(Christian Science Monitor)   I realize that everyone is still recovering from the news of Ben Affleck's casting role but I think it might be important to let people know that San Francisco's water supply is on FIRE   (csmonitor.com) divider line 66

What the hell is the problem? San Francisco is surrounded on three sides by water.

2013-08-24 06:53:05 PM
No it's not subby. The forest around the main water source is on fire and there are some concerns about soot but they are monitoring it (it's unlikely that it will be a problem but better safe than sorry). The bigger problem is that due to the fires the hydroelectric plants and their transmission lines are in danger.

Since when does San Francisco get its water from the Cuyahoga?

Matthew Keene: What the hell is the problem? San Francisco is surrounded on three sides by saltwater.

FTFY. I don't think they have time to build a fully-operational desalination plant.

Yeah, and my family is actually right next to the fire. They're all evacuated. Glad I'm not up there, but these things are scary as hell.

Paris1127: FTFY. I don't think they have time to build a fully-operational desalination plant.

They put the water from the main reservoir (Hetch Hetchy) into Crystal Springs, then from Crystal Springs into the treatment process then into various smaller reservoirs scattered all over the place. Any soot present will precipitate out long before the water makes it into a tap. There may be a slight aftertaste  for some people at worst (and that will probably just be in their heads).

haha.  That will learn em a lesson.  It is the enviro hippie dipshiat types in SF who have continually stood in the way of Ca building more water storage capacity.  Maybe once they nearly die from thirst they will wise up.

If only there were some device which could move water and protect the water pumps.

While the fire is not good. (Stay safe everyone!) The water itself is not actually on fire.

I wondered how long it would take for Cleveland to creep into the thread. Y'all can thank them for the EPA. Caught fire 3 times, ya know.

*fist bump*

They're ok. Just worried about the houses and ranch. My cousin got his family out after DC-10s dumped Boron all over his place. He said the planes looked like they were about twenty feet off the ground. Grandparents went to a family cabin on the other side of the mountain, but if the wind goes as predicted it will push the fire straight up the canyon to their house. Ironic because Gramps was a fire chief for Santa Ana. The fire crews that are on this kick some ass though so we're optimistic.

Went through one like this as a kid. The Stanislaus complex fire in 1987... Seeing an entire mountain burn when you're 9 stays with you.

I live a couple hundred miles north. We've had hazy mornings and ash falling from the sky. Nothing like a few years ago, though, when there were burned leaves falling out of the sky.

You shut your whore mouth.

Anyone (within reason) can be Batman. Keaton was a little lacking on the debonair aspect of Bruce Wayne, but he was the *only* entrant so far to capture the underlying insanity of a man who dresses up as a bat every night.

Hiked Hetch Hetchy earlier this summer. Gorgeous hike around the lake to the 1000ft+ waterfalls on the far side. On the way back my gf and I spotted a momma bear and her cubs (yearlings, still drinking milk and fuzzy) watched them for over 30 mins at only 20-40ft away. The bears, the lake, the mountains. It was farking magical!

I think that's what most Batman portrayals miss:  he's completely insane.  He's super smart, sure, but he's also a complete loon who pretty much lives in his own world, fueled by his money.

There's a gazillion compounds in soot and ash that are soluble in water and carcinogen as well.
