Too many pictures of him with a Sawx hat on.

I think he could, NYC only bars mayors from serving two consecutive terms.  But then again, they already have a conservative statist at the helm, why sub him out for one who has been photographed in drag and suffers from PTSD?

Christine Quin and Bill de Blasio?

Who?

I've seriously never heard either of their names before this election.

Any New Yorker Farkers wanna give us the skinny on them?

Unless you live in NYC, I don't know why you would have expected to have heard of the candidates.

And the law which bans mayors from serving more than two consecutive terms has been changed, which is why Mike Bloomberg is on his third term.

Weiner had a national profile before his lack of self control got the better of him. Bloomberg also I'd heard of before he ran. Even Rudy got national ink before he ran. These guys? Not so much is my point, I guess.

Wasn't Quin on Fark awhile back for something retarded? I can't recall, just that somebody Bloomberg was grooming to succeed him did something that was both unpopular and supremely stupid.

What's your point? Getting national headlines means you're likely to be a good mayor?

Weiner was a shameless self-promoter who worked the cable news program circuit hard. What exactly did he do in Congress of any significance?

Quinn has been City Council Speaker since 2006. New Yorkers who follow local politics know exactly who she is.

De Blasio has been a council member and is currently the public advocate.

Given the diverse backgrounds of NYC mayors, there is no one right resume, but rather, right ideas.

What the hell is wrong with our political system that these are the candidates for freakin' mayor of freakin' New York?

See also the VA governor race...

2013-08-24 07:45:24 PM
And the rest of the country is divided between those not giving a rip about NYC's next mayor and those who are actively angry about being constantly told they should care about NYC's next mayor.

Sarah Palin should run. I bet she would win. NYC could use some boot straps and pit bulls with lipstick.

Quinn held a press conference about raising the legal age for buying tobacco to 21.

THIS! Can we get a mayor who doesn't enforce the Cabaret license law (noise ordinance enforcement is separate for this btw) and pushes for it's elimination, doesn't tell it's police force to pick up all the poor people off the street when a foreign dignitary arrives and then dumps them out again, actually has it's police force follow the US Constitution, and finally a mayor who stops trying to turn New York City into Disneyland?

Well, don't ask Montreal for advice, that's for sure!

Bill de Blasio

I don't think it's possible to have a less exciting name.

2013-08-24 09:31:44 PM
If NYC were its own state, it would be the nation's 12th most populous.

There's 3 or 4 people in this race that I feel are capable of doing the job competently. I'm not concerned; the next mayor cannot possibly be as enamored of Wall Street as Bloomberg has been.

2013-08-24 10:13:18 PM
We've got a guy here in San Diego that's now looking for a mayor job.

2013-08-24 10:16:42 PM
Joe Lhota would actually be a pretty good choice -- a very capable guy with a long record of public service. And he's a moderate Republican, more in the Javitz/Rockefeller mode than the Tea Party crazies.

Of course I've got to vote for Uncle Adolfo.

2013-08-24 10:40:55 PM
Just elect Weiner. It'll at least be funny.

2013-08-24 10:52:18 PM

I dunno, Bill Thompson is slightly less exciting of a name.

De Blasio actually seems like the rare left-wing Democrat. I thought they had gone extinct. I look forward to voting for him (unless he proves me wrong).

The only real confusion for New York City primary voters is figuring out who the "Anybody but Quinn" candidate is. The two leading candidates for that are Thompson and de Blasio. Thompson has the backing of the Democratic clubs; de Blasio has a better media team and a very photogenic son (seriously, google that kid's fro). Once the runoff hits, the anti-Quinn vote will coalesce in one person and Quinn will get crushed.
