Thing is... I like Christians. Just like I like good Muslims and good Jews and good Hindus and good Sikhs and good... well I just like good PEOPLE. That's what it comes down to. If you use your faith to contribute to the community, help the less fortunate, enrich your life or do any of the other wonderful things faith can provide then if I had a million thumbs they would all be way up in the air.

What I DO not like... what I LOATHE are those who use it as an excuse to control others, to deny basic human rights, to act smug and superior to everyone else, to start wars at the expense of humanity, to do all those nasty ass things that many of the primary tenets of their OWN FAITHS discourage. Be like Christ and we'll have no problems. THAT is supposed to be the freaking POINT of being a good Christian. People who stray from this path have no business even calling themselves Christians. Those who manipulate those who wish to follow that path into STRAYING from that path are evil. I'm wondering what would happen if a Muslim, in all honesty, called in an Orthodox Christian parade to whatever thug thought police they have in Russia and claimed to be deeply offended because Jesus Christ is being portrayed as divine, which is blasphemous, rather than just one in a line of prophets. What would they do at this point?

Sometimes I think that the authors of the US constitution were so far ahead of their time that enough the world hasn't even caught up with it to a sufficient degree to put a century or decade value on it. And this story is an excellent idea of why. Once you get the government to enforce your religion, you're basically calling other religions, or none, wrong.

The US constitution was the first national law, ever, to exclude religion from state support. All other nations' that do or assert freedom of (and from) religion are based on it. It's disquieting to think that that fragile piece of parchment over two centuries old is the only thing standing between the forces of fascism. Please guard it well, not just for the US, but for the world. We need good examples.

I find it rather telling that the people bemoaning my comment are implying it is hyperbolic and overly aggressive while remaining silent about the fact some dorks wearing spaghetti strainers on their heads have been physically attacked and are facing serious time in Russian prison AND that this is likely the direct result of fundamentalist "Christians" manipulating one of the most powerful governments in the world.

Funny that. I wonder how they would feel if it happened here.

BraveNewCheneyWorld: Because "pastafarian" is a real religion.. sorry, it's the atheist equivalent of dressing up in blackface.

While I see where you are coming from I have to disagree.

Blackface was a cruel parody for the sake of "comedy". It was done by the majority mocking a minority without any redeeming goals.

The original pastafarian movement was a response to attempts to unconstitutional laws being implemented in regards to putting religion into schools. Logic and reason had no impact on these people so pastafarianism was created to both as a parody and as a way of making a point in a language that the religious theoretically could understand. The point being "if you are going to force the teaching of your religion in schools then you have to teach ours too." - 'ours' being a parody but with just as much supporting evidence.

I believe that a secondary movement has adhered itself to the pastafarian name as well. The non-religious who still want to belong to social groups but without the fairy-tales. This is popping up in many forms and I think this is what some people who associate themselves with pastafarianism are looking for.

Personally I do not need any of these atheist church-like groups but I will not fault people who do want them. As for the original pastafarianism, I respect the roots of the term and I find humor in how well developed the mythos has become.

tinfoil-hat maggie: This is definitely an interesting development. Russia historically saw itself as the last bastion of the Eastern Holy Roman Empire after the fall of Constantinople. Hence the double headed eagle. It seems this is a play for stronger nationalism through revival of an historic identity. Well nationalism and authoritarianism go hand in hand.

Interestingly the western Catholic Church became independent of the "state" somewhere around 1000AD. The Eastern Church never achieved this - its leaders were appointed by the state and were beholden to support the state or else.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but that's what I'm reading.

Oh they are man made works of fiction, but people really believe that shiat. They base their life around it.

As a person who was raised Catholic, I can tell you how stupid you look to other people when you do that, and you just make us look bad and immature.

So, the atheists who mock the religious are "immature" and hurting the cause, while the ones who just know their place and shut up are all right in your book?

You need to stop. Your pretension and tone trolling make the rest of us athiests look disconnected and unappreciative of the magnitude of the problem.

Russia has always been an authoritarian oligarchy. They had a brief period of chaos as the old oligarchs couldn't keep it together and new ones rose.

Satire in an authoritarian state can be seen as mocking the state, thus the crackdown.

I agree, when satire against institutions of power is no longer tolerated, it's a clear sign that you've crossed a threshold into authoritarianism.

In Russia's case, I think we are seeing the almost undeniable certainty that it's moving rapidly towards fascism.

Putin's power derives in part from a cult of personality (an image that is reinforced through relentless propaganda)

The targeting of undesirable social groups for persecution (both state persecution and also violence at the hand of the mobs).

A state religion (also protected from any critique by the state itself)

The imprisonment or murder of political opponents

Suppression/Intimidation of journalists

Rampant anti-immigrant sentiment among the population (and tacitly supported by the state)

It's Facism.   Facism is more scary than your simple old dictatorship in that it's roots go much deeper because it's violent and oppressive ideology is supported by a significant portion of the population.

They would rejoice. They've been quietly pushing towards a theocracy in the US for decades. It really started in the McCarthy era when they added "Under God" to the American Oath of Allegiance. When they equated the a person's position on religion the same as their position on politics (i.e. atheists are commies, etc.).

They already trample the American Constitution in their rush to legislate religious laws. Can you imagine how happy they would be if they could jail anyone who waved that annoying piece of paper in their faces??

Exactly. Fundamentalist Christians are the greatest threat to America (and many other western countries) than anything else. The highest laws of the land (the constitution) are continuously under attack by them at the expense of anyone else... even other Christians who just happen to be a little more moderate (AKA not completely batshizzers). Oh but lets pass expensive and redundant laws against Sharia and stomp those filthy homos into the ground because THEY are un-american. Let's crush the hopes and dreams of new americans and the poor because giving them the chance to succeed is un-american. Let's buy up large swaths of the fifth estate to counter factual reasoned and unbiased reports of domestic and international events because facts are UN-AMERICAN!

Yes. They surely have Americas best interests at heart and boy howdy if you even THINK about THINKING about anything counter to their lockstep, hive mind ideas of what America is and should be then YOU are un-american!!

But truly... they are becoming the oppressed class. Why oh WHY can you not see the injustices being committed against them? THEY are the REAL victims in all of this.

Have you no mercy or compassion? Can you not see what your barbarity and ruthlessness towards these innocent children of God means for the collective souls of mankind?

REPENT, SINNERS!! BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!

machoprogrammer: As an atheist, the "LOL FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER" atheists piss me off, too.

Seriously, "Pastafarianism" wasn't funny the first time and it isn't funny when you make fake churches and bibles off it, too. You're just making us look bad and giving the religious wackos more ammo. So stop.

And no, I didn't read the article.

Oh and I am not saying I agree with what Russia is doing -- in fact, I feel the opposite.

But it isn't funny now and wasn't funny when it was the invisible pink unicorn or the microscopic tea cup.

FTFA: They accused the spaghetti worshipers of insulting the religious feelings of believers - an accusation that, if found to be true by a court of law, can have mean up to three years in jail.

First of all, what is it to "insult religious feelings"? I assume they mean insulting their idiotic beliefs, which in turn makes them feel bad. With laws like that, it's surprising that the USA still leads them in incarceration.

You can do it Russia, keep it up. Your laws only need to be a little more ridiculous to catch up.
