No, it was worse than Manos. Manos was slow and meandering but it had a sort of atmosphere and with better production values could have been a decent film. Obviously I'm grading on a curve here. Hobgoblins was just horrible.

The movie's attempt at clever dialogue: "What do you call that?" "Urban renewal" was brought down by Crow's snarky "And what brisk witticism will this chappy have to offer?" This movie was painful, but the riffing was strong.

And Hamlet is the most puerile episode, full of fart jokes.

MST3K riffed plenty of bad movies. Some of them, like  Time Chasers are lovably bad- it's obvious that everyone involved really enjoyed making the film (the behind the scenes of TC is great). Many of them suffer from some kind of incompetence. Many are just poorly conceived, or attempted to do things that their skills and budget simply couldn't allow. Some of them were cynical cash-in flicks. A lot of them are just plain boring.

Hobgoblins is notable because everything about it, from the opening frame to the last, is filled with hate. It is a spiteful turd of a movie. It hates its audience. It hates its characters. It hates its core concept. It hates everything in the universe, and it wants to make sure you hate them too. I hate it, so much, that I cannot express my level of revulsion in mere words. I wish I could type the sound of Rick Sloane being thrown down a flight of stairs into a bloody basement filled with a pack of pirayenas (piranha/hyena hybrids), because that's the only sound that can describe how much I hate this movie.

Sooooo many good lines in this one. From off the top of my head:

"He put on his evening eyebrows."

"Peewee Herman casual wear."

"What'd they do, split a keg of Robotussin? Get UP!"

"Luckily all I wanted was a good thermos."

"Now I'm gonna remove your thatch."

"So I married one to check it out."

"That bank door kilt a man."

"He's got Pringles in his shoes."

"Smells like Jack Ruby."

"I was Tokyo Rose."

I can keep going all thread. God what a great episode.

Insufferable to the point of madness -- yet, as a prune-colored muscle car enthusiast, strangely compelling.

Since no one else is gonna do it, thank you, kind sir, for the service. The incoherence of those pre-Cobain lyrical stylings warms even the deepest of my cockles.

"Chordchordchordchordchordchord otherchord"
"Filipino push fighting!"
"Did you know Nick went on to... play Pong in his underwear while drinking beer?"
"AAAAAAAAGH! AAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHH!" "My fajita plate was really hot and I touched it!!"
"The Army was looking for sharp people, and Nick qualified!"
"Meet the Hobgoblins: Frankie, Sniffles, Bounce-Bounce and The Claw ."
"Someone's rubbing puppets on us!"
"Mike, if I run out of vomit, can I borrow some of yours?"
"Can we make it a point that in the future films need to be made by film makers?"

Boy that sure is a bad movie, won't you?
