There are very good rivalries all over, and it's hard to say who is #1. To be honest, I don't care if they call the rivalry between my alma mater & that school in Ohio the #1 rivalry.  They could easily choose any number of bitter rivalries in college football, with any number of legitimate reasons why.  The rivalry could be #100 on the list, and I'd still hate those guys in Ohio.  Our own rivalry is our own little ball of hate, and you can't take that away.

Tennessee vs. Alabama

Anytime you have the FBI involved, and a suspicious death involving a booster, it should top the list.

Having lived in both Alabama and Michigan, I give the edge to Auburn v Alabama over OSU v Michigan because in Alabama both teams are in the same state. When I was a kid it wasn't at all unusual for another kid, who was an Alabama fan, to randomly come up to me in the mall in the middle of the summer and yell 'Fark you, Auburn [homosexual slur]' simply because I was wearing an Auburn shirt. Never had that happen in Michigan because most of the Ohio State fans were on the other side of the border. The few that were in the state would never have the nerve to do  something like that while on the wrong side of the state line. In Alabama, fans of both teams have to interact on a daily basis. In a sane society this would lead to people needing to put aside the rivalry and get along. Sadly Alabama isn't the most sane place around. And the insanity goes on 365 days of the year.

/The stupidity of fans in general is inversely proportional to how many classes they actually look at the school they cheer for. Most actual graduates of UA are pretty decent folks. The sidewalk fans though...

Because you don't know the difference between alumnus and alumni. Or you have multiple personalities.

No other rivalry game will ever be the only game played on its own day, alone with no competing games. No contest.  (Just like the last eleven years.)

One not on the SC-Clemson game, when they say it was suspended for "Fisticuffs" what they mean is Clemson cadets (it was originally a military college) got so pissed after taunting from a loss they locked bayonets and marched on Columbia. It took govt intervention to keep it from being a minor war. naturally after that the game was suspended for awhile. We would be one of the oldest rivalry games ever except for that time out.

The fact that they're in the same state is why I'd doesn't match up in my opinion.

List fails without FSU-Miami and Harvard v. Yale.

Looks like the list of somebody who has watched 5 years of football.  South Carolina can't be on any all time rivalry list.  They've only been good since Spurrier was there and only have an SEC east championship and 1969 or so when they won the ACC.  Two good seasons basically.  These turkeys could have messed up #1 but at least they got Michigan vs. Ohio St.   Army v. Navy on there.  USC v. Notre Dame.  Alabama v. Auburn. That is what they got right pretty much.

Rivalries need a) length of time- many years of hatred and oppression b) to mean something: state or national bragging rights, conference championship, national championship in order of preference.  At some point the game needed to be for all 3.  c) if you lose you need to hear about it until the next year- the game must occur every year- when you take a year off for a good reason like say a world war, there must be gnashing of teeth or congressional intervention.

The list was mostly cat piss.

Nobody cares about any rivalry game unless its UGA/UF and maybe when FSU/Miami is decent but its rare now.

Oh and quit acting like the civil war game means anything, nobody gives a shiat about that game at all, to be a watchable rivalry game it has to be a game people will watch no matter what the teams respective records are going into the game.

You're just bitter because your side lost the one with the highest attendance.

Just because people in your neck of the woods probably aren't aware that the United States extends beyond the Mississippi River doesn't mean that no one else is interested. I don't give a flying f*ck about Florida/Georgia or any of your sh*tty teams playing each other, but I'm not going to pretend other people don't care. Nor am I going to pretend that corporate pumping of teams makes a rivalry more meaningful.

They've only played 25 times in 100 or so years.  It's building into a great rivalries but it is going to take a little longer for it to be a "best rivalry."  But the New Year brawl will always be bigger in the Blue Grass.

Kentucky sucks too much at football for it to be a top 10 football rivalry.  If it was an overall rivalry or a basketball rivalry list, I'd say U of L/UK better be high on that list.  I know a lot of UK fans who call football season "Basketball Preseason" and just treat it like a distraction because they've historically been lousy.

OK: you didn't specify division 1, but let's have a look:

Cincinnati/Miami (OH): 1888
North Carolina/Wake Forest: 1888
Purdue/Indian: 1891
