wonder what could be different for African-Americans ...

/Here's an idea, PBJ: they will stop calling themselves African-Americans when your party quits thinking of them as Prelynched-Americans.  Deal?

2013-08-25 05:05:20 PM
I can appreciate the desire for assimilation but you are never going to have an America where everyone forgets their "roots". There's nothing wrong with people who enter American culture but still keep their own. There is also nothing wrong who live here and contribute to American society in a positive way but stick to only their own culture. As such, it sounds like Jindal is trying to target people who are different from an average American, and mark them as suspicious.

And while what Jindal is saying is relatively sensible compared to his and his party's usual inane bloviating, it is anathema to GOP and right-wing ideals to consider immigrants to be as American as people who can trace their ancestry back to the American Revolution or earlier. So I suspect his bid for president will flounder because he is "too liberal". How sad.

2013-08-25 05:05:49 PM
bobby jindal like nancy reagan seems to think that "just say no" is an adequate policy. i am far from a fan of special treatment for the differently colored, abled, whatever but there is a rather stark history of discrimination that has to be addressed and corrective action taken.

that said separating yourself by culture, race, color and not working toward assimilation is short sighted. for instance ebonics was a bad idea not only because it perpetuated a stereotype but it closed doors to economic advancement. BoA wasn't hiring folks fluent in ebonics for their training programs. even in the getto.

Jindal is clearly projecting his own issues. He doesn't like people seeing him as a hyphenated-American and not just an American, so instead of blaming the racists who refuse to see people of color as real Americans, he blames other people of color for it.

I don't care if African-Americans call themselves "African-Americans" as opposed to just "Americans."  I have an actual problem with Southerners who continue to fly the Confederate flag, believing themselves to be superior to everybody else.  I live in Redneckistan, and I see that stupid farking flag all over the damn place.  So if Mr. Jindal wants to talk about shutting up and melting, how about he tell these assholes to step into the 21st century and realize the Confederacy is over, it lost, and it's never coming back.

cultural assimilation isn't the problem. the problem is being accepted as they are into society. why should they have to conform to another's idea of acceptable? what about their culture do you find hindering their acceptance?

No, it's because they insist on attending black baptist churches instead of entering the welcome embrace of white baptist churches. They refuse to assimilate.
