Soon, where Toon Town once stood will be a string of gas stations, inexpensive motels, restaurants that serve rapidly prepared food. Tire salons, automobile dealerships and wonderful, wonderful billboards reaching as far as the eye can see. My God, it'll be beautiful.

Disney is rapidly becoming more evil than WalMart

Reminds me of GeoCities closing. When Yahoo! admitted that it was still profitable yet still wanted a shutdown, most of us went to Google. All that classic Internet just gone in an instant.

Seems they are pushing that Infinity thing. Yeah, video games with dolls.

Yeah, it's pretty much the one thing coming remotely close to attracting new video game players into the console video game space, so I'm okay with it.

I notice that the actual core Disney group- the Mickey/Minnie/Donald/Goofy/etc. group- isn't part of the launch set.

Mickey must have taken a beating in perception after Epic Mickey 2 flopped. Like, 'if you don't do something quick he's going to slip into Felix The Cat/Popeye/Bosco outdated-and-hokey territory' beating.

Oh please.  They aren't obligated to keep selling you something.
Next you'll be saying Fox is evil because they cancelled Firefly.

This crying and gnashing of teeth by Toontown fans is just a teaser for what it will be like whenever Blizzard finally shuts the WOW servers down.  The press will think the internet is coming to an end.

That's exactly why they're evil.

I'll restart my account, just to watch the show.

If they ever do.

IMHO it has reached critical mass, just like Everquest, and will just continue forever with some server consolidation.

Maybe at some point Blizzard will stop creating content (unlike Verant that still produces expansions for the 6 year older game Everquest), but if there's 1mill people paying 15USD a month, or even 100k, then they'll keep servers running.

The closing event should involve a steamroller flattening the place.

Toontown was awful when it was new.

Do something else with it.

Just don't dedicate any more space to Cars or any new properties. Put a legit rollercoaster in there.

and for gods sake, BRING BACK THE PEOPLEMOVER.

Nah, Fox was evil long before they canceled Firefly.  Even though that was an evil thing to do.  Chaotic evil.  Baby raping evil.

As a fan of MMOs in general, and lots of Disney properties... I have never ever heard of this before.

It seems like it would have been a natural 'try it at least once' but the closest to Toontown I'm ever getting these days is trying to decide whether to get Roger Rabbit on bluray or not. I keep hesitating since there is a lot of complaining about the quality and absolutely no extras, even the ones that were on the old dvd version.

Ahhh, Toontown. I remember when it all began ...

* flashback waviness *

I bought it for my then 9 year old, and then got my own account to play with her.  We took over block after block of Neighborhoods, freeing the toons from the cogs.  We rode the trolley, fished, rode the merry go round back in version 1.0, then planted tres and even bought those stupid, worthless pets.  We had a Home filled with lots of crap that you can buy in game.  The best part of the game was the teamwork involved.  If you had a competent partner that knows how to complement your attack/heal, the game is a cake walk.

Somewhere along the line we were introduced to the Toon Matrix, and the entire point of Toontown changed forever.  Toontown had a speedchat option and a 'secret friend' option.  Speedchat is the only way to talk to other toons, and is a way to limit griefing little kids.  Secret Friends allows regular chat that others can't read, but you have to tell someone what the secret code is.

One day I met a toon that invited me to his house, kept saying 'Let's be friends!' over and over, then made letters on the wall using pictures.  My mind was blown!  We exchanged codes and then I started down this wonderful world of abusing Toontown's glitches.

Toontown was very glitchy, but in a predictable way.  A simple glitch was placing the chest in your house against the wall, and facing the wall.  When you use the chest, it will put you in a grey unrendered world outside your house.  Another example, in Donald's Dock go to the fishing pond and if you trigger the fishing animination and jump/fall into the pond at the same time, you can walk around and fish at the time.  Some learned how to jump into the sky, others learned how to get their household items outside and threw big 'parties' that usually ended with a crashed/glitched out toontown server or two.  That last glitch involved changing your 'district/server' while someone else teleports to you while you are in your house, and back and forth until some state is reached where all the rules are broken.  Dogs married cats, hundreds of clone/copycat toons ... It was a glorious time!

* end flashback *

Lastly, Toontown is written in python, and (was when I lasted checked) based on the open source Panda3d engine.  The installer puts eggs/zip files that contain the entire game, and you can download Panda3d to check them out.

You can also inject python commands to the client to override server settings and do pretty much anything, flying all over the place, turning off collision detection, getting all 7 gags/tracks, unlimited jellybeans, even controlling other toons or cogs...  If you google 'toontown python injector', there are toontown python commands all over the internet.  Basically, the whole thing is one open matrix-like sandbox.

I think I'll give the old characters a good run before the end. And water those damn trees.

RIP Rainbow Randy and Lily Lavender
