Funny thing.  First Baptist Church of My Hometown has a giant bell that rings every hour, and a loudspeaker that chimes every 15 minutes.  Despite the fact that you can hear them both a quarter mile away, no one seems to have ever bothered to so much as ask them to turn it down, much less revoke their zoning.

They're not anti-Muslim, they just hate music... Which isn't played in Mosques because many Muslims feel it's a distraction from worshipping G-d and some Muslims cut music out of their life completely due to that distinction. Ok, nevermind, the guy is anti-Muslim as he attributes false ideas to his legal standing as a politican

Odd. I've been in an awful lot of mosques both in the US and outside of it. Never once have I heard "wailing music" issuing from it? Maybe he means the adhan? Of course, I'd be very surprised if he even knew what that was.

Admittedly no.  But these morons don't get anything right, so I tree to at least be generous in cases like this.  If they're not actively doing the absolute worst possible thing they could do, they deserve credit for it.  Because that's how low my perception of them is.

This. Also, FTFA:

Reached by telephone, Goodgame didn't want to publicly comment further, saying that it wouldn't be "healthy" to discuss it.

Translation: "I'm really against it because they're mooslims, but my words have been carefully crafted by people smarter than me to sound better than that, and if I don't follow the script, I may reveal my true feelings."

Seriously. One near me doesn't even have a bell, they just play bells over a loudspeaker. I won't say you can hear it across town but it's crackly and loud for several blocks at least.

This is what religious oppression looks like. It isn't simply not getting your way all the time as many southern baptist politicians seem to think, it is when someone is denying you your right to equality because of your religion.

Well, as a Swede (atheist) living in Sweden I kind of share his concerns. When the first mosques started showing up over here the muslims promised that there would be no yelling on Fridays before prayer.

Now it looks like they might get the right to do so.

I can accept that old churches where I live get to ring their bells like they've done for 500 years or so - but new churches not so much.

I mean seriously - what the fark? We live in an age where everyone got a watch or a cellphone. So there is no reason what so ever to disturb me if you want to get your gang together and pray to god, sacrifice a goat or whatever. Just send out a tweet or a SMS. Or just ask people to set their watches for next week.

Apart from the fact that time has no objective relevance here, I'm sure the laws in Sweden are quite difference from the laws in the U.S.A. In the U.S. religious places of worship have a legal privilege not accorded to other types of spaces, especially under the  Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA)

The problem being, at what point is grandfathering a house of worship being loud acceptable? 500 years is OK.  What about 100?  50?

At some point in the past, the local government enacted a law governing noise ordinances.  Any churches older than that law can be grandfathered in.  Newer churches cannot.

Pfffft, only Christianity is covered in the Constitution. Just like Jesus wrote...

The church I went to in the late 70s/early 80s put in a virtual bell system, and they got really carried away with it until the neighbors complained and they turned it down and used it a lot less.  I think the church next to my office rings the bell at noon.

I certainly wouldn't want to hear the call to prayer 5 times a day.

Had to do a wiki search for "grandfathering". :)

There are not that many new churches being built in Sweden. I live in a town called Gävle and here three churches have closed down in the last five years. Pingstkyrkan (I think the correct translation is, Pentecostal Church) have built a new church and it's without church bells.

So I'm guessing that the problem is taking care of itself when it comes to churches.

My point is that Freedom of religion is also freedom from religion. And when I'm woken up hungover as hell every Sunday at ten - I'm being forced to take part of a religious ceremony when I just want to hug my pillow and get some sleep.

I don't know, seems like the councilman dislikes Muslims to say the least, since he can't accurately describe the sounds that emanate from a mosque. If he kept to enforcing noise ordinances instead of completely banning the mosque, then he could convince me of his good intentions.

I don't hate The Beiber's music but it's certainly a racket. Hell I might even complain about it if it emminated from a church. Does that mean I am a racist?

The media uses the Adhan the same way they used to use the "Oriental riff" for far east nations like China and Japan. As a Muslim, I find it somewhat amusing that the Adhan is always sounded, but nobody goes into Masjid for prayer.

If your religion is affected by the mere presence of another religion, then perhaps you don't have a lot of actual faith in your own religion.
