The per diem for federal workers in Manhattan is $216. I think they'll survive.

2013-08-25 06:35:30 AM
Doesn't all that money come out of the same pot anyway?  Presidential salary, secret service, White House staff, military, roads, all that stuff will come out of the taxpayer pot. So I am assuming the subby's low level irritating is whether this group of staff paid for their lunch with their wages or expenses?

Does the President have a per diem? I'm honestly not sure. Everyone else does but is he a regular GS level employee? I have no idea how to figure that out. If he isn't, then he pays for meals out of pocket. His detail can expense anything as long as they don't go over. It varies by region and time of year but it would be hard to go over in most places. It's a pretty generous per diem.

Toasted capers are farking awesome and so versatile they work just about anywhere you would use pepper - from broiled fish to salads to eggs to... well you get the idea.  Get a jar of capers, toast them in your toaster oven (300º for about 20-30 mins), then toss them all over everything you make.  You'll be glad you did.

Bite your tongue.

Might as well, seeing as he has no taste.

I suppose you think olives are actually edible, too.

It's probably a good thing the D&C doesn't allow comments because she would probably be ridiculed like crazy on this "article"

jake_lex: If it's the right wing derp-o-sphere, no matter what follows "Are we suppoed to be outraged when Obama...", the answer is "yes." The whole point of the right wing media is to keep low-information voters permanently angry at President Obama and the Democratic Party in general.

And no matter what, the right always enters election time with 25% of the vote right off the bat.

As far as your lunch goes, that's a lot of cheese, Mr. President.

We elected a President, sir.  Not a king!

Never impressed by much of anything on Park Ave.  The silliest place by far is the "Euro-African" bistro across the street from Jines.

/Still miss Wegman's here in Iowa

are we supposed to be outraged when Obama

The answer is yes, subby.  The answer to that question is always yes.

2013-08-25 02:53:31 PM
"I'll have what the president had," I told the waitress at Magnolia's Deli & Cafe on Friday, just 23 hours after you dropped by one of Park Avenue's most popular cafés and ordered half a grilled cheddar sandwich on sourdough, cream of tomato soup with artichokes and cheese and a glass of iced tea.

As far as your lunch goes, that's a lot of cheese, Mr. President. And I'm not so sure the federal school lunch program, or the first lady, will count that pickle as a vegetable. Nice try.

Wouldn't the tomato soup and the artichokes count as the vegetable parts of the meal?

/Maybe he just should've put some ketchup on his sandwich. . .

2013-08-25 03:00:04 PM
Look at this president eating those sandwiches like he owns the place.

Did that article even have a point? It didn't even come off as particularly "outragey" to me. I was more confused than outraged by the end.

Obama is expected to pick up the tab for his entire security detail, that's the point.  He should also tuck them into bed and read them bedtime stories at night because they very well might take a bullet for him someday.

whatsupchuck: Obama is expected to pick up the tab for his entire security detail, that's the point

Expected to by whom? Did Bush do this? Clinton? HW? Reagan?

ginandbacon: The per diem for federal workers in Manhattan is $216. I think they'll survive.

ginandbacon: Oh hang on, this was Rochester so the per diem would have been $96. Still...

I'm glad you corrected that, but that's part of the reason I insist on using New York City for the New York City, and New York for the state.

Sorry.  My second sentence was supposed to trip your sarcasm detector.  He is expected to only by idiots such as the author of TFA.

ginandbacon: ArkAngel: ginandbacon: colinspooky: Doesn't all that money come out of the same pot anyway?  Presidential salary, secret service, White House staff, military, roads, all that stuff will come out of the taxpayer pot. So I am assuming the subby's low level irritating is whether this group of staff paid for their lunch with their wages or expenses?

Does the President have a per diem? I'm honestly not sure. Everyone else does but is he a regular GS level employee? I have no idea how to figure that out. If he isn't, then he pays for meals out of pocket. His detail can expense anything as long as they don't go over. It varies by region and time of year but it would be hard to go over in most places. It's a pretty generous per diem.

He has an expense account. I believe it is $50,000.

Are you sure it's not $50,000,000? I feel like I heard that on Fox.

Yes but you can't get 34 warships and an aircraft carrier through the St. Lawrence locks in so short an amount of time. After all it is just across the lake from those socialist commies in Toronto.

Saners: tl;dr version:

Dear Mr. President: We ate at the same deli at different times. And I'll also take the time to take a few underhanded swipes at both you and the first lady. The end.

"Karen Miltner has been writing about food for the Democrat and Chronicle since 2000"

She really should stick to food. Political reporting just isn't her bag.

Look at the reaction to Michelle Obama telling kids to eat healthy and get out of the house.
The answer is yes.

Although according to the imdb, he stayed in character even when not on the set during the filming of "The Last King of Scotland."

Whitaker was a more believable Idi Amin than Idi Amin was!
