(Motorsports Talk)   Summer break is over; status quo is not with Mercedes and Red Bull dominating qualifying. Then again, with 100% chance of the infamous Ardennes weather, it could be almost anyone's race. Belgian Grand Prix, lights out at 8 am Eastern   (motorsportstalk.nbcsports.com ) divider line

I don't hold out much hope for Hamilton in holding off Vettel.  Germans are hard to beat in the Ardennes.

All you have to do is draw them out of their defensive lines.

There's something you don't see every day in F1: Greenpeace protestors scaling the grandstands.

/good morning to all the USA F1-atics!

2013-08-25 07:47:09 AM
Man I hate grid walks.  They're just never interesting, and the interviewer always needs to make it more about himself than the event.

2013-08-25 07:47:41 AM
good lord, is that a rock version of the Austrian anthem?

2013-08-25 07:49:10 AM
Well, that was...a thing.

2013-08-25 07:49:20 AM
Sorry, Belgian anthem

2013-08-25 07:52:08 AM
Whoa -- they parachuted onto the grandstand? I think I hear the clanking of brass balls.

/though I'm not sure I see the point of paratrooping into an F1 race.

They're going to unveil some sort of banner, apparently.

Let's see, Raikonen starting from 8th, Alonzo 9th, Massa 10th, given the history of starts at Spa, that's not good news for them.

2013-08-25 07:55:24 AM
Anyone catch the insanity of qualifying yesterday?

2013-08-25 07:55:58 AM
My guess is something to do with their standoff with Russia over drilling in the Arctic. The Google-tubes inform me that Greenpeace has launched an icebreaker ship near the planned drilling area.

2013-08-25 07:59:54 AM
And with the Marussia's in the middle of the field, and a Caterham there, how much of a clusterfark is the start going to be?

This is a place where I really wonder if they might want to consider moving the Start line; going down into Eau Rouge was one thing, but moving it behind La Source?  Not a whole lot better.

That was an odd one, a fairly regular occurrence at Spa. It's funny, though, to see guys with 1.49 times behind those with 2.03's. The vagaries of 3-phase quali in action.

Max Chilton is a farking wizard.

The one thing saving them is that F1 engines don't make much torque, so the cars don't jump off the line when the lights go out. Next year's engines make a lot of torque. They're going to haul ass off the line. That's going to make Spa really really interesting.

Yep. And yeah qualifying at Spa is always entertaining.

heh I had the same thought

2013-08-25 08:05:26 AM
WHAT? Where did Red Bull get that kind of speed?

2013-08-25 08:05:26 AM
Great start for all drivers not named Mark.

Vettel looks depressingly fast. Pray for rain.

2013-08-25 08:06:44 AM
That was really depressing.  If there's no rain, this race looks over already.  That was an insane drive out of Eau Rouge.

2013-08-25 08:08:24 AM
Really, I don't think it makes much difference what tire compound the Marussia's and Catterham's are running....there's quite a bit mroe than a 1 sec/lap difference there.

cameroncrazy1984: Vettel looks depressingly fast. Pray for rain.

And Adrian Newey is god. Silverstone is as much about speed, hell more so, than Spa and the Red Bulls couldn't blow by people like Vettel just did.

From 9th to 4th? Fernando Johnson?

2013-08-25 08:14:01 AM
Vettel got a much better line through Eau Rouge, to be fair, but still, that car has a ridiculous amount of speed.  No slipstreaming there.

2013-08-25 08:14:28 AM
Everyone's passing the Dutchie on the left-hand side today.

Up to 3 now.

During the last practice session the top speed through the speed trap and only car over 300 km/h was Vettel. Indeed he was 2 km/h faster than anyone else.

Uh oh, Raikonen with possible brake issues.

Kimi up to P8

If his brakes don't cool off in a hurry he's not going to be there for long.

Technically, you're right. He's up to P6 now.

Sergio gets a drive-thru - for once, Ricochet is not the one responsible for a fark-up at Spa.

"I don't understand you speak too early", the wit of Kimi Raikonen

2013-08-25 08:29:56 AM
Did the Greenpeace folks do whatever they're planning. If not, they should be charged ££ for watching the race.

2013-08-25 08:30:34 AM
Up to P5 now.

Effectively P7, since there are only 2 guys in the top ten who've pitted, and they're both behind Kimi.

2013-08-25 08:34:22 AM
Down to P12 after pitting.

2013-08-25 08:34:47 AM
Does space warp around Vettel or something? You shouldn't be able to cruise through the bus stop chicane and pass like that.

2013-08-25 08:36:50 AM
Webber is going awful fast on the hard tires. If the Reb Bulls, have things this figured out....

Does anyone have an idea why there's so many lorries at the exit of Pouhon corner?  Seems way away from anything except whatever is going on at the buildings inside Stavelot corner.

Oh yeah!  I'm not so sure about the penalty for Perez, but whatever.

Felipe, Kimi is faster than you.
